Did any of the writers for this one even work on PS4 Spidey?

Either way, Miles clearly didn't fit in the story they had, the writers' politics seeped into their work a bit too much (little/no police presence, the radio voices weren't their own characters anymore but omniscient mouthpieces), and they did both Peter and a lot of his rogues' gallery dirty for the sake of plot

ignoring the politics and Miles crying but keeping the thing about the villians
      >the real answer
      >stripping some of the fun gadgets from the first game and not changing the formula enough.
      >game felt like a glorified expansion then a sequel.
      >Insomanics refusal to add more optional villans. I don't even mind the citizen missions, but would it really kill you to take a note from rocksteady pre-sucide squad and add a bunch more villians to fight as side quests.

I'm pretty certain that the writers for the first game are not the same as those who worked on both Miles Morales and 2, which were pretty much the exact same team.
I also heard the team for the first game's DLC might've been different from the first, but that I'm not certain of.

      >Miles is in an unwinnable fight, fighting against someone with his same powers but a lot more experience
      >gets clobbered, but manages to slap him with a lucky venom strike
      >the jolt hurts venom a little, but also distracts him long enough for Peter to start getting an edge
      >Cuts back to the inner battle which is a real battle this time
      >at a certain point when Peter hits Venom, the game slow-mos on that hit for a second while doing a smash cut to Miles doing that same hit on Venom in reality, and the battle picks up with you playing as Miles
      >the perspectives flip a few times during the fight, the battle only ends in Peter's perspective
      >at the end, it cuts to both Miles and Peter clocking Venom at the same time, causing the symbiote to get ejected

I'm glad this guy touched on just how shit Kraven was in this game

With just a bit of reworking, Kraven could have been one of the best Spider-Man villain adaptations. He was played by a great character. He felt like a formidable force but the only bits of background we get are optional. As a result even the Kraven from the Amazing Spider-Man 2 game is better

        >optional

This one also hurts because if you go by certain spots while investigating him you can end up never realizing what went on which I do think is fricked up. On the other end of that, I ask a genuine question: Is it better to be able to explore for ourselves to find these tidbits or do we need to have the exposition shown right in front of us?

I'd argue that hiring SBI at all falls squarely on Sony, Insomniac, or both of them. Imagine being one of the most successful triple-A game studios in the world, working on one of the most popular IPs in human history and thinking
        >We need to cut some room in the budget so we can hire a bunch of talentless homosexuals who are too fricking worthless to write their own material, and get them in here to tell us what our game really needs is a deaf girl graffiti artists

And not only did they do that, but they accepted SBI's input and published the game with it. That's on Insomniac. SBI was going to be a huge gaggle of homosexuals no matter what. It takes another gaggle of homosexuals to hire them on purpose.

Electro, Vulture and Shocker are even done off-screen. We only get to see Scorpion, and he goes out like a chump.

Half the fun with Spidey is the rogues gallery. Shouldve expected this after they turned the Tinkerer into a black girl.

Hydroman, Speed Demon, Chance and others att also canonized as carnival rides. Feels like they just want this franchise over with so they can focus on butchering Wolverine

          >after they turned the Tinkerer into a black girl

Playing Devil's Advocate here, but I feel like they don't see this as a series that will go on for twenty years or so, which gives them the confidence to make and destroy the gallery as they see fit.

And as a result they felt like since this was their story to tell, they could make this narrative where they can definitively kill off villains and the like.

            Anonymous

They can kill anything and anyone they want. But I'll still critisize an adaptation when its making changes that are for the worse or dont add anything to the overall story.

Insomniac tried to adapt Spencers Hunted, but doing it off-screen and with zero stakes is worthless. Shocker and Negative arent even animal based(which is just annoying me, I understand that this Kraven hunts anything). Turning Kraven into a metahuman sort of kills his greatest hunter thing too, he overpowers every character except for Venom. The villains he kills doesnt make him anymore threatening since Spider-Man manhandeled most of them 1v2. It adds nothing to the story, it just takes away any future contribution the characters couldve had.

PS4 Shocker's design to me was something between old and new which I like a lot and you can see the artist worked so hard for making him an enjoyable villain. Killing him in the 2hd one, hurts me so hard.

How so? I thought his outfit looked quite good and fit his arcane themed design that is just special effect and illusion? plus didn't mind the ghostly skull as it reminded me of Space Kook which thought also fit well as Mysterio would be right at home in Scooby Doo

Kinds of true but I believe they've could do better to his design. For example, Giving Mysterio new face in each phase, like pic related.

See I agree on the idea of the face shifting and think the more subtle implication of facial features in A and C work better for Mysterio. I just think the overall outfit design works in the visual details as it doesn't abandon the most important parts of his design like the eyes, the purple flowing robes/cape/coat and the glorious crystal ball head. Mysterio is a lot like Shocker in that for the most part they have had no bad redesigns in adaptions or games, though Shocker has had 3 bad ones so Mysterio wins out in that regard

The skull is a big part. It's really tryhard and doesn't feel like mysterio. If it looked more like a vague face surrounded by fog it'd look a million times better
The cardigan instead of a cloak or cape is also pretty disappointing. Feels more stage magician than sorcerer
The long nails look awful. There's no way to justify them, they just look terrible and gay
This is the most minor thing but I hate that he just has normal pants and shoes. It's very boring

The only thing I really like is that they kept the fishbowl but the aforementioned skull just ruins it for me. I just really hate how pronounced it is most of the time

that's fair enough, would you say the Shattered Dimension design looks better for you? though even that has the skull in his final boss so maybe not. It can feel like they tried to balance realism with the inherently exaggerated presentation of Mysterio's design which causes the elements to conflict, I do think the model has the skull too emphasized admittedly also. How do you feel about the other designs for the villains in the games?

Eh I'm not huge on that one either.
As for the Insomniac designs I have to say I'm not a fan of them for the most part. They're all so busy and filled with visual noise. Shocker doesn't look too bad, Otto looks alright too, as does Kraven.
I just hate the realistic "artstyle" they decided to go with. It's so soulless and boring, and they made it extend to a bunch of the optional suits too

again fair, what would be your fave Mysterio design not from the comics then as a fellow appreciator of ol Quentin Beck? Also I'm honestly surprised they didn't just throw Rhino into a robot suit and actually had him as an inhumanely increased mass of muscle in a suit. I do agree that a more comic book or stylized art style would've been an improvement, especially for the faces when only a few of them don't look repulsive or Uncanny. The main reason I find Silver Sable and first game Yuri utter babes is cause their faces are actually nice, shame Yuri got that abominable haircut next game.

Also the mocap suit as an alternate thing is both brilliant in how it plays into his film making theme/history despite that element being excluded from the MCU but also actually looks cool surprisingly. Shame they included the bit of him saying get that ridiculous thing off since Mysterio is someone who should love his getup completely and utterly with every fiber of his soul, though that aside yeah it is a great design and cleverly mishmashes elements of other Hero's in the universe while all coherently forming into Mysterio's comic elements to

                Anonymous

I'd have to agree with the other anon, the MCU design is a pretty good adaptation of the design as far as live action goes. Spectacular and TAS also have good designs, although they stick pretty close to the original which is probably why I like them so much
As for Rhino while I'm happy they didn't go full USM or god forbid TASM2, I don't like the glowing eyes or the amount of exposed skin. It's nice that he's actually a big guy under there but armour like that shouldn't be that exposed. That and I was always under the expression that the whole reason he's rhino themed in the first place was because his armour mimicked a rhino's hide, so making it a more plate armour design is just weird to me.
Again though all of my complaints really do just boil down to the art style. I'd have loved a game that actually tried to look like the comics. USM is probably the closest we'll ever get

                Anonymous

peak Rhino to me is how he looks in The Gauntlet where he doesn't look like just a guy in a costume or tacticool, he just looks like an inhumane force and like his hide looks both like the animal he is themed around yet also like nothing can pierce it and it truly is utterly a fused part of him both literally and metaphorically. Also yeah would agree on the design front with Mysterio, funny enough my fave design for him adaption wise is probably his MAU3 look. Speaking of yeah I think Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is what most Marvel game should stylistically look like, the designs are really good there, girls look 10/10 and will age much better visually then spider-man 1 and 2.

The fate of Insomniac Spidey will remain a Mass Effect 3-tier 'I will still be mad' situation.
The first game could have been easily the best adaptation we got in years but Miles fricking sticks out like such a blatantly corporate mandated sore thumb he ALMOST drags the whole experience. It is simply impossible to make that character seem organic, even if you try to pull some kind of Kamen Rider 1 & 2 type bullshit where we're supposed to accept them as one unit. But it pulls enough of a win with Peter's story in the end I can overlook it.
Spider-Man 2 is pure fricking capeslop, part of a two-pronged assault against ol webhead along with Enter the Slopverse. The beating black heart that epitomizes everything that has gone wrong with not just video games but the superhero genre, and especially Spider-Man. It's easy to blame Snoy, but I feel it would've turned out like that with or without him simply because this is where we're at right now.

All your games have bombed horribly Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad are awful and sold like shit and all you have to look forward to is a Wonder Woman game that will most likely be shit or at best it will be 1/3 as good as the first ever God of War. Meanwhile we have the Wolverine game, a Blade game from the writers that did Uncharted, Marvel 1943 and Marvel Rivals. Oh and there's a Irin Man game coming too. You obviously got destroyed in terms of movies and no matter how hard new Marvel movies bomb they still do 700 million which is a pipe dream for a DC movie, and in comics they're barely publishing 4 titles per week and nothing's good. I'm not trying to be arrogant, I'm actually sad for you, I'd rather there be competition.

Lack of focus. Too much happening and they don’t focus on any of it, Venom is barely in the game, all the villians die offscreen, themes about living up to expectations weren’t give any time to breath. They sold this game as a story about the Spider-Men but in reality it’s a Peter Parker story guest starring Miles Morales. The Side quests were also somewhat underwhelming.

Miles eclipses Peter in terms on competency in the game. Peter is an immature buffoon in the game, and Miles is consistently shown to be better than him, even though Miles has very little to do with the actual story going on.
It feels like he was only put in the game so they'd have a way to retire Peter

Miles is barely in it. I legitimately don't remember what his story in the game even is before he helps with the Venom shit at the end. He has the Mysterio side quests, which are pretty fun and interesting, but that's not his actual story for the game. Unironically the game would be better if he had more story moments just so it'd feel less short. Cut out the MJ shit and give the time to him.

It’s both at the same time
Miles is kinda just there but gets shoehorned in to the Venom plot last minute to be the one who beats the shit out of Peter and gets the symbiote off him as well as being the one you play as in the last phase of the Venom fight
More importantly, the ending is basically soft-retiring Peter to get fans used to the idea before they permanently kill him off in 3
On top of this, he’s shown to be way more competent at being Spider-Man like

The writing and story telling is leagues below the first. Consider the idea of Spider-Man making a new suit.
In the first game Peter takes time that could have been spent saving lives to make a new suit in order to battle Doc Ock. This is because Doc Ock is a calibre of villain far more dangerous than any he's faced before. It's worth the time and effort overhauling his suit to take him down.
The writers of Spider-Man 2 knew about this moment and wanted to repeat it for Miles because he's supposed to be Spider-Man too, so he needs a big moment where he overhauls his suit. But rather than give him a good reason for it (such as better allowing him to deal with an ongoing alien invasion that's engulfing all of New York and threatens the world), they had to continue to try and make him seem "cool" so his stated reason is he wanted do his own thing or some shit. This not only makes him look like a moron, but an butthole as well as people are dying and he's concerned about looking more distinct than the actual Spider-Man.
It doesn't help that his new suit looks like absolute shit.

I remember finishing that and thinking back on how dumb, predictable, yet frustrating the story and character choices all were, especially in the second half, as the credits rolled. At the time, I just chalked it up to the assumption that they must've given this DLC expansion tier 'game' over to their B-team writers, because their A-team was presumably hard at work on the real Spider-Man 2.

Just finished Miles up (I know I'm late, picked it up on sale) and I was so irritated by Phin the entire game. She is not a fun, redeemable, friendly interest. No shit she became a villain. She is a Mary Sue in every way, completely undercutting of everyone around her (Because she is the smarterest and bestest girl evar), and constantly does the scienc-y things that Miles (you know..the main character) should be doing.
I thought the first half of the story was fine-ish. Just a teen drama, like what a Miles story in video game form should be, but it just is so bad after a certain point.

I haven't played this game, can someone tell me why Miles calls himself Spider-Man when Peter is right there and still active? As far as I know there was no passing of the mantle or anything like that, there's just two of them now.

Obviously I know what the actual IRL reason is, I'm asking what's the in-game justification for it.

      Anonymous

There isn't an in-game justification ever given from what I remember. You're simply expected to ignore every obvious problem with it.
It's funny to see in leaked internal documents that Insomniac differentiates by calling him "Spider-Miles".

      Anonymous

It doesn't really come up if you're looking for an in-game reason. The media calls them the Spider-Men and no one questions it. Even in this storyline where Peter was the first to know of Miles powers, he never designates him a name besides "Spider-Man". In Miles own game he tosses the responsibility of taking care of NYC(read: Harlem) on him while he runs off with MJ to Symkaria. No one really questions it besides the people in the neighborhood who end up realizing that this new Spider-Man is a POC and is therefore "for them".

        >this new Spider-Man is a POC and is therefore "for them".
That's the part I hated most of Miles' story. I wonder if the writers even realize that they were implying that Peter wouldn't save minorities.

          >the mask means anyone can be Spider-Man, that’s why were specifically making our segregated spider-man who is the only one allowed to save black people because spider-man wouldn’t do that cause he’s not black under the anyone can be spiderman mask

          Anonymous

And see, I didn't like that shit either. It was the writing just virtue signaling by having minorities acknowledge that they could have something to "claim". Even as a biracial dude myself I have never felt like there was a need to specify Peter as needing to protect a certain part of the neighborhood. And Miles' game only justified that line of thinking then because the game only had you swinging about in that area. It's a very different story come SM2 where he's everywhere.

Sorry for the tangent. I know Miles is for someone out there, but Peter's always been my Spider-Man, personally speaking.

A disproportionate amount of the game is devoted to Miles, a superfluous character that you could totally delete from the game and not lose a single step. They try to differentiate him from Peter by leaning hard on the electric powers but there is fricking nothing that says spider about electric powers. When you play as Peter the game is tops, not as good as the first but only a minor downgrade. When you’re forced into playing as Miles the game grinds to a halt. And not just because you have to play as Miles but the shit you have to do as him fricking sucks too. Then you add in the fact they heard the criticism of the MJ levels in the first game and instead of taking the criticism of “we don’t want to fricking play as MJ” they keep making you play as MJ but give her some offensive capabilities (including a symbiote one-shot gun that makes her too OP and makes you wonder why Peter didn’t just fricking use it when he was fighting them)

From a gameplay standpoint, doubling down on MJ and Miles missions.

Another is taking one of the more personal Peter stories, Venom, and wedge Miles in there to defeat the purpose of Peter breaking free of Venom and then just have it keep punching down on Peter after the fact.

I didn't dislike the game but it definitely wasn't as good as the first one. The story wasn't as good. It wasn't that woke but it definitely had some eye rolling moments.

I find it odd how disliking Peter’s redesigned face was acceptable for a while in the fanbase but disliking MJ’s gets you labeled as some type of buzzword even if you don’t imply the reasoning for it was because of PC culture

I'd like to add that the game doesn't have any comic book aesthetics. You play Arkham games and they feel very comic booky even if they get more realistic afterwards. But Insomniac Spidey? It feels very generic "Sony we desperately want to make moovies" kind of blandmess and thus aesthetic wise the game feels very bland. A generic Sony AAA product.

I hate that this "artistic choice" has extended into the alternate costumes. Almost every single one needs pointless details to make them feel more realistic. I don't give a frick that toed shoes would make it easier to climb walls, they look like shit on the design

Ehh, Arkham Asylum and City sure, but Knight looked too realistic for my liking, and my own nitpicks, but I dislike the non-white eyes and feel it robs Batman of a lot of his intensity and character, plus his forearms were too wide.

I also wish they played with the lighting more. Batman dripped in darkness with nothing but his silhouette and eyes peering through is so cool, and it's something earlier games, while not as good game play wise, got.

My ideal Batman game would've been the look and feel of Dark Tomorrow with the gameplay of the Arkham games.

        Anonymous

Yeah Knight takes a more realistic route, but compare Knight to these games, Knight still feels like a comic book. Bit can't say the same towards Suicide Squad or even Injustice 2 though.

Hell much as Ultimate Alliance 3 was divisive to me, I'm glad that Team Ninja make the artstyle appealing.

Origins already dabbled in realism and it looked really stupid in that game, I dunno why they kept it up for Knight because it feels even stupider there. I can hit a dude with the Batmobile at 50 miles per hour and he merely gets "stunned" by the taster thing on the bumper. I don't care what you say, Arkham Knight, I know what roadkill looks like.

Very frustrating in the game as well. Why is it Miles that has to make beats? Why is it Miles that has all this conception of 'being black' put onto him? I can understand the themes of being black HAVING to be part of the script for.. like.. Black Panther. But Miles is just a dorky kid from Harlem, let him be that. Not the hinge to black identity that the writers are trying to force.

I can understand the themes of being black HAVING to be part of the script for.. like.. Black Panther. But Miles is just a dorky kid from Harlem, let him be that. Not the hinge to black identity that the writers are trying to force.

Its not even the characters fault, its just the writers that try to push him into the black people appeal box.

    The Good:
-Boss fights. At least on hard, they stepped it up, and were really fun
-Harry as a character, really well done. Felt for him, as a pal.
-The Venomized city section and how much tougher the random mooks were, and how they could snipe you out of the air

    The Dissapointing:
    -Pretty much everything else
-The off screen deaths of most of the previous villains
-Miles' tangential Li plot being crammed in and taking away the momentum from the main arc
-The Venom arc being insanely rushed
-The Venomized city lasting no time at all, the city finally feels alive and mooks finally feel threatening and it's over in the blink of an eye
-The gadgets were way too OP and had next to no cooldown times
-The open world and side missions severely, fatally lacking.
-Felt like a DLC, or another short Miles type game. I bought out of FOMO right away, but will wait next time.

I really loved the first game’s interpretation of Peter, it was great to have something where’s he’s a well established veteran hero with good relationship with the law, who makes his own gadgets, and really captures the whole persists despite suffering Spider-Man is known for.
So of course the second game sets up his retirement and eventual replacement by Miles cause we can’t have anything nice.

The question is, will they actually commit and Peter is retired in the third game or are they going to bring him back quickly because Miles isn't going to sell.

They can't commit. For all their posturing, they know that Miles doesn't sell. They'll crawl back to Peter. They'll still shit on him any chance they get, but they'll crawl back to him all the same, gnashing their teeth.

You’d think they would realize Miles just isn’t popular, but I imagine the Spiderverse films have them convinced people MUST like him since they sell pretty good.

            Anonymous

They know he's not popular. They know he doesn't sell. It's not about the money. It's about pushing Miles to the forefront, not matter what, and they'll use other characters that people actually like to push him.
The very first Miles movie had to rely on multiverse bullshit and alt universe characters in a plot that could have just been a normal origin story. Hell, even just having alt universe Peter would have been enough. But they just HAD to make sure that people would see this slop, so they stuffed it with multiverse characters. More people wanted to see animated Spider Noir on the big screen than Miles. That's what they counted on.

              Anonymous

The best parts of ITSV were the ones that least felt like a multiverse movie. This, along with other reasons, is why ATSV is inferior, is too in-love with it's grandiose ideas and multi-part metanarrative instead of just telling a new, simple story.
And worse of all, it uses it's metanarrative angle in order to push how totally valid Miles (and other non-Peters) are as Spider-Man, turning fan-favorites into antagonists only to make a point to... who, exactly?

They could have chosen SpOck, someone who actually doesn't deserve to be called Spider-Man and would make sense for him to be an authoritarian dictator who misunderstands what being Spider-Man is all about, but they chose Miguel because he's the one non-Peter Spider-Man that fans actually like. I have absolutely no way to back up what I am about to say, and it may very well be that this is no longer the case; however, I basically worked as one of the consulting head above some of the lower writers and lesser esteemed consultants, so that they followed the expectations of the bigger consultants, the overall game’s direction, and even the whims of Sony and Marvel. If this sounds unrealistically redundant, that’s because it is. All I did was say whenever something was stupid and made no sense.

I’ve tried to outline the original plan for these games, but there’s just so much I keep remembering the more I try and organize which ideas came first and such. So, I’ll just tell you guys what I know in a big burst of dookie

Miles was originally going to be based. I will never not be mad at what these people did to him. They were going to be more important than MJ. Much more important. In fact, remember MJ as Scream? Was supposed to be Miles in the Black Suit. And it was so fricking cool and emotional. So real bro-shit. Some real TOKU shit. Also, the reason Peter acts so cringey in the black suit is we based that persona on how he’d be in the third game— as the Superior Spider-Man. Yeah, I know. Gets better tho. Another idea? The real Peter’s body? Missing. He’s actually a cloned Peter being controlled by Otto. He breaks free of control and takes the name Ben, and becomes the buddy of Miles when the real Peter dies. Both take the mantle of Spider-Man. No Scarlet Spider. Jackal also helps Otto because Clones ‘n shieeet. But yeah, this could all be totally fricking false now, cause I know they were talking about Jessica Drew being a clone of Parker like in Ultimate Spidey, so who fricking knows. Basically, all the ideas were used for dlc and the expansion. We’re fricked lol.

Also, the way Peter gets infected with Doc’s brain is through when he was stabbed by Otto in the first game. Spoilers unless it’s not anymore hahaha.

      >Also, the reason Peter acts so cringey in the black suit is we based that persona on how he’d be in the third game— as the Superior Spider-Man.
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

      >There’s none of the wit and humor Peter Paker’s Spider-Man is famous for or any of Miles Morales’ heart and energy
      >Miles Morales’ heart and energy

I believe in parts of it (Symbiote Miles was confirmed by Tony Todd), and that the third game will adapt Superior, too many hints involving Otto to it not being the case.
All the clone shit is fake and gay

        >too many hints involving Otto
I mean, not really? It'd be really stupid of them to actually do that, don't you think?

There is no way they include Jessica Drew without forcing Spider-Gwen first, let alone if there even is a third game at this rate.

I'd believe they'd include her before more of Slott's OCs.

          >Otto is suffering from a disease that will end up making his body useless
          >the neuro-implant could be altered to transfer personalities
          >Otto knows Pete is Spider-Man and what he's capable of
          >Otto is extremely vengeful against Peter, stealing his body would be one of the most evil ways to do it
          >the games have been clearly influenced by the modern stories, specially Slott's run
other than the Superior suit in the 2nd game (the developers confirmed they didn't included the black suit in the 1st game because they had bigger plans for it), there have been many hints that some sort of Superior storyline adaptation (or at least inspired by it) is happening.
Not saying it's guaranteed, but i wouldn't be surprised.

          HA! As the Anon from

Spoilers unless it’s not anymore hahaha.

, I’ll tell you for SURE it’s guaranteed. Like, without any shred of doubt. It was LITERALLY PHRASED that Dok-Ock was going to be what Scarecrow is to the Arkham series and what Joker was in Arkham Knight. And the way they told ME they were gonna go about it? Good LORD was it dumb. I couldn’t believe it.

They did a lot of stupid things, why should I expect them to stop now

Wouldn't some of this have been in the big Insomniac leak from last year? If we wanted proof

I wouldn’t know. A lot of the stuff I’ve heard about that leak was all beyond me. I didn’t know shit about a Venom game. I wasn’t there for too long in the grand scheme of things. I was there for developement of the first game and its “brand story” which was YEARS ago at this point. Like, before 2017? Maybe even 2016?

      >miles was originally based
I actually like parts of the first game where Pete and Miles had a sort of Batman and Robin relationship. Some things like making Miles practise swinging off a bridge. Teaching him how to throw a punch. Shame I'll never play the Miles game or Spider-Man 2.
