What went wrong?

>fun, sincere movie with no grimdark edge, subverisiness or woke shit
>heteronormative and full of heart and soul
>the cast is, bar two people, is all white
>great pace, no scene is wasted, fun for the whole family and friends
>a perfect date night movie too
>bombs to oblivion

Why don't you guys put your money where your mouth is and go watch good movies? this was the blockbuster you've been saying Hollywood should make and here it is and you didn't watch it. Now you'll be condemned to woke slop forever. Good fricking going.

The issue is the budget, 120 million makes no sense for that type of movie. Should've been like 50 mil max

Agree with you there but a movie like this shouldn't be doing THIS badly. I went to my showing and people loved it and it was full. Is it too late for word-of-mouth to save it?

I don't know broski I watched it yesterday and there was a few moments where alot of people laughed out loud. I really enjoyed it for what it was and I got what they were going for (90s early 2000s comedy action with a wink)

What a fricking shame. You just know the morons at Hollywood looking for any justification to keep shoveling out ESG slop will look at this and think capeshit and vidya slop is the way to go. It's so fricking over.

BUT i will hold it against the movie for not casting a young, actually attractive and not bogged and annoying and insufferable actress to play against Goose. Blunt ruined this moive.

You had Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Just get Jodie Comer (wise choice) and him and that's it. Two fresh stars who are new and not old and depressing to look at and the movie does way better. also drop the romcom angle and make it more of an action film without Reddit humour.

        Anonymous

Why save it? It looked like a stupid ass romantic comedy that wouldn't be out of place 20 years ago with a veneer of dumb action shit but if someone wanted that there are better options.

The whole point of the movie is to cram as many practical vehicle stunts into one movie as they can without making it Mad Max, and they succeeded. Have you seen the cast? They have like 2000 stunt people working on this thing. That's where the budget went, and it was well-spent.

the trailer makes it look like an action rom-com which is genre mashup that alienates people. people want an action movie or a romcom. not both.

This. Goose could've gone the action movie route and made a respectable career in that field for himself but no, the Reddit crowd who never leaves the house is the smarter target audience.

It's based on a show from four decades ago that at the time it was on tv mainly appealed to men in their 40s, meaning the audience for this were men in their 80s. That's not a great demographic to go after for an action based summer blockbuster.

      Anonymous

that doesn't matter and has nothing to do with why the movie flopped. it should have been a solo buddy cop movie with ATJ/goose who had great chemistry and cut out Blunt entirely and keep the budget low and that's it. It could've been a huge hit having a buddy cop action comedy with an egotistical actor and his humble stuntman but alas. they made it gay for women.

      Anonymous

The only thing the movie has in common with the TV show is the name and lead is playing a stunt guy. Everything else is changed. Once again it's Hollywood writers writing their own shit and just slapping the name of some old show on it to bait fans of the original show into seeing it.

Why does the film just forget that the bad guys are all looking for the guy from Black Panther and Us? They’re storming around the set asking about him, pulling off people’s costumes, he has to hide to be safe. Except all of a sudden he’s just walking about out in the open doing his job and not being bothered

Yeah I noticed that, I don't think the script is tight enough to save the film from being a confused mess. The trouble with Le Quirky dialogue and ironic snarky interactions is that it drains any stakes so that the action sequences feel like part of the joke, you don't feel the tension building in a natural way.

Gosling doesn't have leading man presence for blockbusters. Aaron Taylor Johnson was a far more exciting actor to watch despite being in it for 2 minutes and not doing anything hence why he's the frontrunner for Bond.

It was supposed to be a March release. You know, a dump month. Then some idiot got the bright idea that there is a may slot open, so they've re-scheduled. Except they didn't re-schedule marketing campaign and realised a week before premiere they don't have ads. But since it was intended to be a March release originally, it was just tossed into the cinemas.
As for the movie itself: it's the milquetoast action comedy, not too fast, not too funny, but also not bad and not boggled down with some shit.
So: a dump month project getting May release without May marketing.

That's not the problem. The leads aren't names to carry the movie and aren't young enough to be fresh. Like has been said, the same movie with two currently popular Zoomer leaning actors would've been a smash and gathered more interest.

We're in a miserable economic depression that nobody in power wants to acknowledge because it's a moronic election year. Everyone is broke and pessimistic right now. We're still collectively recovering from the mass public psy-op that was 2020. You might think a depressed populace would want "fun" escapist entertainment, but art is also supposed to reflect the world we're currently living in. This movie probably would've made a ton of money in 2019, but audiences (and the two lead actors faces) are in much different states of being in 2024.

Saw it in cinema, was just sorta boring. Blurb said a meta comedy which was the only thing I knew going in, then a scene literally began with "So what do you think about split screen phone calls? Too nostalgic?" before going to a split screen. The concept could have been pushed a bit more.
