Same. It was my favorite site from 2010-2012 but it fell off hard and fast. I even went to see their live event at SXSW when I was in high school & met Swaim and DOB in person.
I was Facebook friends with Seanbaby, Swaim, Gladstone and some of the others because they had links to their FB in their articles. It was a more innocent time 🙁
It's simple: they always had a liberal following, and liberals used to have a sense of humor; ESPECIALLY dark humor and "pushing the envelope. But that was back before the dark times when around 2015ish rolled around and suddenly all libs were offended by everything. They had to keep up with their key demos, but it's kind of hard to do that when literally anything and everything you say to a liberal now is offensive to them, now imagine trying to make them laugh...it was nigh impossible.
Also, their business model wasn't very profitable to begin with. They should've kept their key players and just put up a paywall/streaming service type deal back before the purge in 2017. It's too late now.

Because that always works.....

They had already been drifting in a more overtly political direction by that time, but if their angle had simply been "jezebel but with jokes", they still would have been relevant with someone, but the articles they released were just anemic and lazy. Also didn't help that many of their best writers were purged over extremely dubious metoo frickery. And most of the staff was already telecommuting by that point, so it wasn't even like "he groped me" shit, it was like "he made a dick joke in an email correspondence and he was supposed to be my boss. I felt so violated". You work for cracked. They were making jokes. It's what comedy writers do.

They had to keep up with their key demos, but it's kind of hard to do that when literally anything and everything you say to a liberal now is offensive to them, now imagine trying to make them laugh...it was nigh impossible.
Also, their business model wasn't very profitable to begin with. They should've kept their key players and just put up a paywall/streaming service type deal back before the purge in 2017. It's too late now.

You couldn't even comment about that columnist, Christine or something. She came out of nowhere, had never submitted any articles and was then a columnist who wrote about things in a completely different tone, format and manner than the rest of the content and suddenly the whole staff who'd previously been accepting of criticism were on the defensive. I remember a lot of their deflection was centred around the criticism being sexist but from my experience it was always about quality.
I'm not going to disagree with any of the general narrative in this thread about woke liberals ruining everything, but two things I think that go missing is that around the same time in roughly 2015 they seemed to run out of interesting facts to list in articles (they did quite a lot to be fair) and they were rumored to have been bought out by a new corporate owner who installed a new editor to keep the name and general formula but slash the budget, which lead to all the remaining talented writers to leave and be replaced in effect by a bunch of nobodies who would write and submit articles for free. Because that always works.....

The sold to a different company in like 2015, fired most of the staff and dramatically raised the content quota despite being understaffed. They had already been drifting in a more overtly political direction by that time, but if their angle had simply been "jezebel but with jokes", they still would have been relevant with someone, but the articles they released were just anemic and lazy. Also didn't help that many of their best writers were purged over extremely dubious metoo frickery. And most of the staff was already telecommuting by that point, so it wasn't even like "he groped me" shit, it was like "he made a dick joke in an email correspondence and he was supposed to be my boss. I felt so violated". You work for cracked. They were making jokes. It's what comedy writers do.
