- The original story seriously went to hell. The writing is genuinely so shit I can't stand it anymore and the story started going to hell since Kingdom Hearts 2. Kingdom Hearts 3 was a culmination of many bad ideas being put on the spotlight at the same time.
- Gameplay never remained consistently great.
- Ran out of good Disney media to turn into worlds. Modern Disney has been shit for quite a large number of years and people don't care about their new media being worlds in Kingdom Hearts. And no Star Wars and Marvel won't save anything.
- Kingdom Hearts is difficult to get into, Square Enix and Nomura are so "brilliant" that they scattered the series everywhere which for a continuous story that's a disaster. Scattering the series everywhere should have killed it, but through luck Kingdom Hearts fans are autistic and kept it alive, the series didn't sell as grand as console entries, but still somehow hanged in there with decent sales on portable platforms.
These things completely ruined and helped Kingdom Hearts fizzle out. And no there is no salvation. Sora in Smash Bros is probably the final hurrah of Kingdom Hearts. And frick all parties involved that ruined a decent series, Square Enix for dismantling Tokyo Team, Nomura for his shit ideas, and Disney for making shit and becoming a pile of unforgivable shit corporation (hope Disney implodes from within). Kingdom Hearts has no future.
And a bit of a nit pick, the Kingdom Hearts fanbase on youtube are fricking annoying with how much they suck Nomura, Disney, and Square Enix's wiener. I hate Kingdom Heart's youtube community.
The first one will always be the best because it had a (more o less) simple story, but Nomura got way up to his own ass with the plot as the series progressed,
>The original story seriously went to hell. The writing is genuinely so shit I can't stand it anymore and the story started going to hell since Kingdom Hearts 2. Kingdom Hearts 3 was a culmination of many bad ideas being put on the spotlight at the same time.
The things that made the story turn into shit are...
Clone characters.
Reviving dead characters and even going as far to explain that characters can also reincarnate as well. There's no tension to any conflict anymore.
Time Travel. This further removes tension from a conflict.
>Axel revives alongside the other former Nobodies >Ienzo acts like being ruthlessly murdered by Axel via Replica Riku is no big deal
At least Even ran the frick away the first opportunity he got.
>It was already starting to get convoluted by the end of the second main game. >Instead of really developing the characters they already have, they just keep adding more. >Disney worlds feel less and less like a fun interwoven part of the plot, and more like a contractual obligation that abridges their source material in an unsatisfying way. >Final Fantasy characters were once introduced as mainstays of the cast before nearly being dropped altogether. >Spin-offs hold too much relevance to the story, even when they're not available to play anymore >Manga Kairi is infinitely better than game Kairi >The series has taken too long to reach any form of real payoff, and the kid version of me that was once excited to see what happened next is now too old and sad to care
>The series has taken too long to reach any form of real payoff, and the kid version of me that was once excited to see what happened next is now too old and sad to care
Seems like a (you) problem
I kept waiting for Marluxia and Larxene to show up in KH2 because they were in the FMV intro. Took me ages to figure out that Chain of Memories mattered.
It was never the highest quality of any of it's parts, not the best Disney, not the best FF, not the best rpg, people just expect too much from something that was just meant to be lol random from the beginning, that said, the extra bosses are always on point and it's their most consistent hype factor
Learn to appreciate the good and lol at the bad, at least we don't have glitchy messes as a staple int his series
With how batshit the anime side of the story gets I can't imagine them interfering too much there. The only issue I recall is that the Frozen and Tangled worlds had to be as bland as possible for fear of mucking up the image of Disney's modern money-makers.
The big bad of a half dozen games barely gets any comeuppance because the director is so preoccupied with saying how he was just a midguided goodboi and who even cares that the protagonist gets a worse ending than the villain? Get excited because Nomura is remaking Vs XIII whether you want it or not! What do you mean you didn't play the mobile game? That's vital information now!
This. KH3 feels way more like a setup for more stuff than a conclusion to everything that happened so far. Why would I bother caring about anything when everything is just teases for more newshit and mysteryboxes(literally)
I only played for the Final Fantasy stuff, since I hate Disney, and the FF characters might as well have been OCs for as much as they were redesigned and changed.
Less boring than a person who plays Kingdom Hearts to see a poorly done CG version of a Disney movie scene but with Dora, Goofy, and Donald standing awkwardly in the background of it.
It depends on the game. KH1 I think is better about it than most of the others due to the villain council and Princesses of Heart being relevant, but I argue there's always at least 1 world in each game that's very directly attached to the plot (the Tron world in 2, Tron Legacy in DDD and Monsters Inc in 3 are the best examples in my opinion).
at the time, square didnt think gamers would ever play a game populated solely by disney characters, so they added final fantasy characters in an effort to appeal to people who thought they were too grown up for disney
basically this anon
I only played for the Final Fantasy stuff, since I hate Disney, and the FF characters might as well have been OCs for as much as they were redesigned and changed.
so FF characters got less and less prominent over time as disney got much more mainstream and KH got big enough that they could rely more on their OC characters and disney characters alone
the next problem is that everyone who grew up with the first two games now see it as the FF x disney slashfic they never knew they wanted, so are now upset that the series has grown past that
Funny enough, the FF characters are largely sequestered to a containment world (Radiant Garden/Traverse Town) and don't often get the opportunity to do much crossover except with each other. Off the top of my head the only exceptions I can think of is Olympus Colosseum (Cloud was hired by Hades in KH1, Auron was locked up in the underworld in KH2, and Zack Fair was considered a native in BBS) and that one time Maleficent hired the Gullwings from FFX-2.
Not directly KH, but had he lived to see video games in general, he probably would have come up with some interesting projects due to his interest in technology and innovative forms of entertainment.
By that point he would have been deposed and possibly murdered by the population of Tomorrowland for being a despostic ruler.
He mostly likely would try to push VR as soon as possible to created a fantasy world no one else wanted and then would die using it until his last breath
He would have eaten it up and made Kairi his waifu. He absolutely finish at least the story and gotten all the Dalmatians in the first game, and then move on to the next thing that caught his eye.
Retcons.
EVERY game has to introduce a new villain who's master plan involved the previous villain being taken down.
It's just a pile of retcons and "Everything that's happened before has been leading up to my master plan" only for it to be revealed that plan was part of someone else's even BIGGER plan. It never feels like the plot is moving forward and that reached a climax with the shitshow that was KH3.
>EVERY game has to introduce a new villain who's master plan involved the previous villain being taken down.
I was oky with that because the big reveal was that all those other guys were just incarnations of one guy.
Except then KH3 happens and you fight the one guy after a game full of literal filler and at the very least second force ghosts come out and tell him to just give up and he...does. And then he explains that all the heinous shit he and his incarnations have done over the course of decades and literal world destroying was ackshully for the greater good. And THEN he ascends into the stars with his best friend and you get a flashback to when he was a well meaning handsome bishonen baby. Just THE COOLEST GUY. And then you die. Because frick you for trying to save your friends, I guess.
Nomura only works well with Japanese women co-writers, Tokyo Team was shattered, and BBS got downgraded from a console game to a handheld one and thus became the origin point for lost of bullshit people hate tot his day.
>Kingdom Hearts is a step up from the usual Cinemaphile thread.
It really isn't, unless you're that invested in interactive Shounen trash feat. Disney and Final Fantasy characters.
>It'll take a thread like this over the usual trash this board has.
Then go to that equally fricking trash board Cinemaphile and discuss those stupid Hot Topic kids there.
That was a huge miss. What the frick were they thinking with battle gates and not having Colosseum at the top of Olympus. Fighting Safer Seph there would have been great
Disney is pretty hands-off with most of the games outside of KH3. The majority of the series' faults can be attributed to Square.
With that said, the series is still good. Every game is enjoyable (except Union Cross, but we don't talk about that), and they're all surprisingly well-built. The series' track record is pretty commendable, even if some games try too hard to be different and become acquired tastes.
The story is also nowhere near as confusing/convoluted as people make it out to be. You just need to follow the plot in the games' release order and everything is spelled out for you if you're not just blindly skipping cutscenes. You don't jump into the 5th book of an ongoing series and expect to understand everything. Again, that was a Square executive issue because they wanted a piece of the handheld money pie, while Nomura just wanted to tell his damn story.
The plot is simple, but the lore and worldbuilding tend to throw weird and poorly explained concepts at the players, like the new stuff with nature taboos sending people to unreality.
We know almost nothing about unreality right now or how it even works, and that's intentional because that's most likely what KH4 is going to explore. It's standard nonconsequential sequel bait. It's like complaining why we don't know everything about Yozora and his crew yet.
Too muchwait of a wait on 3, I do appreciate all the spin offs and whatnot but for fricks sake they should of really just got on with it already and just given us it earlier, I started the the series younger than Sora and then became double his age by the time 3 came out.
3 took too long to make, had it been a late PS2 or a PS3 game it might have not been shit.
Japanese devs tend to get these moronic ideas about "fixing" or "improving" their popular IPs and this is the result.
Nothing, it's super fun still. Don't let the KH2 schizos get to you.
For me it's...
- The original story seriously went to hell. The writing is genuinely so shit I can't stand it anymore and the story started going to hell since Kingdom Hearts 2. Kingdom Hearts 3 was a culmination of many bad ideas being put on the spotlight at the same time.

As someone who enjoys joking about the Disney corporation, I find the Disney haters here are excessively cringe

>Thats a lie, they never did Mickey and the Beanstalk
They did, in the laziest, cheapest, and most disappointing way ever.
That's the giant from The Brave Little Tailor
That's an entirely separate "Mickey fights a giant" short called Giantland. The giant's name is Rumplewatt in the Floyd Gottfredson adaptation.

That's why it's at the bottom of the list
>>It was already starting to get convoluted by the end of the second main game.
I was already confused by the beginning of the second game because it turned out that that crappy GBA game was the actual sequel to KH1.
I kept waiting for Marluxia and Larxene to show up in KH2 because they were in the FMV intro. Took me ages to figure out that Chain of Memories mattered.
It's bad when even the mobile game and Rhtyhm game are Canon
Granted the mobile game did downgrade to a "cutscenese only" version when it shut down, I hope this upcoming one Missing Link Does the same.

Disney execs forcing mandates, instead of just letting Nomura do the moronic shit he's always done.

The third game and all the side shit.
Who the frick wanted re:coded
I only played for the Final Fantasy stuff, since I hate Disney, and the FF characters might as well have been OCs for as much as they were redesigned and changed.
I can not imagine how boring of a person you have to be to play kingdom hearts solely for the final fantasy fanfiction.
Less boring than a person who plays Kingdom Hearts to see a poorly done CG version of a Disney movie scene but with Dora, Goofy, and Donald standing awkwardly in the background of it.
But I like the "poorly done CG" of these games better than the actual movie CG
The whole conceit was that it was a crossover. I wouldn't play fricking smash if it was mario characters only.
The whole conceit was disney, the FF characters were always just window dressing and fun little cameos.
But the Disney stuff is barely even related to the actual plot
It depends on the game. KH1 I think is better about it than most of the others due to the villain council and Princesses of Heart being relevant, but I argue there's always at least 1 world in each game that's very directly attached to the plot (the Tron world in 2, Tron Legacy in DDD and Monsters Inc in 3 are the best examples in my opinion).

As Disney “got much more mainstream”? They were mainstream since the 20s.

anti-mickey when?
Whenever this comes out from Monolith Studio 5.
Bugs Bunny is as Ant-Mickey as you can get.
Once we get the Star Wars world trailer everyone will just shut up and get hyped.
That's just Disney hype in general.
What would he have thought of Kingdom Hearts?
Not directly KH, but had he lived to see video games in general, he probably would have come up with some interesting projects due to his interest in technology and innovative forms of entertainment.

I think it’s fun. I’m looking forward to four.
Kingdom hearts 3 shat the bed so hard it killed almost half of its fanbase and its popularity
