        New emotion unlocked: French

      Most the emotions are dead.
Maybe ennui, maybe fear are left.
But you can't let the emotions out of control.
So they are like locked in cages.
Perhaps fear locks them up, but fear also locks itself up.

Sadness and Disgust are debating how I felt about Superman Space Age. Sadness admires Mark Russell's knack for stringing together really punchy pop psychology maxims and some even stick with him but Disgust recognizes the mark of an atheist when he sees it and the amount of times that hope is equated with lies sounds like a complete lack of faith despite having Scripture backed morals and messages interspersed throughout the book. Anger started to rant about the social justice stuff but he was quieted early on because it was just Russell offering a version of heroes that would appeal to (for lack of a better term) woke readers that addresses criticisms the characters have been facing almost since inception. It comes from a time when there were infinite earths and in such, this is just a really quotable Elseworld.

Fear didn't chime in on it and Joy popped up here and there but Disgust couldn't help but realize that the ending echoed Judgement Day and New Creation but profaned it by excluding Christ. Superman is a compliment to Jesus, not a replacement.

      Anonymous

It isn't. That's why the resolution at the end of the movie is that they manage to get it out of the way. It's like if Joy's approach to Sadness at the start of the first film (here's your little corner, stay there and don't touch anything) was 100% correct.

There are some important things in life that you have to worry about, and preparing for the worst can be a good thing, just don't let it get the best of you.

        Anonymous

Anxiety only represents an excess of worrying. The other emotions can handle a functional and appropriate amount of worrying all by themselves.

        Anonymous

That’s essentially just fear. Anxiety is redundant, hell, most of the new emotions are.

          Anonymous

That's why the first movie only had 5 core emotions that mix to create new emotions. The 5 new ones are just a retcon by a different director.

            Anonymous

To be fair, the original five-emotion setup isn't perfect (mostly because there are actually six core emotions), but it does work pretty well; and fixing it would require starting over. Taking the new film's setup seriously just produces a mess; even ignoring their poor mesh with the original five emotions, they simply aren't designed as well as a set on their own merits.
I think you can kind of make it work though, in theory, by treating the new five emotions collectively as a second psychological dimension, separating Riley's true self (the original emotional set) from her shadow-self (the new set). The new emotions generally work as counterparts to the old ones. Anxiety, counterintuitively, is the shadow-Joy, not the shadow-Fear. (This is clearer if you've already analyzed Joy well enough to realize she represents short-term and impulsive thinking as much as she represents positive thinking.) Ennui is the shadow-Anger (malice towards others, cold and apathetic hate more sustainable than righteous indignation), Envy the shadow-Disgust (the variations on a theme and purpose here are pretty clear - I'm of the personal opinion that "Disgust" would be better termed "Judgment", although that's a bit headier of a concept to sell to kids), Embarrassment the shadow-Fear (pretty self-explanatory, embarrassment basically being the most useless and pathetic aspects of fear, the deer in headlights with no exit plan), and Nostalgia the shadow-Sadness (the reflective emotion; Sadness was the most sophisticated of the original emotional set so it makes sense for its shadow counterpart to be something that shouldn't even rear its head until a later life stage; Sadness is grief and Nostalgia is acceptance of defeat, an admission that a better world can only be found in memory).

          Anonymous

Correct! Insofar as Pixar manages to salvage this premise, it's because the new emotions are redundant on purpose - they represent dysfunctions, not working parts of the human mind.

Anxiety is how you get gud when you're not mentally healthy enough to have passion and drive like normal people. It's the autismo's version of determination. Stress can also be good for you, and it is almost the same as anxiety. Think along the lines of "exercise stress".

This was the problem I had with the movie. Anxiety makes me not do anything at all, or take the path of least resistance, not suddenly start sociopath climbing. On any given decision theres so much going on on both sides that it just stunlocks. Anxiety in the movie just tunnel visions and completely ignores all the downsides to everything shes doing.

This only happened briefly at the end and I think she was in the penalty box so its not like she could do much anyways. And my heart is not pumping like that in those moments

Like how do you have anxiety about making new friends while not also having anxiety about what old friends will think? How do you have anxiety about whats in coach's notebook while not also having anxiety about getting caught taking the notebook?

              Anonymous

              >Like how do you have anxiety about making new friends while not also having anxiety about what old friends will think?
Riley is in a state of anxiety regardless, but in those cases Anxiety has a primary concern that it can prioritize and plan for, as opposed to several equally important factors. She was more concerned about being alone than what her old friends would think, and more concerned about what was in the notebook than the chances of being caught. It is also possible that she is just impulsive, and doesn't think things through. I, and I suspect you as well, will usually act a bit more indecisively rather than just choose and accept the consequences, hence stunlock I would presume.

Anon being afraid of the future is a good thing, anxiety isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it encourages you to try to avoid a bad outcome. It’s only bad if you let it control your life and either not do anything or over analyze

They really could've just made Fear go berserk in this movie instead of making a whole new emotion and pretending their's something positive about anxiety. They could've even kept the other new emotions and had them encourage fear to be more nervous about the future. Anxiety is the only one that really doesnt fit with the rest of the cast.

Every console decision is a vote where every yay is +1 and every nay is -1. However often times the members either don't vote or vote randomly.

First vote:Deciding the severity of the decision

Small decisions require at least a net zero in favor to inquire about. There won't be a debate unless there a vote for a debate(the rules for the debates are large and complicated).

Moderate decisions require at least a net +1 in favor. A debate is required if there is a nay vote.

Important decisions require at least a net +2 in support of this. This will force everyone to vote whether they want to or not. A debate will instantly be required.

Second vote (after debates): Whether action will be done.

Small decisions:Needs at least at net +2 to go through.with it.

Moderate decisions:Needs at least +3 to go through with it.

Important decisions:Needs at least +5 to go through with it, but it's customary to try and get it to +7.

Sadness currently has the controls and is basically depression.
Fear likes to sometimes give me dreams where everything bad happens to me.
Anger only appears when i'm gaming. And he tends to casually drop swears and slurs like that one uncle.
Disgust got crippled a long time ago and she is stuck in a wheelchair.

Anger and ennui have been in charge for a long time. Joy is still somewhere there. Sadness is in a coma considering all the pills I take. Anxiety is basically libido at this point.
