Whats his problem anyway?

Never read the books. Never heard of dune until the movies. What’s all this talk of billions dead in a jihad? All for revenge of his father? To bring water to arrakis? What’s his long game? I understand why he had to kill the baron and the emperor, but why billions more?

it starts off as the only path for him and his mother to survive in a way that doesn't terrify him (the other paths involve either joining the spacing guild or the harkonnens). but after a point it becomes enacting revenge against the harkonnens and the emperor for his family and the fremen.

So even had his father not been assassinated, or called to arrakis for that matter, he was still going to have to lead a jihad to kill billions, just for humanity to be able to live on, just to keep colonizing planets?

Yup. The BG are the single most powerful players next to the Guild but the Guild was super stagnant.

Oddly enough after Paul came around and fulfilled the prophecy the BG began to stagnate until the Honored Matres showed back up with their weird boner slavery powers

              Anonymous

The BG aren’t officially the most powerful, not even close; they’re the most wormy and among the most cunning, but their influence is in the shadows—and even then they’re not the true shadow government. They’re biding their time, gaining genetic ground, in the absence of overt force and sheer influence.

Their fighters (trained men included) are comparable in capability to the Sardauker. Sure. That’s pretty impressive. They also don’t want people knowing that an immunity to the Voice can be developed, from overuse, and so make use of the Voice sparsely because of this secret weakness.

The single most powerful group is the Guild, and it’s not even a competition. They deny you, you’re fricked. They’re the transporters of politics. Their steersmen are more revered and enigmatic than any given reverend mother.

If his father hadn't been killed, then humanity wouldn't have been in peril in the first place.

The whole problem was that the Emperor betrayed the Great Convention by backing the Harkonnen attack on the Atreides. This treaty had held the galaxy together in mostly peaceful conditions for 10,000 years, but without it, there would be massive interstellar nuclear war in the near-term, followed by something like 40k-style permanent genocidal war and planetary extermination campaigns forever until technological civilization collapsed into a dark age so profound that humanity would never recover.

          >If his father hadn't been killed, then humanity wouldn't have been in peril in the first place.

          Wrong.
The issue with a prescient Kwisatz Haderach is that it will inevitably due to having prescience tie up humanity in a dead end because [reasons].
If Paul didn't become KH, then the Bene Gesserit would've made one in the next generation (or a couple, if there are any further setbacks).
Even though the BG would have control over that KH, the dilemma would still be the same.

That's why it was important for Leto II to do what he did, which required reformatting of all of humanity, introducing prescient genes into the genepool and seeing all of it through as a tyrant.

So that way people can see through the BG and can no longer be manipulated and no more KW type of people can be created and humans can just go back to being, humans ? I might have to read the books. This all sounds like a fun read

            Anonymous

            >because [reasons].
The reason being, having prescience meant Humanity always choose the safest path. This has lead to stagnation. Paul and later, Leto II essentially blue balled Humanity on purpose so much that it eventually exploded in an orgasm of space exploration and rebellion.

The point of Dune, the actual point, is about stories. How we tell stories and how those stories turn into myth and myth into religion and how the truth gets lost along the way.
The BG try to set up all these plans for Dune by seeding all those stories into it. They hope to control the Fremen with all those prophecies they spun many years ago. Instead the story gets away from them and everyone gets swept up into a collective religious fervor, including Paul.
So instead of the spinsters controlling the story, the story ends up controlling the people involved in it.

The sequels, for Paul anyway, are about trying to get away from being railroaded into killing billions of people.

It’s not that women are better soldiers, it’s that during his intentionally stagnant peacetime his fedeykin and sardaukar were committing crimes against civilian populations without an external enemy to fight. Leto ll found women to be less predatory as a permanent occupying force, and with bene gesserit strength/martial arts and technology their physical weakness was less relevant. They were also trained as spies and in the use of sexual coercion and manipulation, so ultimately they act more as secret police and gendarmes.
There are still male armies in planetary defense forces and even some males as officers within the fish speakers themselves, and they are always commanded by a Duncan Idaho clone as well.

I'm going to spoil a lot because I dont give a frick.

Paul gets prescience via Bene G breeding and Spice.
Paul foresees a number of futures that mostly have to do the fate of humanity. Although they're not all completely clear or necessarily going to happen.

Paul is also a frickup, the Bene G have been doing a breeding program for hundreds of years to produce what is effectively a female space Jesus that they can control. Paul's Mom goes rogue and has a son instead for the Duke.

With all that said, Paul knows he's in a spot where basically any choice he makes is going to end up destroying his house, becoming a slave to the Harkonnens (Paul has Harkonnen blood), or end up destroying humanity and/or being controlled.

The only other option is basically the ends justify the means. Cause a shit ton of suffering via a galaxy wide Jihad, because the Fremen think he's their savior (Ironically the Bene G have been manipulating the Fremen for a long time to develope this religious fanaticism). This is the only way things dont get worse.

So, Paul basically gets depressed and follows the path of the Jihad. The Fremen become the dominant fighting force in the galaxy and something like 60 billion people in a huge war to force everyone to accept Paul as god.
After the fact Paul decides to say frick this after all and does a bunch of stupid shit which is ultimately futile and his son becomes an actual demi-god and emperor of literally everyone.

A ton of shit happens in between but by the end of it humanity is saved.

Oh and the water for Arrakis thing is because the Fremen thing Lisan al Gaib (Fremen jesus) will turn Arrakis into a beautiful paradise. Which is again just manipulation via Bene G.

This actually does come to pass later on, but turning Arrakis into a nice place means no sand, which means sand worms cant fart out Spice, which means nobody can do space travel.
So basically even though Fremen are badass they're totally under the spell of manipulation and not even relevant to the endgame

      Anonymous

So if Paul decides to suicide, it would have been too late because by then, the fremen were too worked up AND now had access to his nukes and thus total control of arrakis. So even if he suicided, the end of humanity (or close to) would have happened anyway? Ok I got it. So he takes the path that gets him revenge, dismantles the BG, kills a frickton of people, but ultimately saves humanity. Do I have that right?

      >Paul is also a frickup, the Bene G have been doing a breeding program for hundreds of years to produce what is effectively a female space Jesus that they can control. Paul's Mom goes rogue and has a son instead for the Duke.

      Completely fricking wrong.
The BG already have access to the female side of their ancestral memories. They wanted to create a male that can do the same, a kwisatz haderach. That male would then have the power to access ALL of his ancestral memories, male and female, and could draw upon them for advice and wisdom. Also he'd be able to see the future in a prescient way.

Lady Jessica gave Leto a son because she loved him, which went against her instructions. She was supposed to give him a daughter, who would then be paired with Feyd and that would produce the KH that the BG could control fully. But since Jessica did her thing, the KH-to-be appeared a generation early in Paul.
The entire thing then spun out of BG's control due to various schemes and counter-schemes and Paul became his own person instead of anyone's puppet.

But in the end the future he saw was doomsday for all of humanity looming and inevitable. That made him flip out because he knew what he HAS to do, and that is become what Leto II became instead. Paul didn't have the guts to go through with it but Leto II stepped up and so on...

She didn’t change the embryo from female to male, what she did was refuse to change it from male to female. Paul is not a troony and twitter can frick off.

You should read the books instead of copy pasting wiki articles, stupid motherfricker.

Its unclear if his death stops anything but thats generally the gist.
If he had done so prior to freeing Arrakis and creating the Fedaykiin (Super soldier Fremen), it mightve changed something. But the issue is if he dies and stops it all then humanity is just on a worse fate.

But once the Jihad gets going yeah it kinda doesnt matter. There's some parts about how at that point if Paul dies he'll just become a martyr and make it worse.

Instead he becomes a hermit and self mutilates and ends up doing a 180 and start trying to fight back against what he caused and it just gets him killed.
His son ends up being the real space jesus, controlling the entire galaxy via spice shenanigans. The Bene G survive for the entirety of the 8 books or whatever and almost end up 'winning' at the end but it was all part of ze master plan.

The ending of the entire series is kind of a fart and the last two books go full moron in many ways.

no he didn't use it there. lady jessica told him to "slow down" which clues us in that he wasn't using it. she thought he'd use it, but he didn't.

Leto wanted to use the Fremen as an army. Paul used them as an army.

Dune had a very big overall balance of power between factions so any push would result in a big reaction.
    >Emperor had the best army and control of CHOAM. He doesn't directly control Arrakis as he would have too much power so has a scapegoat in the Harkonnens.
    >CHOAM was the beating heart of the economy and the Emperor had the most shares with silent partners (Spacing Guild/Bene Gesserit) and other prominent houses had shares and directorships.
    >Landsraad (parliament) of noble houses who had conventions on things like use of nuclear weapons or warefare.
    >Spacing Guild with monopoly on travel.
    >Bene Gesserit manipulating politics (also their breeding agenda).

The whole thing starts because the Atreides are gaining too much popularity with the other houses which could lead to war with the Emperor so he chooses to conspire against them. Everything before was a set of checks and balances. Houses fought using intrigue and wars of assassins rather than nukes because other houses would turn on them for using them. Everything was almost for show, rather than direct total war. Paul however changes this because he uses a Bene Gesserit manipulation as well as his abilities to supersede their plans to gain control of an extremely strong and fanatical army. After this there is no checks and balances, there is simply him vs everyone who doesn't bend the knee. And since he controls the spice he basically has all the power in his hand, unlike the Emperor who couldn't do that.

For the book readers do you think the AI coming back as final villain was a bad idea? I mean yeah it was Frank's son that shat out the book but do you think a competent writer could have done justice to the idea

I like the idea that the Butlerian Jihad was really about us overcoming our dependence on technology. The modern day equivalent would be smart phones:
      >people use smart phones and social media and get dumb
      >then other people use that technology to manipulate those people
      >the religious crusade was really about ditching this evolutionary dead end
Instead the Jihad became a Terminator esque war with the eventual return of the Thinking Machine Empire.

Dunc 2024 is amazing. Fixes all pacing issues and has actual characters. I literally slept when watching the first Dunc in the cinema including on the droning music scenes

It's those fricking witch b***hes. His father wanted to make an army out of the Fremen. His mother wanted him to be the Kwizatz Haderach. The Bene Gesserit used the insecurity of the emperor to knock down the first domino, but with the promise that Jessica and Paul would be safe. The stint with the Fremen was a long drawn out Gom Jabbar styled test. Paul passed the test.

He believed his own hype and what his witch wannabe masters told him, aka I'M HIM, messiah, one-of-a-kind etc.
And he believed his hype so good, that he gave a middle finger to witch masters, the ones who tried to murk him, the empire etc.
The guy was made to be a good little turbo goy, but became an uncontrollable cult-of-personality charismatic leader with some superpowers.
