4:3 anime from the 80s and 90s on an RGB CRT is a thing of beauty.

I adore 4:3, it’s the perfect canvas for height and width.
Wider aspect ratios are too constricting in terms of blocking, and less intimate.

Cartoons looked better when this was the dominant ratio, honestly.
Watch 87 ducktales and 17 ducktales and tell me 17 isn't super fricking cramped.

Forces directors to be intentional in what they are or aren't showing. Giant-ass panoramic resolutions distract the eye and were the first step in prioritizing meme tech advancements over intentional, deliberate directorial spirit.

16:9 is somewhat better because rooms are generally wider instead of square shaped, so the theater screen can make better use of the space. 4:3 is the most natural ratio because perfect squares are ugly but it's still close, and camera lenses started out circular and project cleanly onto squares.

    >when you take the 16:9 and get to choose how to focus it into the proper ratio

It's hilarious how 16:9 is just the average of 4:3 and 2.35:1 "Cinemascope." It has no inherent advantage, it's purely a compromise. And now we are all cursed with it. It's especially stupid on computers.

2.35:1 and narrower are bastard ratios. There's very little that benefits from being framed that way.

2.35:1 is absurd and only really has a place for films like Ben Hur where you're not supposed to focus on any one thing. It's the same failed logic behind those moronic curved monitors.

I hated that aspect of that film. Ratio swapping in general is cancer.
