Pretty much, too bad the movie felt extremely rushed and it had the typical problem with badly written movies in which the characters get into dangerous situations solely for their own stupidity.

        >in which the characters get into dangerous situations solely for their own stupidity.
The movie flat out tells the audience the characters only seem to act stupidly because they are all suicidal in their own ways and chose to "self-destruct" in the shimmer. Great film to filter sub 100 iq morons

It's all allegorical for how the main character deals with events that happened to him in real life. It's a pretty good movie, and it's not a typical "monster in the woods" movie. Watch it with the intent to see what story the director is trying to tell.

It's not as deep as I'm making it sound, but it is slightly more deep than most netflix "creepy thing that you see for a few minutes at the the end of the movie" flicks.

Just keep your expectations in check. The designs are really cool, but the movie itself isn't great. What drove me nuts is the way all the creatures act like they are actors in a haunted house attraction - like they just get up in front of the camera and wave their hands around not ever actually putting the protag in any danger

Re7 was full of horror movie references so it makes sense 8 did the same thing. Heisenberg was a Dr. Frankenstein expy so i guess it’s kind of nice to see the root and that they even referenced a more modern production.

Hellboy 1 and 2 had some great monsters. The color out of space and the thing both have good disfigured chimera shit. OP design is amazing btw, watched movie just for that and was not disappointed. Keep meaning to rewatch it to figure out the cult better but it was actually kind of depressing.

      Anonymous

      Here's my take:

Valhalla takes the brave while the Jötunn, in its limited domain, takes the cowards. The cult is a perversion of Valhalla where the faithful are granted an eternal "life" of kneeling in fear and submission before their god. Personally, I think you can either read the "Upper Room" scene as the Jötunn mocking Christianity or the writer himself doing so by contrasting the pagan belief that by living a life of valor, the gods honor your courage; whereas Christianity rewards your godfearing ways in an afterlife singing praises. That's how I interpret the room of undead chanters - the Jötunn's "Heavenly Choir."

        Anonymous

Very interesting take, ty for your thoughts. I agree, from an outside perspective Christianity looks pretty bizarre. I don't know why I didn't relate it to an actual afterlife. I need to rewatch because I know I missed a lot given I didnt expect what it was but instead a generic monster movie. It did seem to me as a sort of purgatory he passed through though, so the rest tracks.

        >monster is original

It's essentially like the alien from The Thing but with the spikes gimmick.

The way it moves and acts is completely bug/robot like. The Thing has unpredictable motivations, but it is obviously sentient. I think lots is different and it doesn't seem to be any sort of homage or anything. I'm a huge fan of The Thing and I didn't even make that connection. They do have similarities, but the atmosphere is so different.

unironically, why should it matter? Film is art, it;s human expression, if someone wants there to be some weird kind shit in their expression, fine. What pisses me off is it's only valid if it's for WOMEN. The Shape of Water, Twilight, 50 shades etc all received praise of some kind but god forbid some man make a monster girl movie.

probably because the director had to try and even it out so people wouldnt be upset hes making his tentacle porno movie with them. When you try and please everyone, you end up pleasing no one.

I'm not saying it isn't spooky in the context of the movie. I'm just saying that the creature design by itself is not that spooky or interesting imo. It's like old Greek shit where they just mashed two or three ordinary animals together.

It forces people to worship it granting them eternal life in return. Should they refuse it crucifies them on nearby trees. Power-wise it's got some sort of illusion thing too.

Well apart from being 29 feet tall and kinda strong and fairly well camouflaged, it makes you hallucinate vividly with god-psychic powers and then grabs you and impales you on a tree while you are hallucinating if you fail to worship it and pledge obedience (for which it grants you eternal life, although not youth, and it seems fickle about who it chooses)

We were so amped to see the new highly talked horror movie that we pretty much deluded ourselves into taking the movie seriously, despite finding it somewhat boring.
