It's a weird and absurdist movie but it's essentially a 'break up movie' taken to the extreme. Zulawski was going through a divorce at the time of making this. It's showing everything about it. The arguing, the frustration, the insecurites and jealousy a man often goes through thinking about what she's doing (and who she's doing) now after she's gone. Is she with someone better? And this movie answers those questions with a 'Yes.' Not only is her new partner better than you, he's taken her to levels of pleasure you've never even thought of because this new partner is not even human, it's a fricking eldritch tentacle monster with super powers. And that's where the absurdist and horror parts come in.

Looks like I'm going to be the first poster to actually give you a fricking answer, what is this shit thread

the bandage scarf was peak. such a kino look

yeah I'm really thankful to you for coming up with an actual response. some of the other posters weren't exactly pulling my leg, I guess that's just fourchan's style. but what about the doppelgangers? what about her cheating not only on her husband, but the guy she cheated on him with as well? what did she give birth to and why? how do the ginger-haired woman and the detective murders tie into the story? if she hated her husband so much, why did she still have sex with him once in the kitchen? what is the faith and truth monologue's meaning?

Trust a Cinemaphilener to focus on the sex part, the point is both the doppelgangers are "model" spouses, not just sexually, people on here pay way too much attention to one scene.

Also there's a bunch of political subtext about the cold war and authoritarian soviet style communist states.

The doppelgangers are their idealized versions of each other. The "possession" in the title is referring to the idea of ownership of your spouse. Anna and Mark don't like the real versions of each other so they drift apart and create their ideal partners.

oh, oh! wanna hear something hilarious? I was piling through reviews of the film on youtube and one of the comments was some dude complaining about her looking directly at the camera by saying "and hello to our viewers at home!". the reason people are allowed to be mad at dunces like this one is because even if you haven't watched the film yourself, you can still tell by the effects that it's someone shooting her within a film per the plot, so she's actually supposed to look at the camera. that comment was so moronic I sort of believe the guy was trolling

This implies that mediterraneans are not white, but this is not true. European mediterraneans are European and thus white whereas countries bordering the mediterranean that are not in Europe are not white.

Usually surreal movies have a coherent plot underneath the surface level of what's happening, but sometimes they are so heavily symbolic that there's legitimately no logical explanation for some of the stuff that happens. Possession is one of the latter.
I can't go into detail because I'd have to watch the film again, but the main thing is that it's about the director divorcing his wife which happened a few years before the movie was released. He also throws some subtext in there about the Iron Curtain.
But the important thing is there's no puzzle to fit together like for example in David Lynch's movies. He was just venting his emotions.

French girls are utterly insane. Avoid at all costs. I don't know how or why but they have a completely different view of sex than any other nationality of women on earth. It is just 'fun' to them, they will always cheat, to them it is completely unemotional and just something to do, a meaningless act. They will never be faithful to you. They are also the most crazy feminist of all women.

I always thought that Vincent Canby's review of possession was odd. He wrote, "At times, the living-color Possession recalls Roman Polanski's black-and-white Repulsion, though only because Miss Adjani is required to slice up as many male victims as Catherine Deneuve did in the earlier, far better film. I don't understand the comparison with Repulsion at all really

    >what's the meaning behind possession (1981)? could you please explain the symbolism and the messages it has?
Infedelity takes a psychological toll on both the perpetrator and the victim which is represented by a cosmic horror in the movie. If you are from le current year you could also celebrate the narcisistic, evil woman for being empowered or something along those lines.
