Are we talking "intended genre subversion is actually less subversive than the genre entry it's primarily attacking?" Are we talking, "intended genre subversion relies on lack of player choice alternatives to criticize player choices?" Are we talking, "intended genre subversion relies on meta arguments but used obfuscation to attract players then refused to accept meta criticisms?" Or are we talking, "creators release a halfassed genre subversion then b***h when people don't suck their dick nonstop?"

The ultimates started out as marvel watchmen but the sequel became pro superheroes. Has this happened before?

Depends, do you mean a meta game that criticizes the genre, or do you mean an overhyped piece of fricking shit that you had to pay 60 bucks for and when you criticize the guys that made it all they say is "if you don't like the ending all you have to do is not play the 60 dollar game you paid for".

      >Depends, do you mean a meta game that criticizes the genre
And being a bad game in said genre while using being meta as a narrative defense.
      >or do you mean an overhyped piece of fricking shit that you had to pay 60 bucks for and when you criticize the guys that made it all they say is "if you don't like the ending all you have to do is not play the 60 dollar game you paid for".
Pretty much me after buying Mark Millar Wanted new because I liked the wanted movie and video game.

You have to be actually moronic to legitimately believe this was the narrative when the game came out.

Your game isn't as artsy or as high class as you would like to believe.

troons hate Spec Ops btw. Reset Era is where the hate started. good job being a mouthpiece and a wienerholster for the troon gang.

Would a fourth-waller that goes through The Horrors and comes out the end saying "why didn't you stop watching at any point?" be close enough? It'd probably be Deadpool with that in mind. I don't think it'd be good I'm just going for closest similarity.

The execution of the game is mediocre because you can't attack a player for his choices (The load screens addresses the player) when you aren't giving him any choices. Undertale did a better job

This game would have much more impact if there was a hidden route you could take. Like a way to sneak past enemies and avoid much of the major events of the game. This route wouldn't be something thats specified as well, you'd have to be an eagle eyed player to find it. Otherwise its just lecturing the player on their choices in a game that afforded them none. I sure as frick didn't want to use white phosperous but it didn't give me a choice.

this was the first game i ever played where i went "that was fricking moronic" after finishing it, and it's exactly because of this

The overarching situation was out of your control and you were acting from a knowledge deficit, but you still killed people in horrific ways. It was both a choice and wasn't. The point wasn't right or wrong, good or bad, it was empathy for people put in these impossible situations: the victims, the soldiers, everyone except those calling shots from on high who have true responsibility (but not accountability). You're supposed to walk away with a better appreciation of what it means to live in a world with flexible truths but indelible realities and consequences. You're supposed to understand that tactics aren't enough; a strategic view on your actions and how to make them align with your values is necessary. "You made me the bad guy and it made me feel bad," is an admission of filtering and a lack of cognitive sophistication.

Then why does the game call you out for it?

Because otherwise people would rationalize their behavior and walk away without serious introspection. Evoking cognitive dissonance is key to the exercise.

But the whole point is that the plot is linear. This wasn't a stealth game with a pacifist route and branching storylines; it was just one of those games where you shoot people to death. In most other games like this, the plot requires you to shoot people and become the hero. In this one, the plot requires you to shoot people and become the villain.

It's fine enough to experience various kinds of emotions because a fictional work makes you feel them. But fiction and real life are still on entirely different levels. You don't have to self-insert to the player character so intensely that you feel insulted or personally responsible when something bad happens to him. Walker might be a mental wreck after everything he's done, but for you there's distance to the events. It was just a videogame, and nobody died for real.

Huh, I guess that's a pretty fitting answer.

I feel like I'm a crazy person here. I've always taken the game as a commentary on the state of video game FPS protagonists.

They have no agency because the player is making the choice for the character. The game is not berating the player for killing those people, but actually simply attacking the character and their lack of choice in this situation.

IIRC there's a line in the game that implies that you've been through this entire experience before and the outcome remained the same. Which adds on to the game taunting and punishing the character over their lack of agency in the entire situation.

Probably Hazbin/Helluva, if you're talking about really obvious months-long viral marketing campaigns on their respective Cinemaphile boards. 2K did quite a few of those in those years.
