Good. The story is quite standard and predictable but it is comfy to the max. New camera techniques really paid off and made the flight scenes a lot better and interactive for the viewer. first of all it was a rethread of the scene with the hind
second of all if you must have it, don't pull the 3rd enemy out of your ass going head on and have hangman save them from the 2nd one
surprise gunning down 1 and holding out on your own against another is a feat enough
they keep blabbing the whole time about how they stand no chance against 5th gen fighters but they don't show anything for it beyond that wacky maneuver
there's nothing that indicates generational leap in avionics, stealth, long range and other technology
at least the 2 getting into dogfight were plausible enough as they were already close range dude to the enemy apparently having no comms at all
apart from that moment when tomahawks hit the runway and there's a cut tothose 2 immediately banking as if they had any way to know what just happened this very second

              >cut tothose 2 immediately banking as if they had any way to know what just happened this very second

You do know that the base radioed them about the attack, right? And that the country certainly has access to satellite coverage (if they have 5th gen fighters, they have satellite coverage) to notice the base being blown up

                Anonymous

of course I know that is exactly what I'm alluding to but the editing left ZERO time for real reaction and communication it was immediate
yet they get no info about insane unsanctioned lift off from a demolished runway of a non-responding f-14

maybe the com equipment at the airbase was destroyed or everyone else was too distracted putting out fires and pulling people out of rubble to pay attention to the f14 taking off or everyone there just thought the f14 was taking off to stop more attacks or something.

Tom Cruise is genuinely so based for making the other actors go on a 3 month crash course to learn how ro fly jets. Ensuring all the jet scenes are done practically genuinely makes it worth the watch.

The last movie that felt so exciting and had such well filmed and co-ordinated action sequences was Mad Max Fury Road, though I also loved MI: Fallout. The use of fighter jets and knowing that a lot of it is practical just makes this even better though. I've never seen a movie that made me say "holy shit" so many times.

It had bad pacing. It was obvious they shot like 3 different movies before cutting together the "best" bits into some sort of narrative. A lot of the acting was really poor.

The Maverick/Rooster relationship felt really weird and didn't make a whole lot of sense. It felt like there was supposed to be a lot more development, like we were supposed to see more of their relationship when Bradly was younger. Ultimately it felt like Maverick had just been stalking him his entire life. On top of that Rooster was born in like 83 so he should have been almost 40, but they portrayed him like he was in his mid to late 20's.

Overall its a shame that in "current year" a remarkably average movie is great because it is one of the only releases that Isn't completely pozzed.

3/10. Build up to the ending as well as the ending was real dumb. Lets compare it to the end of Star Wars A New Hope with the Death Star run
    Star Wars:
    >rebels talk about how the Death Star attack will be a very dangerous mission, borderline suicide
    >numerous pilots die in the attack
    >rebels say that to destroy the Death Star you have to shoot a torpedo into an air shaft. All the pilots say this is impossible but Luke points out "we used to shoot wompa rats no bigger than that"
    >Luke then shoots torpedo through the airshaft
    This is good writing.
    Now here's Top Gun Maverick:
    >Navy admirals and Mav talk about how the attack on the nuclear site will be a very dangerous mission, borderline suicide
    >but don't worry, literally not a single American pilot dies
    >Navy admirals and Mav talk about how their F18s are no match for the 5th gen Russian fighers in a dog fight
    >but don't worry, Mav defeats 2 of these 5th gen fighters with an even older F14 that he stole from a Russian garage (and which clearly wasn't maintained because the ejection hatch didn't work)
    This is poor screenwriting.

Or maybe the movie named Top Gun: Maverick is about how Maverick, who you may remember from the movie's title, is a really good pilot and can complete the extremely difficult mission. Or maybe it's also about the fact that the movie states multiple times that it's not the plane, it's the pilot, and in this case the pilot is Maverick, who you may remember as the titular character that the movie frequently establishes is the best pilot.

Nonsense. Even Mav said "we should have F35s against these 5th gens, but since we have to use F18s, we have to avoid dogfighting". The idea that an barely maintained F14 could beat 2 5th gens after Mavs statement is nonsense.

I have watched the movie twice and they never say they have to avoid dogfighting. Dogfighting is literally the reason Maverick is there, as they know the mission will likely require them to engage in a dogfight to escape successfully, and the current generation's pilots have practically no dogfighting experience.

            >I have watched the movie twice and they never say they have to avoid dogfighting.
Wrong moron. This is how the first mission briefing goes
            >"We should go in with F35s, but because of jamming and blah blah we have to use F18s. But waiting for us will be 5th gen fighters and we don't want to engage them".
And at the meeting after Mav is taken off the mission Jon Hamm says "Here's our new plan, if possible you may have to engage 5th gen fighters" and all the pilots mutter under their breath how this is a bad idea.

Got the vibe Mad Men knew it was more or less a suicide mission, as the main obstacle was leaving the target zone and getting back (which came across more difficult then the bomb drop), and was willing to concede losses at that point.

your 2nd scoring is totally valid but how much of a homosexual do you have to be to think the chick from the first one was a 4

it doesnt really matter why they used F18s instead of 5th gens, its not about making sense, its about making you feel cool as hell

5th gen is classified, a civilian wouldn't be allowed near one, never mind a film crew putting cameras in the wienerpit and filming manoeuvres

So the canyon run needed to be done at high speed because the enemy knows they will be coming after the cruise missile strike on the airfield. Why couldn't they way until the planes are almost there before launching the tomahawk missiles instead of right as the planes get to the canyon? That way they can go in slow and come out slow without having to take on 9-10Gs. Hell they could even do a loop and come out the way they came in and avoid the sams altogether.

I still don't understand why they were so vague with who they're fighting, it can't be a former Soviet state because they never had f-14s. So that leaves Iran, but Iran doesn't have su-57s and the landscape didn't really look like Iran.

      >why they were so vague
Because if it was specific, this board would be swarmed with dozens of threads made by that country's shill bots. Tom was looking out for us

They purposefully left it vague. They say it's a "rogue state". They did the same in TG1, although it was implied it was Libya

They explicitly say Iran later in the movie. Basically right before the mission.

Movies do that all the time because they don't want to get fricking suicide bombed or something. They mention Iran at the start, but the actual country they go to is left vague on purpose though it's still most like Iran.

Those scenes take place in the Indian Ocean and the enemy had MiG fighters so it was probably an Asian communist country like China or Vietnam.

they uranium enrichment and local ally immediately made me think of iran
I'm guessing they rightfully don't want to antagonize iran for no reason
especially now with the russian oil problems and all, iran is pretty important in that regard
although the decision was probably made long before the war
they were just writing for plot convenience
