Well for one thing this thread is legitimately the first time that I have heard of it.
    Looks pretty cool.

Legitimately sad. Not for you, but for the state of things. It was released in America theaters a few weeks ago, and received a Cannes Selection award but fricking no one on Cinemaphile has seen it? Jesus Christ.

Foreign animation that isn't Japanese is crazy niche for whatever reason even if a lot of it is exactly what a lot of anons want.
Hell, this movie has been out since 2021 and I still haven't found anywhere to watch it.

There are hundreds of 2D movies made in America and Europe every year and Cinemaphile ignores all of them. These film festivals are curated and tailor-made for you, but leaving your house is anathema to... all of Cinemaphile actually.

Isn't everything foreign niche over there in freedomland? I was under the impression you don't watch even live action stuff unless it's refilmed "for an American audience" and that if it wasn't for the weeb contingent the country would disappear entirely up its own backside.

            You aren't really wrong.
Anime, karate movies and a few odds and ends like Godzilla movies and K-dramas are pretty common to see. Anything else foreign that isn't already in English is pretty much considered film nerd stuff.

Not that anon, but I'm generally unaware of pretty much everything in pop culture. I download shows and movies so I didn't see TV spots for new shows or movies.
Also, I don't have social media and never have. People IRL look at me like I've suddenly sprouted eighteen new heads when I tell them that, especially my kid's teacher.
Anyway, due to that lack of social media and exposure to advertising, I have no idea what movies or TV shows or anything have come out or are coming out unless mentioned here, someone tells me about it IRL, I see it on BestSeries or it's such an enormous phenomenon that it's inescapable even to my Luddite ass.
And no, my YouTube doesn't suggest anything like that at me, either. It's mostly opera performances on there.

This basically. Unless it is an inescapable cultural phenomenon or something from the horror or anime communities I am basically clueless when it comes to new media.
I get most of my animation news from Cinemaphile and we almost never go very far below surface level stuff these days.

We had a big thread about it a while ago. But it's one of those films you have to hear about some way or another, if that makes sense. I hadn't heard about it until a friend asked if I wanted to go see it, and it was showing in our local arthouse theater, not in the big ones. It was a week day, but there wasn't a big audience. Half of the people there were old people, who I guess just habitually visit the theater for artsy-fartsy movies. My two friends still somehow managed to run into someone they know, which I guess hints at the audience being rather specific.

Saw a rip thread earlier but haven't watched it, like the art style. Getting somewhat adjacent vibes to Pantheon, is it any similar?

      Pantheon is far better

      Anonymous

The themes are similar but the tone is totally different. Mars Express is basically a hard-boiled story but with a sci-fi setting, Pantheon is like a proper science-fiction story but written for teenagers.

      Anonymous

It's similar to Pantheon but the writers behind Mars Express were actually familiar with the tech they were writing about, unlike Pantheon where it felt like they're just making shit up as they go (especially in the 2nd season)

I was interested but not interested enough to pay for the drive all the way out to the one or two theaters that were showing it. I haven't gone to the movies since Boy and the Heron, but I do plan on checking out Robot Dreams once that releases. I'll probably buy Mars Express on Blu-Ray.
