I like a bunch but the episode where ms Finster baby sits Spinelli is probably my favorite. Also like the one where their stuck inside because of the rain

i love that the adults werent portrayed as kid-hating monsters, but your kid-self still saw them mostly like it, except in episodes like that.
the tone of them really changes when you watch it as an adult.
I’ve been binge watching them on YouTube recently and your right they hit different as an adult. I just watched The episode where principle prickly gets hypnotized into thinking he’s 6 and at the end when the gang breaks the news and tells him he’s actually a 50 year old man and prickly breaks down and doesn’t want to believe it is really sad.
How does stand against
?
>The movie were the principals b***hes at TJ
God that shit hits harder now than it did as a kid.
The one where TJ learns that black kid hates him.
That’s because TJ had a black friend, and he thought he could get away with saying it. That whole episode tackled that topic. TJ was a “ga” guy, not “er”. He was decent that way.
The economics episode.
The one with the sticker economy where T.J. starts at the bottom and climbs to the top it is a good one. The black and white noir style episode where Gretchen dives into the underbelly of the school to try and find her mini computer is really good to. It’s such a good show bros
The sticker one was fricking great. I showed that to my nephews and they loved it as much as I did.
>Cause were the men from over there there there
ones that stick out as memorable to me:
when the ashleys rate everyone 0-10
the ajimbo card game
the box
>when the ashleys rate everyone 0-10
We're the niiiiiiines, and they're the eights
They're the eights, but we're the niiiiiiiines
that ajimbo episode hit close to home...reminded me of when pokemon cards were such a huge thing in grade school only to get to high school and suddenly it's all about yugioh cards no one cares about pokemon ones anymore
El Diablo
The fricking ending where he walks off into the sunset and some kid calls out that school still isn't over still gets me.
>They say you can't judge a book by it's cover, I guess the same is true of a kid. Even I didn't think Safety Man had it in him but, boy did he! Eventually I stopped calling him Safety Man and started calling him just Gus, but in my heart, he'll always be... El Diablo! My hero!
Came back safety kid, schools not over yet!
So good Safety Man.
Spinelli becoming an Ashley member and the card economy episode
sublime taste
The most memorable eps i can still remember to this day (must have been 15-20 years ago i watched recess) :
The ep where TJ can't find out a purpose/direction in life and the guy in the limo at the end gives him the talk that its okay not to know how it all goes right away
The ep where Spinelli becomes an ashley/
The ep where that one kid doesnt like TJ no matter how hard he tries to get him to
The ep where TJ (cant remember if its actually TJ) becomes king of the playground instead of king bob.
oh and one more
The episode where TJ is held in the box and goes insane. God Recess was such a well written show.
>The ep where TJ can't find out a purpose/direction in life and the guy in the limo at the end gives him the talk that its okay not to know how it all goes right away
"right away" haha, yeah. good thing they didn't give an actual time frame or anything to know when to actually panic and get your shit together.
>he’s actually a 50 year old man and prickly breaks down and doesn’t want to believe it is really sad.
14 more years
He gave that speech to Spinelli not Tj, get with it.
When TJ becomes a principle.
I liked the one where TJ and Ashley A. worked together and were a nigh unstoppable duo. I love episodes like that, where two people who despise each other are put together & become perfect partners. Like the Wendy & Cartman episode/racist flag episode in South Park.
When TJ is forced to hang out inside with the nerds but ends up enjoying playing their D&D game with them and doesn't want to go back outside was pretty wholesome.
This one was the best.
>"Whatd you freaks do to Tiny Sedgewick?"
>"Larson you fool, I AM Tiny Sedgewick"
Fricking kino
Why didn't filmore ever black his partner?
you're such a freak
The only one I really remember is when they got captured by the kindergarteners who are some sort of weird monarchist tribal society
I never liked this episodes on tv shows because there never was continuity. I remember when i was young thinking "How come everyone acts like nothing from before has ever happened"
non-continuity shows are most kino because it gives the writers complete freedom to create any story or message they want. It also actually takes a lot of skill and writing talent to be able to fit a self-contained story in 10-20 minutes with established characters.
It also creates an accesibility to the show that is unparalleled. There is no 'getting in' to the show because you can watch literally any episodeo of any season. Nothing has to be watched in order. The show can be watched as casually or as religiously as you like. It takes advantage of the shorter runtime of television
Its the beauty of stuff like south park, the simpsons or recess. We need more shows without continuity. Its a shame that with streaming platforms they are coming to an end. They are a product of their time it seems.
True, but think about shows like the Simpsons or Family Guy where the characters become more and more one-dimensional.
thats inevitable. simpsons would have gone down in history as the greatest animated show ever if they killed it at season 10.
Even if it was killed in season 15-18 ot would still be remembered like that.
Having shitty last seasons didn't stop Office, seindfield and Friends , it wont stop a show with better and funnier early seasons
You just pretend the seasons after it went to shit don't exist.
self contained or an overarching story, no show does more than a half dozen seasons without inevitably fricking up a bunch
I went to see the movie with my dad when i was young. All i remember is being happy and the movie teather being on a second floor of some building. Much simpler times, man im old.
The one where the fat kid could only sing in the toilet so they build a stage around it or something kek.
All the episodes are on YouTube
That's a straight rip-off of The Flintstones but I'll allow it.
I can't even pick a favorite because there are so many. This was such an amazing show. I don't remember episodes being just "there," nearly every one of them was memorable.
garbage show fillmore was better
Fillmore was alright but it was more formulaic. There's a chase scene in every episode
Filmore is way more stylized, and u think it's formula serves it well--that's just the nature of the procedural conceit.
> I'll let you in on a little secret, Detweiller. Every adult you've ever known was a kid at sometime in his life. You think we don't remember summer vacation? Riding our bikes down the creek. Catching polliwogs in a jar. Camping out under the stars. Well you're wrong! Sometimes I sit there in my office, looking out at you kids in the playground and I think, "They don't know how good they got it. In a few years, they'll be grownups like me and all those good times will be memories for them, too". So go ahead. Put a whoopie-cushion in my chair. Put fake vomit on my carpet. Watch Vince breed Spinelli on the jungle gym, Make fun of my "big, saggy butt". But don't ever say I don't care about summer vacation, 'cause those memories are the last part of childhood I got left.
At 30 it finally hits hard.
This shit used to stop me dead when I was a kid like God damn, what an amazing show
subtle and funny. i like it
Shit hit hard as a kid and even harder as an adult, what i would give to have 30 mins of mindless fun on the playground again.
>Come September you're mine, Detweiler! I still haven't forgotten that saggy butt comment!
>September's a long way off!
God it rakes the coals of the soul.
This always was, and will remain, one of the best Cinemaphile memes
you frick, frick you
The one episode there TJ ate Spinelli out behind the jungle gym
The Womps episode
Who's your fav character? Mine's Gus.
Gus' Dad was always my favourite
>Gosh! Who'd have thought? Little Belgium winning over big Germany!
>Winning? Ha! They got the stuffing kicked out of them!
Oh I just remembered, I think my favorite is when they assault the Fort.
The christmas episode makes me cry.
I used to hate shows like this as a kid. Always thought they were boring as frick. Doug, Recess, Rocket Power, As Told by Ginger, etc. I don't what genre they fit in, kind of sitcommy dramas I suppose? I don't know, but as a kid if it didn't have any fantasy elements at all I fricking hated it.
Well thats pretty gay. Nothing better than coming home and watching Recess then the Weekenders after school.
The Weekenders was unironically funny as frick and super cosy
https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Gretchen%20Grundler*s*Erwin%20Lawson/works
>Weekenders
https://archiveofourown.org/works/9499943
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18165257
The fact that the Weekenders isn't on Disney + pisses me off. My favourite Disney show. Recess is a close second, with Filmore + Kim Possible also in the mix.
Cast them.
Idris Elba
T.J. - Dylan Maxwell
Gus - DJ Qualls or Paul Dano
Mikey - Brett Kelly
Vince - Idris Elba
Gretchen - Anya Taylor-Joy
Spenelli - Maya Hawke
When TJ goes to court over a word he said.
What word was it?
TJ's favorite word Whomps
The one where the class hamster died.
The one where they knock over the statue of Thaddeus T Third the Third
I vividly remember how the town mayor acted like a moron in both episodes.
The only episode I remember is the heatwave one and the gang are trying to get to the other end of the field for whatever reason, and it's treated like they are crossing a desert
They're going to make a continuation for Disney+ aren't they...
Yep and it will be gayged to high Heaven and every Ashley will get blacked and nogged
Recess has always had black kids and you're everything wrong with Cinemaphile right now
Have sex.
Project virgin
>t. Black person
Ahah
Hey guy
Have sex
>seething
>Dry penis
>t. cut penis off
t. Dry penis
>Project Virgin
What's that, your band's name?
Did this show actually age decently? Never even gave it a chance in my adult years because I've always felt like it would have been one of the more poorly-aged cartoons from that time.
Definitely aged pretty well. One of those kids cartoons that doesn't treat it's audience like dumb kids so the messages still resonate.
It's up there with Ed, Edd n Eddy & Hey Arnold.
too many good ones
>the yo yo episode
>the R.E.C.E.S.S episode
>the one where gus decides he's gonna live in the jungle gym
>the monstickers episode
>the SAL 3000 episode
also the movie was really surprisingly good. like the animation was bad for Disney standards but it was quite well written, it captures how summers used to feel when I was a kid.
Oh also
>that episode where the gang pretend to be Randall's friends to impress his dad
Great reveal when his dad is relieved he has no friends and is a loser loner like him.
Oh and the ME NO KNOW episode where Vince is behind on pop culture references
Also the one where one of the gang steals something from the store and feels guilty about it
Also the one where TJ plays DnD with Knarf and the nerds
And the one where the gang buddy up with old people in the community, and Gretchen is buddies with some dude who worked in the manhattan project
And the ep where TJ puts together a school project overnight
And the ep where they have to talk about their best friend in class but one of them doesn't have 1 best friend, he has 5
I'll stop now, too many good episodes.
>Also the one where one of the gang steals something from the store and feels guilty about it
99% sure it was Gus, I think he stole some sort of candy
>And the one where the gang buddy up with old people in the community, and Gretchen is buddies with some dude who worked in the manhattan project
That's the one where they were supposed to go to a superhero convention and the guy TJ meets is the guy who invented the superhero, kek.
>Randall helps the gang get TJ out of trouble
>Randall's dad sees it and tells on them to Miss Finster like a little kid
Still makes me laugh to this day.
the zombie episode
The one where TJ uses trading cards to take over the recess economy
>Recess
>the Weekenders
>Filmore
>Kim Possible
pure soul
Okay was Spinelli asian or italian?
Italian
She always looked like a southeast asian to me, like a filipina or something. I refuse to believe otherwise.
Maybe she was adopted
That was the vibe I got also. I just for some reason assumed it was a "kid looks quite different from the parents so they're adopted but it's not a big deal so the show doesn't address it" thing. There was actually a lot of that in that era of cartoons. Even had shit like powerpuff girls and cow&chicken.
>Spinelli
she's Italian
God, Spinelli's mom was so hot. Better than her punk fake mom tbh
>Spinelli's dad is DSP
The tomacco episode
ahhh Spinelli. A crush of mine before i knew what crushes were. I'm still chasing that archetype she, Raven and Buttercup ingrained into me
Dude their cartoons
What's it like living an autistic reality? Let me guess, you didn't get your first bone watching Sailor Moon? Kek. Go suck off a guy.
Same
I wanted to protect library kid
you guys have good taste. most of my favorite episodes have been covered but heres a few more
>the episode where it rains for days straight and the kids almost lose it because they have to endure indoor recess
>pharaoh bob
King Bob episodes were based, the episode where King Bob forces them to use game rules from the Depression is great too
>it ain't so funny bein walkin talkin apple sauce once the flies start comin round
Psychological horror kino
Western kino.
Rags to riches kino.
Recess had it all.
Thoughts criticisms point of interest?
fricking loved this as a kid
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt,
His name is my name too.
Whenever we go out,
The people always shout,
There goes John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.
Dah dah dah dah, dah dah dah
https://www.archiveofourown.org/tags/Gretchen%20Grundler*s*Erwin%20Lawson/works
This was my favorite show. Three more eps I loved
>defending the jungle gym from demolition
>the mud war
>that weird ass episode where everyone gets taken over by that trading card game involving animals and turn into basically zombies.
>What was King Bob’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these Kindergarteners? By the end of recess, Miss Finster is gone but all of the Kindergarteners aren’t gone – they’re on the jungle gym. Did King Bob pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby kindergarteners, in their little kindergartener cradles?
Well he did have the gum tax which TJ mentioned means every time he buys a pack King Bob gets four pieces for every one he keeps. But this unpopular tax was repealed at the end of the episode Pharaoh Bob in order to satisfy his subjects after the pyramid fiasco .
it was a good show. even as a kid though, it bothered me how often they resorted to
>and then everyone stood up and cheered
in the most unlikely of situations. also mikey was a great big fat frick and the way he'd go all sensual when he smelled food was nauseating.
Kek Mikey was a glutenous frick still love the big guy. I liked the episode where him and kurst the worst became friends because they loved to shovel food into their faces. Irish green Icecream Sundays brought them together, Was beautiful lol
this was a great show, gone off TV far too soon. probably one of the last really intelligent kids' shows.
The yoyo episode lives in my mind forever
For me, its Fort Tender
Patrician
Best Ashley?
Ashley A’s mom
were the ashleys supposed to be a Heathers reference?
Ashely a>Ashley q> the rest
Ashley A. > Ashley B. > Ashley S. > Ashley N.
>spinelli looks asian
>mom is white and dad is italian
dad was cucked by a philipino i guess
Picture Day where they have to survive the entire day without getting dirty.
Was he /ourguy/?
It's Racecar Johnny.
>bullies the black guy
Cinemaphile wishes
Mogged by
So, if Disney somehow decides to give this series an "end", how BADLY will they frick it? Probably TJ doesn't end up with Spinelli
Any episode with Spinelli's mom
katy sagals voice makes me diamonds
This TV show was pure SOVL. We were lucky to have it as kids. I remember when the Recess Movie came out. I think I was the first to get it at our local movie rental store. It was great.
How did Disney go from making so many great cartoons during that era to just instantly drop all cartoons and just do life action bullshit?
Money
i will kick no more forever
the game
the challenge
soccer boy
chez vince
madness of kingbob
pharaoh bob
dont ask me
old folks home
first picture show
the barnaby boys
lord of the nerds

damn it, I only ever watched this show every now and then. it was never regular for me.
sounds like I missed out on some genuine kidkino.
Can confirm it's worth a marathon today.
