Eh, he's no-shit saved the entire world multiple times over, he's earned the right to say no touchy over some of his stuff. He still should have tracked them down afterward at least.

          >innocents got fricked over
Naw they can frick off. They joined Tesladyne fully aware of its action-science reputation. They stuck with it after years of it being on the front line of defending against threats both novel and familiar. They lose the one single time and want to pretend they've been viciously wronged? Piss off, any other R&D lab would've taken them, they just wanted the benefits of a boss who doesn't give a shit about normal procedures but then complain about the exact problems that are expected from that boss.

Stepping out of the story though, I'd argue that this really doesn't gel with how they were written in the old days. Not that they were super deep, but even then, this is one hell of a stretch. It comes off as Brian responding to the occasional "so what, Robo really never gave a damn about his old friends?" by writing a story where it turns out that it's okay for Robo to have never made any effort by establishing them as evil.

It isn't making for an enjoyable story.

How was he even remotely in the wrong, it was totally outside of his control, it was a secret raid conducted specifically when he was out of the country, and he got blown up to the fricking 1800s before he was even aware of it.

He brought Ultra's action to light and it got dismantled IIRC. Early in the arc where he got rebooted in the 21st they mentioned that the Tesladyne scientists were either in hiding, working for Ultra or dead. The first two got taken care of when Ultra was gone and the third he can't do anything about.

What was he supposed to do, track down each ex-member of his payroll after they have no reason to hide?

                >What was he supposed to do, track down each ex-member of his payroll after they have no reason to hide?

I feel like there had to be something in between personally tracking them all down for personal assurances and just shrugging off that all his old friends were gone after they'd been through a pretty terrible experience.

More than that I feel like this is a terrible direction to go with "whatever happened to those guys?"

                Anonymous

Yeah it's a fake problem, no one in the comic even hinted before that once Ultra was defeated some Tesladyne scientists were still involved in shady stuff against their wills. Not Robo, not his humans colleagues, no one.

It feels like Brian writing a weird "take that" against his younger self. The Science Adventurers were fun good guys that were (like Robo) a little lackadaisical with the dangers of SCIENCE. So... that makes them badguys by the comic's current standards? And damn what a shitty way to finally show what happened to them. Instead of showing Robo making an effort to find out what happened to his old pals, they just show up all crazed up and evil now.

Keep this thread alive for a couple hours and we'll see what kind of reasoning they have for being baddie, maybe.

                Anonymous

I think there is an argument to be said that Robo could have, and should have, done more. But that, simply as a result of how long he has lived and the very dangerous line of work that he is in, Robo has gotten used to losing people. Too used to losing people.

When one of his people die, he is sad about it. But then he moves on. He doesn't linger. So in the chaotic aftermath of Tesladyne getting exploded and him getting sent on a trip through time, Robo was maybe a bit too quick to write off people that he should have been out there looking for. He is not an emotionless detached machine, but he HAD become jaded about this sort of thing. Across his science adventures, a LOT of people working for Robo have died, and despite being overall a good guy Robo simply doesn't have time to mourn all of them.

                Anonymous

Good point, except at absolutely no point in the story is there even any hint than Robo didn't do all he could've done to help Tesladyne once he came back. He gets rebooted in the present as just a head, he defeats the Biomega menace and dismantle Ultra, and that's it. No reason whatsoever for any reader to think this isn't an open and closed plotline. In the volume after that Phil (Robo's main technician/medic) is back to being a public figure and the only scientists working for Ultra's successors that we see are the two crazy scientists who made the quantum computer and accepted their deal to get out of prison.

You can't just go "ackchually you forgot about us and that's awful" when the writer themselves clearly did because they'd rather write about three of the most flaming homosexuals interns ever put to paper than fricking action scientists.

                Anonymous

In this sort of this, the omission of evidence is evidence. Yes, Robo came back and he immediately set to work defeating the Biomega and Ultra. But thats MEANS that tracking down and finding his lost scientists was not his priority. Robo, probably rightly, was focused on the big picture and saved the day. But a lot of little guys can get lost along the way and not register on the big picture.

                Anonymous

I take most of the dialogue to mean that these guys personally felt they were more important than they really are in the grand scheme of things, and that despite their claims this is ultimately revenge for being forgotten by the narrative. The fact they treat Robo not finding them again like a personal betrayal before pivoting into a "we're going to change the status quo" means that it's not about what he did or didn't do to them, it's the fact that the story moved on without their presence that they're pissed about. Robo himself is an incredibly sentimental old man, so the likelihood he'd have forgotten them is nil. And if they really wanted to get his attention, they could have done so at any time between their disappearance and the present. The fact they went to his box of untouchable shinies with the delusion they can create a new world order says it's not about what Robo did to them personally, it's that he rebuilt Tesladyne without them.

Come to think of it, Robo seems to have forgiven Dr Dinosaur pretty quickly given he precipitated both events by a) mailing a nuke to Tesladyne and then b) using the other nukes to somehow explode Robo into the past.

              Anonymous

Dr. Dinosaur is a force of nature. You can't contain him, you can only hope to channel his powers to the least-destructive path.

I was a Clevinger fan back in the 8 bit theater days, but that was back when your politics didn’t define who you were as a person. I’ve fallen off of Atomic Robo in recent years because of who he’s become, so forgive me for asking a dumb question. There was that one human character who was hilariously badass. I think he was shown to be only survivor of a vampire dimension or something. Whatever happened to him?

Even towards the end of 8-Bit you could see some of the self-loathing creeping in. I know a lot of his fans regard the "4 white mages" thing as one of the most brilliant long cons in the medium but to me it always read as just wanting to be done.

                Anonymous

Clevinger was excellent at writing the exact kind of comic action he's famous for, but that neither makes him infallible nor worthy of scorn.
Frankly, he ended it on the best note he possibly could have. Was it anticlimactic? Yeah: That was the nature of his comic.
Also, White Mage has a fantastic rack, I can see why Black Mage wanted to tap that.

I mean, if she whines about equality on the next page it'll be because this book reads like it was written by a completely different person than the author of 13 years ago. Ada and the others used to be pretty neat.

Funny, in one of the Atomic Robo books there's a bonus short story at the end about a journalist coming in for an interview with Robo in Tesladyne Island, and asking what it is they actually do all day. The scientists mention stuff like cheap as frick solar panels and suchlike, that would already have a pretty big effect on the world, but I guess the writers forgot about that.

        Anonymous

Its fairly explicit that the world is already majorly benefitting from the superscience as much as it is endangered by it. The guys in Japan were already patenting things like hyper-efficient solar panels and completely climate-independent crops. Tesladyne was opening up wormholes and building industrial mechs and quantum super computers. The idea that they need to go into the special vault to change the world rather than using their own death ray building super intellect is fricking absurd.

          >Its fairly explicit that the world is already majorly benefitting from the superscience as much as it is endangered by it.
Is it? That page only says these things are being developed. The comic is only now catching up to 2020 and I don't recall seeing anything about global food or energy problems being solved yet. Tesladyne was still trying to get their solar thing to work.

These research outfits like Tesladyne are still playing around with world changing super-science, but the world outside doesn't appear to have changed much.

            >but the world outside doesn't appear to have changed much.
And that's an issue of writing. There are gigantic murder mutants, orbital railguns, and giant fighting robots. A man was just able to turn a train into a relativistic kill device. Even if not a single fricking thing from any other organization ever made it out of skunk works the shit those 3 have personally seen and gotten ahold of would be enough to change the setting from our normal.
Its the same shit as Marvel, trying to keep the status quo similar to our reality so its 'relatable' makes the entire setting fall apart into nonsense.
The trio could go through Ultra or Majestic or whatever's records themselves and likely change the world off that alone.

The downfall of Atomic Robo, both in term of writing and art, is truly something sad.

The total lack of introspection from the author as to why no one has given a shit for half a decade now is ridiculous. AR used to be one of the big names in indie comic, now it's barely a footnote and you can completely blame it on the original creative team.
