Decades culturally start about 3 years in. This was largely correct for the previous decades since the 19th century.
For 90s I’d say it was ‘92- the start of ‘02 since 9/11 quickly ushered in the beginning of the end.

I don't agree. You define cultural shifts by major political happenings. Imo it's simpler than that. What defines cultural shifts are popcultural things like fashion, movies and music. So, going by that:

1991: Still had 80s style with perm hair and glam rock bands and 80s style movies like Police Academy. I'd say Guns N Roses started the shift and Nirvana cemented "90s style" full force, so we're talking from mid 90s and forward. Another much better example is married with children. When it started it was extremely 80s style despite being early 90s. It didnt have a 90s style until mid 90s either.

2001: We still had that above mentioned 90s style. Stuff like Linkin Park, low rise jeans and movies like the Scream movies also didnt kick off untill the mid 00s

2011: We still had teen slasher movies in the style of Scream, Final Destination etc, we had Nickelback and emo style. 2015, was defined by the rise of social media and the woke movement. This was expressed with colored hair, piercing (which initially was an evolution of the emo and scene style), tattoos, hipsters, man buns and artisanal brewery and Trump hate.

2020: You are here. We're still in the zeitgeist of the 2015-style. Stuff will happen around 2025 but knowing what it is is difficult. If you want to speculate, the basic outline is that the pendulum always swings so it will be some kind of reaction to 2015, woke style

Nickelback was way earlier. How you remind me is from 2001 and it was on the radio/tv all the fucking time.

A little earlier, but the 2010s were recovery from the Great Recession.

The pandemic delayed the 2020s, it was one long, boring, fucked up appendix to the woke era. The 2020s won't really start until the siege of Taiwan, next year.

Caught 2 minutes of this on TV last week.

30 seconds of "Oh, it's that dude and that chick and that chick" then 90 seconds of "this is absolute dogshit".

zoomers will never know the before times

The movie that catches the "Limp Biscuit" thing where white kids were kinda going nuts and acting like apes is unironically 2 Fast 2 Furious. They way that movie is styled and directed is the 90s aesthetic dialed up to 100.

Office Space, Singles, Reality Bites, To Die For, Empire Records

        >Singles
Movie that sussed a lot of people to Grunge being a corporate creation.

        >Reality Bites
That was fake 90s. Hollywood created 90s. Every character was an invention. Stiller should have stuck to comedy. His wannabe "normal" movies during the 90s were all execrable. Go watch them, I fucking dare you.

        >Office Space
The depression and sleeping issues were bang on the money for general audiences who weren't actual office drones. Anyone not a boomer was going through hell adjusting to internet use. Donnie Darko bumped up against that too. Everyone thinks it was le time loop shit that caught everyone's imagination, but Donnie dozing off and hallucinating and getting de-realized was all congruent with first-gen heavy internet use while trying to live in the daylight too. Even the soundtrack was all the songs people were discovering through napster and shared CDs etc.

The most 90s movie is probably, ironically, The Wedding Singer. For some reason a lot of young people locked onto that, and even though it's doing all the 80s stuff, watching it now brings a big 90s flashback. Edgy (IT'S SO 90s IT'S BASICALLY THE 70s!!!!) shit like KIDS and all the Mirramax "accessible art house" product were like watching an alien's version of reality. But a stupid piece of fluff like The Wedding Singer "felt" extremely familiar. Probably because it was un-apologetically suburban. Something that most HW product cringes from, but guys like John Hugues embraced in his day to great success.

Omniculture was definitely here by 2005, thats atleast when internet forums were decently mainstream. This was further cemented with facebook which was everywhere by 2008

Message boards weren't the same as corporate social media websites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Facebook started being popular in 2008 but 2009 was the watershed year for Twitter and iPhones.

Being mainstream is not the same as omniculture. That didn't happen until post minecraft explosion. I would say the internet became fully dominant around 2014 when twitter and reddit really took off.

The goal is a film that best encapsulates the 90s. The answer is Like Mike. Coming out in 2002 only strengthens the answer, because it therefore reflects the culmination of everything the 90s entailed. It was not a bleeding edge movie picking up on the latest trends.

None of them. In terms of thought, the closest was perhaps the X-Files. The 90s was about subcultures, and that spoke to them all. In the Techno scene, certainly, it had a big impact. Especially given the rise in interest in ethno-botany and going off to talk to the machine elves at the magic faraway tree.
