James Wan and Jason Mamoa filmed Aquaman as a sequel to Zack's version of JL, not Whedon's.

There's only 1 throwaway line about Steppenwolf. Aquaman is nothing like Snyder's movies. It's bright, colorful and full of shitty quips. It's practically a marvel movie

just because it's a normal movie doesn't mean it's like marvel
in fact it's far too competent for a marvel movie

The script was written by Zack Snyder's friend, the director was chosen by Zack Snyder, the actors were cast by Zack Snyder, the costumes were designed by Zack Snyder's designer...

                >in Justice League. At the end of that movie, Jason Momoa‘s Arthur Curry was seen swimming in the ocean, setting the stage of his soon-to-be-arriving solo movie. However, it turns out there was more to Aquaman’s Justice League wrap-up intended to be shown involving supporting characters Mera and Vulko. In Momoa’s words:

                >“I think I’m coming straight from Justice League. In Zack’s cut, we had it where I was with Vulko (Willem Dafoe) and Mera (Amber Heard) and I say that I have to go home. And they say there’s a force coming, that I need to help. I’m like, ‘I’m going home to see my dad,’ so I get in the back of a pick-up truck and pound a bottle of something, and off he goes, the wanderer. You know what I mean? So that was kind of like, the end of Justice League. Where I was going…and you cut to me coming home and, right into a submarine, and bang-o! And then go see Pops. So for me and Wan our movie comes directly after Zack's one.

                >Jason Momoa provided this information after being asked by WSVN-TV’s Chris Van Vliet when exactly Aquaman takes place after Justice League, noting that in his mind, the former happens right after the latter. Momoa also mentioned that in Aquaman, Arthur Curry has been gone for so long that he wants to come back to his roots, hence why he goes to visit his dad, Thomas Curry, played by Temuera Morrison. However, the theatrical cut of Justice League ultimately tossed out this look into his personal life and instead just showed him embracing his Atlantean half more than before.

Atlanteans speak in clicks, still. Wan just didn't focus on it for convenience.
Mera was adopted, per Wan's own words.

                >Mera was adopted, per Wan's own words.
                bullshit lol
in the sneed cut she was "adopted" by Atlanna
in Aquaman Nereus is her biological father with no relation to Atlanna and the whole thing about marrying Orm is to unite the kingdoms which wouldn't be a thing if she was adopted by Atlanna

In ZSJL, it is clear that the Motherbox Stronghold Atlanteans are highborns due to the fact that they can breathe above and below water (ex. Mera and the Atlantean that Steppenwolf interrogated). With this, it can be inferred that these specific Atlantean guards come from a long lineage of highborns who have been tasked with guarding the Motherbox since its acquisition post-Darkseid’s invasion. This explains the guards’ distinct gold Atlantean armor, as well their British accents. Since Mera is the commander of the Motherbox Stronghold Atlanteans, it can be inferred that her Xebellian biological parents were apart of the long highborn lineage of Motherbox Atlantean guards. This explains Mera being a highborn, as well as her distinct British accent (opposed to Volko’s, for example). So where did her American accent come from? Well, as we learn from Mera in ZSJL, her biological parents were killed in the Xebellian wars. Queen Atlanta then took her in for a period of time, and Mera was then adopted by King Nereus and became princess of Xebel. Because both Queen Atlanta and the Xebellians speak in an American accent, it is quite realistic for Mera to have lost her British accent over time. Though, given that Mera decided to continue in a militaristic path and honor her parents by becoming the commander of the Motherbox Atlanteans, it is also realistic that when she is with her fellow Motherbox Atlantean soldiers, she naturally conforms back to her British accent when using air pockets.
