When you're involved in a collaborative creative project and someone pitches the idea "let's make them gay" if you push back against that you look like a bigot. You have to come up with an argument why they shouldn't be gay. Everyone else in the room is going to question why you don't want the character to be gay. You immediately become an out-member and everyone is uncomfortable around you until you leave or end up getting laid off.
My favourite concept is the Abilene Paradox. Basically, how a group of people will all agree to an idea that none of them want because they're all afraid to speak up and think all the others want it.
