That shifted to overdrive with the release of Zombie Island/Witches Ghost/Alien Invaders/Cyber Chase. That tetralogy of films were produced overseas by an anime studio, and they worked their ass off to update the crew for the modern audience, defining their modern roles to this day. Velma was solidified as an adorable sexualized nerd GF that we all know and love today, ESPECIALLY in The Witches Ghost where she was given a small love interest.

Velma 2.0 would carry on through the 00’s with the DTV movies (some showing off some substantial skin), the merch and What’s New Scooby-Doo. Of course the live action movie also sexed her up to a comical degree, creating an even stronger impression that she is the more interesting choice than Daphne (Who really was only liked by turbonormies and hypnogays at this point. The movie even made fun of how she gets caught and “doesn’t contribute” despite being the most competent member of the group in the 80’s)

In the 2010’s Mystery Incorporated would continue to develop Velma and leave Daphne relatively untouched, with only subtle improvements. Now Velma was spunky and fun and a bonafide love interest for Shaggy. The DTV movies, especially Camp Scare and Frankencreepy really banked on sexualizing the girls, and Velma’s stock continued to rise. This was peak Velmagay time, when Daphne lost a lot of favor in the fandom. What was seen as the contrarian choice now became the default.
What’s odd is in the past couple of years we’ve seen a reversal. Velma is still being tweaked and molded into a QT waifu, but Daphne is getting a lot of experimentation and hype (along with Fred, who finally got more personality). Be Cool Scooby Doo squandered Velma’s attractiveness, and they tried to make Daphne fun and exciting (to mixed results). The newest show, Guess Who?, has really upped the sex factor for both of them, giving Daphne a big ass and meaty thighs (way more than her original slender design) and making Velma more slender but with big tiddies.

Currently, i’d say the fandom is still 70-30 in favor of Velma (like Teen Titans and Raven v. Starfire), but the Daphnegays have been surging in just the past few years. Who knows? Maybe the Stacy will someday take her throne again.
