because that was a rehearsal take where he got the actor to do the worst case scenario. What we see is Nathan pussying out of the confession even tho he himself rehearsed it. He is unable to help himself how he helps others its extremely tragic

How do people not get this?
It was clearly edited with Nathan starting the conversation, then cut to the "rehearsal confession" and then cut back to Nathan deciding not to tell Kor about the cheating.

what do you mean the actor?

      Anonymous

I interpreted that as real Kor taking the confession badly, but out of respect for him they didn't show real Kor blowing up, they just showed a representation of him blowing up instead. When it cuts back to real Kor and Nathan, it's after real Kor blew up.

        Anonymous

I really doubt that, considering Nathan's humor. The actor blew up in an over-the-top way, calling Nathan an awful, awful person and whatnot. The joke was that Nathan was too timid to confess after the rehearsal went "poorly."

The show makes Nathan look like more of a weirdo than anyone else. Of course the people he picks are awkward, but the oddest thing that the guy did was care more about trivia than anything else. Seemed by the end the rehearsals actually helped him, which he wanted.

          that's what makes it based

"Punching down" presumes that kor or Trish were in some way inferior or lower than the creators of the show. Now, in the way in which this inferiority manifests depends a lot on what kind of frame of reference you as a viewer/critic are bringing. Some people might be racist for example and think kor is inferior because he is black. But I think most people like to think of it in terms of some mix of class, race, neurotypology, and the big one, the power differential between kor and Nathan. But I think if you try to look at kor and Nathan as just two different people, and then examine the show with empathy for kors anxieties, I think it's much harder to see punching down here. In fact, I think Nathan reveals himself to be a failure at precisely the task in which kor was a success.

          Anonymous

There is nothing wrong with laughing at people for any reason. There is nothing wrong with insulting people for any reason. The concept of punching up/down was a psyop to make all comedy inherently class based, instead of culture based.

Nice surface level observation, you absolute midwit. The appeal of Nathan's shows isn't mocking morons, it's being able to connect and empathize with various bizarre and offbeat characters--characters who are still interesting and endearing despite their oddness. You're supposed to laugh at the absurdity of the schemes and the awkwardness of the interactions, not the people. If you watched Finding Frances, for example, and all you took from it was "mocking morons while hiding behind detached irony," there's no fricking hope for you.
