Rich people are... LE BAD: The movie

What's wrong with saying the truth? Malicious behavior is always a winning strategy in any economic system, so the richest people will always be people who were willing to do the worst things.

        >What's wrong with saying the truth?
The problem is that it's rich people "saying the truth." The director is a multi-millionaire. Shit like this is pure hypocrisy. It's rich people telling the poors it's evil to be rich only so they can have more money for themselves.

I haven't seen poor people dump hundreds of tons of plastic garbage into the pacific ocean because it's marginally cheaper than recycling it. I haven't seen poor bosses ask for unpaid internship, or even worse, the intern has to pay the company to work there. I haven't seen poor bosses gladly choose to fire thousands of employees in order to give themselves a 10% raise on their 10 million dollar annual salary. But hey, you must be right, because billionaires like Bill Gates gave away a few millions on charity. What do you mean that Bill Gates owns that same charity organization so he did that to get tax benefits, by basically giving money to himself? Nah that can't be right...

Violent crime isn't the worst thing. It's bad, but only hurts a few individuals at a time. However, it is true that the poorest also engage in forms of rudimentary malicious behavior because at a certain point of poverty it becomes the only strategy available for mere survival. The ideal economic system (in my view) minimizes the percentage of people in such poverty as well as the percentage of people able to safely sit in the top echelon without repercussions for what they did to get or stay there.

            Anonymous

this mindset is fucking insane. Look at people who grew up in poverty but managed to claw their way to middle class, and then tell me any of this antisocial behavior is optimal strategy for survival. That guy in my class who stole phones and sold weed and spent his early 20's in prison sure had an optimal strategy compared to those of us that stayed in school and became employable people with skills.

I was born in a poor as fuck rural area. I went to one of the worst schools and highschools in the country by any metric. Many of my friends from school fell into heavy substance abuse or died in stupid ways - usually alcohol or drug-related - before I hit my 20s. But I have good parents who kept me in line and wanted me to be aspirational. I learned to code and got a (tuition-free) college degree and now I live a cushy life as a wellpaid software developer. Some of my schoolmates made it as well, either getting into trades or the army, but many others are in prison or alcoholics looking 50 in their 30's, have crippling gambling debts or 3 children from 3 different fathers in the case of the girls.

There's a huge amount of self-destructive, completely avoidable self-inflicted behavior that keep the poor in their place, and pretending it's some conspiracy by the ruling class is asinine. The government does literally everything it can think of to prevent poor people from doing these retarded mistakes because it makes them a giant tax-sink. Nobody in the country benefits from having a lower-class that leeches off the productive members of society.

That's literally not what's in the movie. The rich family is oblivious and coddled but they're portrayed as decent people, the poor family are struggling and fucked over by circumstances, but they're portrayed as psychopaths.

It is so easy to be an angel in paradise. And no they are not good people. The husband is a self absorbed cocky bully. The wife is a neglectful dope head. And the daughter is quickly becoming a whore. They're awful

The poor do what they must because of their circumstances. Remember the scene from 7 samurai when the samurai are giving shit to the farmers for hording swords they stole from dead samurai plundering after battles, but then toshiro mifunes character is all like and who made the farmers like this? It was the samurai! Its the elite that create a world where the poor must claw at each other to get by. This is not a moral failing of the poor

The poor family, as you say, are psychopaths who are a complete detriment to society

Being rich isn't at odds in achieving good things. Yes you are in competition with your peers, and they might not win. But you're not at competition with the plumber who fixes your pipes and there's no reason to fuck him over or treat him like trash, as i have heard or seen before.

They don't do real work. They're parasites. The labor that keeps the country going is done by the poor.

The poor family in the movie is nothing but a detriment to everyone around them. Even when they get the chance to turn things around (due to the "evil" rich people, who are less mean to them than most blue collar bosses) they willfully fuck everything up.

They fuck up, but not willfully. Willful and wonton intent implies they meant to fuck up and cause chaos. But they just fucked up cause they're fuck ups. They're flawed. That's what makes them interesting people.

They deserve nothing but disdain. If they put any of the effort they put towards making other people lose their real jobs to working real jobs of their own, they would've ended up in much better circumstances.
But the Kims didn't want to work real jobs. The Kims wanted to steal things. They wanted to hurt people. Because they were evil little assholes who felt entitled to the fruits of other people's labor.

The point of the movie is that the label of 'parasite' can be applied to both the poor and rich characters throughout the film. Towards the start of the film it looks as though the poorer family are the parasites. As they are seemingly tricking their way in to jobs in order to extract as much money from the rich family as possible.

But as the film goes on you quickly come to the understanding that what they have tricked their way in to is a form of servitude for rich babies who strip them of their dignity and their agency. The poor people had to lie, cheat and manipulate to get all the way to a position where they are expected to work like dogs, demeaned and treated as second class citizens in order to survive. The rich family fully depends on their labour in order to continue to pursue the rich lifestyle they have as it allows them (The father specifically) to not worry about normal household problems and focus on "work". The very little work we see the father doing throughout the film is him fiddling around with VR tech in an office.

Retarded take of retards. Where did Parks strip main characters of their dignity? The only part is when the father says that his driver smells. And he does so in private, because he do not want to strip a good driver out of dignity and tell him he smells in his face.

The film shows a satirical microcosm of the class system in korea. also to add to this you're a brainlet that you dont even understand that the 'smell' is a metaphor. The "smell" is a class difference between the rich and the poor. Its why the smell never goes away no matter how much the guy cleans his clothes. The point is that even if the driver did ascend to being rich the actual rich people can 'smell' his background, his smell is the strongest because he has been poor his whole life. Its a metaphor for the cultural difference between the rich and poor in korea.

        Death of the author.

you're misusing death of the author. Death of the author applies to the author retroactively applying ideology or ideas to a piece of work in post. The themes i mention are imprinted in to the film itself and talked about in behind the scenes interviews with the director before the film had even been finished.

I cannot believe that anons are actually being filtered by babbies first film with any kind of depth.

            >Bong was a member of the now-defunct New Progressive Party.[112] He has also voiced support for its predecessor, the Democratic Labor Party.[113]

During the Q&A, Woo-sik Choi– who plays Ki-Woo– put those hopes to rest by revealing the meaning behind the song that plays as the credits roll. The song, written by Bong, is about how Ki-Woo “spent his days working in part-time jobs, saving up his money,” explained Woo-sik. “The title, first it was ‘564 Years.'” That number, he explained, was the amount of time it would take for Ki-Woo to save enough money to buy the house.

Bong elaborated: “We factored in his average salary to figure out how long it would take. So when he tells his dad that all he has to do is come up the stairs and announces that he will buy the house, as people in the audience we all know that that’s impossible.”

“It’s a very cruel calculation,” Bong admitted, “but we did it anyway.”

Problem is that you're being deliberately bad faith by trying to soley look at the film in a vaccum, when it's context is an important part of the film's message.

The only way i can really prove the film is socialist/communist in nature and is about the exploitation of the working class in korea under your rules is by literally doing a full length analysis of the film, which you would disregard as a misinterpretation anyway. There is no point trying to persuade someone who stone-walls any argument that contradicts their own.

                Anonymous

Yeah, that's how interpretations work. Or are you admitting that the movie is propaganda instead of art?

          Anonymous

One who is a brainlet is you who can analyze the smell but cannot put it into context. And context is Confucian. Smell cannot go away, as in Confucian societies all people belong to certain class and every class has its purpose. The purpose of a driver is to drive and purpose of the Park is to pay him for driving. But the smelly low class do not want to be low class - which ends up in him killing and hurting people. It weren't Parks who did that. It was Kim. Because he didn't want to be part of the whole society and do his thing humbly. He wanted to be higher than he should be. Which results in tragedy.
The same thing happened with SnowPiercer. And Bong Joon-ho stated in some interview that his movies end up badly clearly because of it. Because low people, who he actually sympathizes with, want more and more and their ideas can and will backfire. Because they are not rulling nor high class people and do not know what responsibilities this higher castes have.
And confucian ideology always was for the lower classes to be treated good but the lower classes also should be obedient and humble. But they aren't. And it ends up with destruction of whole humanity (Snowpiercer) or environment that could easily feed all (Parasite).

Poorfags are the absolute worst. You have only yourselves to blame for the life you've chosen, CHOSEN is the key word. As in none of you want to take responsibility for the lives you live, it's always someone else's fault. In this case, the rich!!! Every single poor person chooses to stay poor, stupid, lazy and hopeless. The sad irony of this movie is that it also uses poor people to make profit off of you, off of your desperation, negativity and despair. Poor people would rather spend their money watching a movie that validates their victimhood than invest in themselves. Imagine spending your hard earned money to go listen to some director, who gets rich off of your attention, tell you how much of a victim you are so you stay vindicated as a poorfag instead of using that money to acquire financial literacy or an actual education. No. The sad reality of poorfags is that you have only yourselves to blame for the lack of finances in your life, even those that are stuck in deadend jobs - you have chosen to stay stagnant and spend 0 of your precious time on anything other than circlejerking victimhood. The only bad rich people in this world are the ones who understand this and milk you for money, just like the director and producers of this movie. I was a neet then a dishwasher/custodian for 4 years and I realized in my second year that it's literally all my fucking fault and I need to do something. I invested all of my savings into an actual education and trade skill so now I can shitpost in absolute peace while you retards can only whine, complain and point fingers. Go to the mirror and take a hard look at yourself instead.

Ironically, wealthy people have more intelligence and capacity for empathy than the average wagie who's bitter at the world but they are portrayed as le bad because the world is ran by trillionaire think tanks that abuse and exploit human life.
