Btw i feel like season 8 entirely should focus on Dany winning the war against Cersei, put national socialism in place and then season 9 would be strong unified westeros fighting and sacrificing their lives against white walkers who would ravage 90 % of westeros but the capital would be defended with huge enormous sacrifice, like imagine im writing better storyboard than these hacks. Thats bittersweet ending, half of the main characters would die, half would still life trying to rebuild it from scratch.

I can`t speak for other people but i think, I THINK, disregarding every single character arc and killing seasons of build up for the sake of subverting expectations may have had something to do with it too. Not to mention, stalling for a whole season and then rushing for the next 2 to make up for it was probably a bad move as well...
