Poor looking sets poor budgets, no art film leader since Kurosawa, Actors they lacked a lead for years for example Toshiro Mifune in post WW2 cinema, some Western people see Takeshi Kitano or "Beat Takeshi" as great but a lot of Japanese think of him as an entertainment clown, thankfully there are some good knowns growing and some Japanese actors are getting recognized again. Cinema in China, Australia, Germany, Thailand, Taiwan, is big, many years before the contest was easier and for many years Japan had no rivals in world cinema. The S.Korean government also gives subtle financial support tax breaks a high quality SKorea production making Japan industry look bad. Japan actors are known for hamming scenes like Jim Carey in a kids tv show, many the Japanese actors will often do too much they 'over act' like Jim Carrey playing Rubberface or its an anime or dramatic South Korean show or German expressionist movie, it does not come across as genuine for a people who are typically reserved.
There isn't a single positive thing about japan or the japanese people.

A lot of people romanticize Japan as some futuristic utopia, but in reality it's an ass-backwards boomer culture that's stuck in the 80s-90s in some ways. Also there is literally no worse writing system in any language in the world. The Japanese writing system is the most inefficient garbage ever invented.

The rise of idols in the 80s did a number on Japanese acting which was theatrical to begin with.
Take a random sampling of pop movies in the 80's, 90', and 00's and you can see Japanese acting get worse in real time. And it's all because of idols.
