      Fpbp.

I know it didn't, but at the same time, it sorta did... I was only a kid back in the 90's, but I distinctly remember the world seeming smaller when we didn't have the Internet as it is today... After 9/11, and as Internet technologies and smartphone capabilities became more advanced, that world we once lived in seemed to cease.

      In short, fear + advanced technology + increased security/decreased freedom = a non-kino experience.

But hell, I'm largely talking shit here... I'm sure there are shows which glorify the 00's just as there are probably more reasons for why the 90's and 00's seem so different from each other.

Good post, 9/11 broke the illusion of The End Of History and the belief the world had stabilised into an eternal, immortal present like the liberal-capitalist dream, a dream we were just beginning to fully dream and then we were woken up

Watch some old AFV. There was an ego or a neurosis that just wasnt there in the 90s and 00s. People weren't embarrassed to be a bit foolish on camera, and when they were there was still a strange "thereness" in people's eyes that you dont see anymore. Well kinda this, but not exactly. It's not like 00s were dreamy or anything, but despite being technologically closer to today, it was socio-culturally much closer to its previous decades. When it is something 40 years ago you can potray is as being a different time, but when it is just 12+ years ago, you can't do the same. You can't use any jokes, you can't use smoking, you can't make teenagers bullying their friends calling them gays etc.

Imagine if you are film maker. Would you risk being cancelled for making a film set in 00s, when you could do basically do all you want if something set in an older period?

Actually, no. The asiatic would just be the child of Hmong refugees and the mulatta would be adopted after being abandoned in Milwaukee by its mud shark mother and Black person deadbeat father. The other four appear to be white in the way Bulgarians and Italians do. Maybe that chick in the lower right is a asiatic, too, and she could just be some adoptee. Late Nineties in any city larger than 10K, that would fly, but it is strange that none could pass for German or Norwegian in a state that is half-German with the next largest white ethnic group being Norwegian.

This pic was 1990 in small-town Wisco, and we had, in a high school of maybe 800 people, at least a couple dozen other shitskins like the one first row right. Actually, two of the students here are Mexicans.

It kinda does work. Like Stranger things for example. Takes old school styling like goonies plus basing in the 80s and showing loads of old stuff and cultural norms makes people very nostalgic. Maybe you don't see it because you aren't old enough to be affected by it. But it works.

It doesn't work alot for the younger generation like 90s kids because they don't do it well. They just reboot 90s classics but change them which people feel ruins it. It's because of the modern culture now. Before it wasn't yet so bad and some stuff was made decent but now it's so far gone it's impossible for them to do nostalgic content right.

Tamir Rice pointed an airsoft gun at the police and Freddy Gray was a felon 10x over. BPD are saints and should be given free reign to execute criminals in the streets.

In Rice's case, the squad car sped in and pulled up right next to the kid. Video footage shows that Tamar was lifting his waistband to show the airsoft gun. He wasn't pointing it at the hair-trigger cops who obviously had no clue to properly approach. Poor judgment yes but when a squad cars zooms in and you have cops with guns drawn shouting, no shit the kid wasn't properly thinking and didn't drop to the ground.
Not to mention the dispatcher failed to inform the cops that the caller said it was a kid and that the gun was probably a toy. Good fricking job they killed a kid who didn't have an actual handgun.

No idea who Freddie Gray is. I mentioned John Crawford because the butthole caller admitted he lied about Crawford pointing the toy rifle at people in the interrogation video.

Obama ruined everything by bailing out the banks and legalizing domestic propaganda on the citizenry

Specifically, the 2nd Obama administration. Democrats had lost their legislative majorities, and, instead of scaling back and writing common sense bipartisan legislation (which is what Clinton did after the '94 midterms, say what you must about him) and trying to shore up as many potential voting blocs for 2016, they decided to legislate through the culture. Obama and his desired policy items were everywhere, appearing on ESPN to share basketball brackets, slow-jamming the news on the tonight show, etc. And the whole time, the near totality of our corporate media environment was sweeping his inefficacy on both foreign and domestic policy matters under the rug and calling anyone who disagreed a racist. Its really no surprise in hindsight that a large swath of the electorate finally said "alright, we're done playing civil, frick you too" and turned to the guy yelling fake news at his rallies. Every single one of those resistance its-a-dangerous-time-to-tell-the-truth wienersuckers had a hand in creating Trump, no one is more responsible

I grew up in the 2000s, nobody ever talked about politics. Even in the 2010s I never heard politics being talked about. That all changed in 2016 when Trump became president. Everything became woke. Everything became politicized. Democrats went from being moderate left to very far left.

everyone was constantly talking politics throughout all the 2000s. you were just too oblivious to notice. e.g., racism, sexism, political correctness, religion, attacking historical narratives (did you know... white people are actually BAD?!), actively undermining the family and parental authority, etc.

politics were talked about, but there wasn't the same air of seriousness it has today because it wasn't as threatening speaking your mind

back then having the "wrong" opinions just means people disagreeing with you, at worst arguing with you

nowadays if you have a "wrong" opinion, you lose your job, your life, your reputation, and sometimes even your life.

and back then, only nazi shit warranted this response. nowadays anything that is not socialism is seen as "wrong" these days. the average political climate has shifted so far left that even being a classical liberal is seen as right wing.

what's worse is that those twisted fricks at twitter will cheer your downfall and even death that they brought upon you if you even dare to try and believe anything that is not textbook marxism

politics were talked about but only you heard it on CNN. movies were still very normal back then unlike today where everything is far left. I went to school in the 2000s and early 2010s and nothing political was ever talked about. A transgender student in school would have been unheard of. If I were in school today 50% of students would probably be gay or trans. I never said no politics was ever talked about at all, but only on TV and it was very boring to watch and nobody bothered to pay attention to. Social Media companies still supported Free Speech. You can say Black person and not get banned or censored. Everything has become woke now. Cant even watch a movie nowadays . Companies didn't tell people to be less white and make anti white statements. Companies didn't change the names of their products because some people got offended even though it was never controversial for decades. The 2000s was never like that. Everything was still to the most part very normal.

Sounds like you were living in a bubble, that shit took center stage right after 9/11 and all you heard about was keeping abortion legal, letting gays get married, being nice to Islam, allowing unfettered immigration into the the country, whites are evil racist and then it boiled over when Obama became president and it all became ingrained into the culture.

The world is going to shit, but clinging to the past isn't going to change anything. Either get yours and tell everybody else to frick off like people have been doing for thousands of years, or go outside and do something useful. The technology isn't to blame for things getting bad. It was always going to get bad because of the cultural influences that were starting to get worse. My life is objectively better because I have access to unlimited knowledge. It's not technology's fault if you can't raise your kids to not be trannies.

All coal on the surface is gone, and we need modern technology and knowledge to access deep stores. If we revert to industrial era, there is no another industrial revolution.

Do we even have 90's nostalgia? That decade can be roughly divided into 3 segments:

    1) Spillover of 80's in 1990 to fall 1991 when the Soviet Union fell
    2) 1992-1996 asserting itself as its own decade with new jack swing, house music, and electric pop being phased out by grunge and acoustic introspective music by 1994 and 1995.
    3) Turn of the millennium in 1997 to 1999 where we saw proto-2000's with the R&B and hip-hop scene as well as more emphasis on media and being tech-savvy in pop culture

Race relations for instance had its ups and downs between black and white with the LA riots, Abner Louima and Amado Diallo but there was still a strong emphasis of ,"Hey, let's fix our problems together instead of blaming each other". There were a frickton of black sitcoms as well as dramas depicting black characters that had nuanced views of society. Or how the black community needed introspection to fix its problems. And "no snitching" as well as colorism amongst blacks caused serious problems.

      Anonymous

That's every decade. Look at the 80s.
      1) Spillover of 70s (western wear, soap operas, and truckers)
      2) '83-'87 is "the 80s" with all the meme shit
      3) proto-90s fashion develops and college rock/grunge starts happening

I know. What I'm saying is that we haven't had a real 90's sentimentality in TV and movies yet.

Shows like the original Beverly Hills 90210, Martin, The Jaime Fox Show, Ghostwriter, Step by Step, Family Matters, California Dreams, early Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the 90's seasons of Friends, Mad About You, Wings, The Parent Hood, Sister, Sister, Round House, Baywatch, Pacific Blue are glimpses of how the 90's as a decade was like. Nobody can reenact this easily compared to the 80's nostalgia we've had.

As for 2000's, it's too recent. I know 2000 is 22 years ago, but the tech and styles aren't that foreign to a 2020's audience. More primitive in cell phones and Internet but a 2022 kid can still relate to that time. The fashion and music might throw them off a bit, but you can get away with it. It's the societal norms and views that might offend certain demographics.

Blade wasn't a black progressive Marvel hero, Blade was just a cool motherfricker. Red in Shawshank Redemption wasn't blackwashing diversity hire, Morgan Freeman was simply that good and the movie even addresses it directly (why is he called Red if he is not a ginger like in the book). Tomb Raider wasn't strong woman needing no man, it was just another cool action flick, just like the 5th Element. Sarah Connor is to this day peak movie woman and a black man is the smartest character in the Terminator franchise, and very heroic too. Xena and Gabrielle were a lesbian couple but no one was focusing on it. There was no pandering, movies and video games were made with focus on story and immersion. Even if it wasn't a good story, there were reasons other than just sjw agenda.

Exactly. Characters were treated as people and not tokens or mouthpieces. Shit there was an episode of Married With Children where Al hangs out with a gay man and had no problem with him. Carl Winslow and Philip Banks were great TV dads with flaws yet you could respect them.

There was always PCness back then, but good writers and staff made sure to have good stories and acting first and foremost.

Note to zoomers: when people talk about "the '00s" they mean roughly the first half of the decade, not like 2008 when you were born. By the time the first iPhone released, culture was already dead.

You mean 2000-2007. 2008 is when the world went to shit because of the recession, rise of Facebook, people started buying iPhones en masse, etc. 2007 was the last "real" year.

The early 00's was interesting how anime really burst onto the mainstream thanks to Toonami and the US mimicking it like Teen Titans did.

Totally Spies also did it, although that was a French show.

Yup I remember that. The French were weebs WAY before the US because they got tons more anime and even tokusatsu (Japanese superhero live action) years before the US.

That show with Seth Rogan and Bucky about Pam&Tommy was a pretty cool flashback to the 90s/early 00s. I grew up in buttfrick nowhere so my perception is kinda warped. I had a dial up modem and Gateway pc till about 2005ish.

Nowadays maybe but The Wonders Years debuted in 1988 and depicted 1968. That 70's Show debuted in 1998 and depicted 1976. The 60's and 70's are so removed from 80's and 90's audiences because of the political climate as well as fashion and music.

The 2000's aren't that out of the loop since most kids and teens can pick up on its dated tech and styles easier than earlier times.

Take Supernatural for example. It debuted in fall 2005. You still had flip phones and high-speed Internet wasn't as prevalent. The series ended in 2020 (never thought it would run 15 seasons). A fan can rewatch the 2000's seasons on TNT and it wouldn't be as dated compared to Charmed or Buffy which began in the 90s though they did end in the early and mid 00's.

Yeah we lost our optimism and earnestness. If you look at 90's shows and movies, there's an actual feeling of depth toward people and ideals. Nowadays being a snarky butthole is considered a personality.
