      full plate infantry or dismounted knights/men at arms became the standard on the battlefield between the mid 15th century to early to mid 16th century. It's not the best representation of the 16th century as a whole but it's valid. OP should have linked a picture showing more of a mixed pike formation with lighter armor.

    It's a somewhat obscure period of history for a lot of people, between the middle ages and the Revolutionary/Napoleonic times. Also a western focused movie would likely have to address colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade, which they are loathe to do.

    There's still a lot of media from this period, though. Obviously Shogun is a recent example.

    I've seen the first episode of Boundless and the movie Anonymous set in that timeframe and they have a shitty dark shadowy filter. It's not just medieval movies that do this.
