“Force sensitives” is equivalent of “psychic.” It’s a combination of talent, skill, and practice. Star Wars isn’t set in the past; it’s set far, far in our own future when humanity has evolved a bit more, gained a bit more enlightenment, and suffered at least a couple of more societal “Dark Ages,” so far in our future, in fact, that humanity no longer even remembers the world of its birth. This story is being told to us by a droid from a point even further in the future.

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_history

The chronology is intentionally vague. It could either be our future or our forgotten past, meaning we’re in a Dark Age period. You’re talking about a story drawing from Asimov and Herbert and conceived and written in a time when von Dänikan and the Ancient Aliens concept were just gaining a foothold in the popular psyche.

                Anonymous

I'm talking about a story where the author chose to put some text on screen that said "this took place a long time ago"

                Anonymous

Lucas always intended the trilogy of trilogies to end with R2D2 recounting the story to the whills. Star Wars could then take place in our galaxy, in our future, and in an even more distant future, in a galaxy far, far away, Artoo is recounting the story of Star Wars, which, from his point of view, occurred a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Congrats on failing the Sally-Anne test designed to measure sapience in 5 year olds though.

                >The chronology is intentionally vague.
It explicitly says it's in the past, and says it's in a galaxy far away which makes total sense from our perspective.
                >A future history is a postulated history of the future and is used by authors of science fiction and other speculative fiction to construct a common background for fiction. Sometimes the author publishes a timeline of events in the history, while other times the reader can reconstruct the order of the stories from information provided therein.
What the frick do you think this proves. You think that the opening line is from the perspective of someone from the future? Based on what?

                Anonymous

Are you fricking moronic? It's written from the perspective of the Whills who have written the journal of the Whills of which the Star Wars episodes are a part of.
This is like Lord of the Rings being a translation of the red book of the Westmarch.

Star Wars really is cursed with casual normies thinking they know anything about the topic.

the frame story of lord of the rings being a translation is part of the book's text. your thing about the whills is not in the movie, it's fanfiction. there is no indication that "a long time ago..." is a diegetic statement or who would be making it.

They literally cannot. Few years ago I moved to a new place out of state, just a small rental house on like a 1/3 acre and started doing the lawn with my little push mower. From what, exactly? Helping your ass learn when you're trying to mow your shit with the wrong tools?

I'm a millennial on a pretty sizeable acreage and have to mow quite a bit, the first thing I noticed about the video is that this guy is roughly the same age as me or maybe a little younger and is too moronic to know how to mow high grass. That disappointed me that young people still look so overwhelmingly moronic thanks to social media propagation. The wife fricking sucks too sitting there making an embarrassing video out of it instead of trying to help troubleshoot.

I had the exact same experience less than a month ago, I just bought my first house. I know how to mow from growing up on my parent's farm but I had been living on rental properties for years and didn't have a mower. I had spent close to everything on the down payment and closing costs and could only afford a push mower starting out. It would probably only take me about two hours but my next door neighbor showed up in his riding mower and knocked it out in 20 minutes. Suburban middle class boomers are the best.

lmao I literally had this experience. Recently bought a house on an acre that hadn't been cut all year. I cut down like half of it with a shitty old push mower before a based boomer rolled up in his riding mower to help. They can't help themselves.

They literally cannot. Few years ago I moved to a new place out of state, just a small rental house on like a 1/3 acre and started doing the lawn with my little push mower. Hadn't been mowed in a while, but I couldn't even get halfway finished before a boomer was headed over on his riding mower (thanks Bruce).

      [...]

Yeah, the webm wouldn't bother so much if he wasn't carrying his kid at the same time. That dude seems like a humble guy who's being taken advantage of, he goes out of the way to pull double duty and the first thing she does is complain about the lawnmower's size. Its like she was more happy to see strangers help him out than to see her man take on a difficult task and he's thinking about it too. It may seem like I'm exaggerating but this is one way marriages fall apart, the thing I've noticed from happy and long-lasting marriages is how both of them love working on home improvement stuff together.

Character growth = characters doing whatever the frick the writer wants them to do for the sake of the story, regardless of whether or not it makes sense

          Anonymous

Not to mention the most glaring issue everyone overlooks when talking about TLJ: Luke didn't NEED to have a character arc. Just like Han, he was a fully developed and fleshed out character in the original trilogy. This was a new trilogy, that should have focused on new characters. At the very least, Han and Luke could have had little arcs where they show the difficulty or struggle it is to teach someone new, reckless, inexperienced, etc. Maybe Han TEACHES Rey how to fly, she's not just naturally good at it, maybe Luke TEACHES her to control her powers, she's not just amazing at it. Crazy concepts, I know.

            Anonymous

yep. they all had finished arcs by the time these movies came out. their purpose in the new movies is to suffer and die for the purpose of the "destroy the past" motif. han only exists to be killed surrounded by the new characters. luke is a pathetic, unrecognisable old man who force kills himself to help the new characters fight another day

    Because wikis are anti-movies.

A wiki is the ultimate expression of not viewing films as films and instead as a simulation of a world. The point of a wiki is to aggregate more and more information, smooth over any differences between different works (no matter how important or intentional these differences may be) until you end up with a coherent universe. This is, of course, very wrong and very stupid.
