    >Make a movie about the personifications of the very elements themselves
    >Make it a generic love story about inter-racial relationships, and they all live in a generic city
Fricking why? Of all the things to do with the elements, why go with THAT story, that could've been told with damn near anything?

it's also moronic, water would extinguish fire, there's no way they could make a narrative about them fricking.

Fire can also evaporate water. So the story really should've been about marriage, where Fire and Water elementals turn into Steam elementals.

In their defense, kinda, I think it's impossible now to have a story with and about elementals in a mundane modern urban setting, doing mundane modern things like being awkward at dating. Elementals as a concept call to mind high fantasy almost by default.

Its a love story from a CG studio who's primary audience is grade schoolers and their parents in an industry where 90% of the tickets are based on explosive CG effects and have been for like 30 years now. A movie about two people who take the bus and eat at home isn't exactly what anyone is looking for.

It’s a bit sad adventure flocks don’t seem to have an audience anymore. There was this phase you saw in animation for a several years where adventure animation was done that… just didn’t go anywhere. I wonder what caused the collapse in interest in that kind of adventure fiction. Just no sense of discovery left? Colonialist implications too contentious (nevermind that the most colonialist character was the antagonist in Atlantis the lost empire)? I cant tell.

        Anonymous

One guess is that everybody's too scared to leave their own homes to start a new life. That, and there's nothing left on this Earth to discover, which was what old adventurers did.

Tldr: there's no new world out there, and nobody wants to go.

        Anonymous

Adventure has to be thrilling. There is no thrills if there is no action and some horror mixed into it. Adventures are like melting pots of different genres. The moment you take away the violence and the scares, you take away the adventure. Exploring a new undiscovered cave with your flashlight is an adventure. Exploring a well-lit tourist cave with safety railings and merchandise shops everywhere is not an adventure.

Your story changes from Indiana Jones to lame school book "adventures" the moment you make it safe and take away the spice. And you can't add in spice to your story if you're constantly afraid of upsetting anyone.

          Anonymous

          >The moment you take away the violence

This right here is why I stopped liking western cartoons. What violence? Western cartoons are censored trite. And I don't care how it sounds this is how I ended getting into anime. I liked that anime does more on screen violence than what the west ever dares. Samurai Jack wasn't even allowed to get seriously violent until like twenty years later.
