I admit I slept on it. Didn't like the look of it when it was airing, then checked it out a few years later out of boredom and found I actually really liked it.

I saw some early episodes of it and just thought it was really mediocre. Does it get better as it goes on?

Much better. Hopefully it was only the first 10 episodes you saw. 'Cause it's practically a different show right after that. Apple & Onion turned out to be funnier and more creative than I'd initially assumed.

It's much, much funnier than most Cinemaphile shows in the last decade or so

No one gave it a chance because the art style is disturbing it almost seems like a preschool show. Once you get past that it's genuiney one of the best things CN has ever put out

I think the post-ironic nature confused and misled a lot of anons, at first glance it looks like a straightforward "talking stuff" kids cartoon like Fungies and that's what most people assumed it was but it's not that, it's a level above that in awareness, but it's not a cynical parody/satire like Sausage Party either, it's actually genuine and earnest but not naive or only intended for a naive audience. It could easily be an Adult Swim show.

They took what would usually be a regular kids show premise and made something really great with it, but most people got stuck on the first part.

Honestly. I want to kiss whichever HBO Max employee decided A&O was worthy of being a part of this library. Really hope this helps to pull at least a few more eyes to the show. What OP got wrong was that people didn't HATE Apple & Onion; they straight-up ignored it and forgot it even existed, which I'd argue is worse.

Most of those shows are ass. HBO ain't doing it no favors.

The main characters were just way too boring. Think about it. What you described is Reguler Show. Why did this show fail while Regular Show succeeded? Well, fleshed-out characters and a better premise.

RS also has better visual identity, it's rather plain but plays its strenghts by making the main cast stand out. Creepy food people? that's just weird and unappealing.

Apple and Onion is much funnier though

        >Why did this show fail while Regular Show succeeded?
Relied on its own identity and humor instead of stoner comedy and references

I don't know about Cinemaphile but I didn't like it because it was boring. Like the two main characters are just two boring good-natured goobers who get into wacky shenanigans. And that's it. The show is the definition of mediocre.

I think coming out alongside Summer Camp Island hurt this show because it felt like Cartoon Network was going in a really weird and autistic direction. Some of SCI's bad first impression rubbed off on A&O

This show would've hit its stride if an e-celeb or meme came around for it, just anything to get people to notice it while it was airing instead of being buried under Teen Titans Go reruns.

I think it just came at a weird time where people were looking to hate and bash on anything, it would've been an instant classic in early internet days
