I think Cloverfield was from a different dimension (some space experiment tore a door open between worlds)

I almost wonder if those astronauts were in turn sucked into the alt dimension because when they returned to "Earth" it was completely overrun with monsters.

I don't remember any astronauts? The "found footage" from the couple on the ferris wheel showed something entering the atmosphere and splashing down in the ocean.

Frick the israeli spinoffs, you see the Cloverfield beast’s egg or whatever fall from space in the home video. It’s an alien that crash landed, hatched, then came out of the water and started trapping around, I don’t think it was maliciously attacking like the kaijus from pacific rim.

        >Sometime before 2007, Tagruato discovered an addictive substance known as "Seabed's Nectar", which they used as a key ingredient in Slusho! beverages. The company eventually discovered that Seabed's Nectar was the food source of the Cloverfield monster. Tagruato located the creature's resting spot and constructed Chuai Station over it to extract Seabed's Nectar along with studying the creature.

        >On December 27, 2007, Chuai Station was destroyed. Tagruato made a hasty statement about the Chuai destruction in which they blamed the disaster on T.I.D.O. Wave; they claimed that T.I.D.O. Wave members had infiltrated and planted explosives on the station.[4][5] In reality, the station was destroyed by the Cloverfield monster after Tagruato inadvertently awakened the creature and leading to its rampage and the destruction of New York City on May 22 and May 23, 2008.

There's some cool videos on YouTube about it, check it out. It explains everything you need to know about the monster in the first movie. I feel like the chosen one when it comes to this movie. At the end the camera footage cycles back to the main character and his gf at the beach, and way out in the distance of the ocean you can see something hit the water. Clearly meant to be the monster in an egg/asteroid state. Super cool detail to me for no other reason than no one else ever seems to notice or even believe me when I point it out. I think this movie is underrated in general. Very good. Some people faulted the comedic relief character when it came out but these are normie critiques, people with silly personalities don’t turn into somber ones suddenly when they go into shock. People like this laugh at funerals

      >people with silly personalities don’t turn into somber ones suddenly when they go into shock. People like this laugh at funerals
It doesn't matter whether they are realistic characters or not, they are just insufferable. It's like they came out of a shitty sitcom. The party/romance bullshit takes up the first quarter of the movie, it drags on and on. Marlena was the only one I cared from the cast.
I like the idea of Cloverfield and some moments are pure kino, but the human characters bring the whole thing down.

      >Clearly meant to be the monster in an egg/asteroid state
      Nice digits.

The thing you saw falling was a satellite. There is an elaborate story around the cloverfield incident. And you get bits and pieces through the (fake) social media accounts of the characters in the movies as well as info "hidden" on the internet at the time. I can't be bothered to look it all up again. But basically the thing you saw was a satellite and the monster that attacked the city was a baby.

I wish they had continued that story in another movie (without the shake-cam). Oh well.

The first one is entertaining but theres a lot of stuff in it that kinda falls apart when you think about it for even a second.
The monster seems to change size depending on whatever they need it to do at any given moment. And when it kills the camera dude at the end it not only manages to sneak up on them quietly somehow but bites a guy and leaves a weird amount of him intact considering its size.

You don't know how alien species think or behave. A baby on Earth is not the equivalent of an alien baby in space. They don't adhere to our ways of evolution. Their brains function differently. They have different animal instincts.

You cannot call this alien a "child" until you can communicate with it on an intelligent level.
