^This. I expected something that explored the history as well as the evolving relationship between Yasuke and Nobunaga. Instead it was generic Japanese fantasy with black guy. It was a wasted opportunity.
I actually hoped for something more historical, like Last Samurai but with Yusuke since naturally you'd have to make up most of what his story is since we didn't really know but instead we got magic scifi japan.
outside the novelty and cool concept you could do with Yuskue it's kinda boring. it's not irredeemable dogshit like some anons are going to claim it's just a forgettable romp.
If you want a decent thing about Yuskue I recommend Hitomi, it's about a girl who trains underhim
Personally, I probably would have felt better about it if I hadn't expected/wanted historical fiction. Yasuke is an interesting enough concept. I didn't want or need robots and shit.
>Yasuke was a real, notable outlier of an African in Japan
Not that real. The single source we have contemporaneously with when this guy supposedly existed is also the guy who embellished Oda Nobunaga to a ludicrous level. Suffice it to say every word that guy wrote is and should be treated with great suspicion.
that wouldn't pass through the woke mob. he was a slave given to a japanese warlord as a gift like property and then was scooted around as a court ornament for a while and treated like livestock by conquering enemy warlords. but I'm just going off of japanese sources, western ones get pretty crazy.
I am japanese, so my perspective is not normal. Biggest problem was that it was sold as black samurai adventures, and it turned out to be sub par anime copy. If it was GOOD sci fi anime, it would be better too.
Hated is not right word. Seen same as defective anime copy, like Mangaverse or bad Tokyopop.
Truth in advertising. If it was sold as black samurai mecha power ranger, it might not feel like lies in advertising.
reminder there is no japanese language source that suggests yasuke was a "samurai" or ever fought. to the contrary there are many sources that suggest he was viewed as a novelty and even as an animal. the reason he was spared from eradication of nobunaga's/nobutada's retainers is because he wasn't one, and was thought to be an animal. it is modern western revisionism that suggests he ever fought in any conflicts. not only would this have been extremely bizarre for him to do, as he does not even remotely fit into the samurai class nor would he have been conscripted as an ashigaru, but he would have been executed for doing so were he a retainer of these conquered clans.

Real is overrated. But even getting as close to being a black guy who existed in the Sengoku era is better than the disrespect say from ubisoft.
To be honest I found this one boring too.
Good thing you have hundred other historiacl sci fi samurai action fiction to choose from too.
It's funny how black weebs didn't give a single frick about this.
Weeb are not known for high standard, but black weeb knows that this is tokyopop bullshit.
>Good thing you have hundred other historiacl sci fi samurai action fiction to choose from too.
Most of them are mediocre as well. Also learn english ffs.

He was definitely not a Samurai but he was a retainer so he did fight, at least as a low ranking soldier
that wouldn't pass through the woke mob. he was a slave given to a japanese warlord as a gift like property and then was scooted around as a court ornament for a while and treated like livestock by conquering enemy warlords. but I'm just going off of japanese sources, western ones get pretty crazy.
He was originally a slave most likely, but got freed and served as a vallet/bodyguard of an Italian missionary when he met Nobunaga
I think media with Yasuke should adapt the historical episode where Nobunaga thinks he painted his skin with ink and makes him scrub himself, that would be funny
He might have been officially a retainer and even bodyguard but treated more like a mascot or human pet, since he was unique they wouldn't have risked getting him killed
I'd genuinely like a very serious historical anime that tries to get as close as possible to telling the story of Yasuke with maximum historical accuracy. How he was a novelty and seen as freakishly strong. How he was allowed to bear arms but essentially as a freak show attraction. Maybe pointing out that the rules about what makes a "samurai" that he doesn't meet weren't fully codified yet.
Potentially as part of a series that also follows other random samurai or near-samurai from history, like William Adams, Jan Joosten and Giuseppe di Chiara. Chinese and Korean dudes too
Didn't watch it but I'm leery of Netflix 'anime'. Choosing to focus it on a black samurai, while not bad of itself, is right in line with Netflix's usual agenda. I sort of thought it seemed like Netflix found that actual Japanese anime didn't have enough black protagonists for their taste so they produced their own. I don't really like Americans producing Japanese anime for American consumption because I feel like it could have a bad effect on the industry. I already hate most Western media so why would I want Japanese media to get tainted into being more like that?
I thought it could still be good if it was based on history. Then I heard it had robots and sci-fi shit in it. Lost any interest
>afro samurai >samurai champloo >Trust and Betrayal >Hyouge Mono
and even comedy/parody/sci-fi stuff like Gintama. The japs know how to make entertaining/interesting samurai animated series. While the west only has Samurai Jack and every other time they've tried to do these stories they've sucked balls.
I know but that's a bit of an amalgamation of japanese culture x movies and books that Lucas liked at that time. Not to mention that there aren't that many sw animated adaptations.
I said "animated" that's why I didn't mention stuff like Shigurui and Takemitsuzamurai. And frick off I am not watching that cgi shit. Stan took the short end of the stick with that adaptation.
I was expecting something similar to Afro Samurai and got flying magical space Blacks instead.

If it was historical there would be a scene where they try to wash the black off him for a day before cutting his wiener off.

A few vocal racist
Personally, I probably would have felt better about it if I hadn't expected/wanted historical fiction. Yasuke is an interesting enough concept. I didn't want or need robots and shit.
The Nioh version wasn't the main character.
Yeah, it would be one thing if it was another race swap, but Yasuke was a real, notable outlier of an African in Japan

Are you saying that the golden evil statue didn't really exist?
About as much as Oda being the literal incarnation of the Demon Emperor of the Sixth Hell.
People expected historical fiction not science fiction.
Yep.
The Nioh version has an excellent design and his character was very likeable - particularly in the sequel.
I wanted a semi-realistic and a little stylized story of Yasuke. Instead we got fricking magic and mechs in the first ep. Da frick?
Wasn't even as good as other historical sci fi mecha samurai fiction either.
To be honest I found this one boring too.
It was at least respectful to the source material
that wouldn't pass through the woke mob. he was a slave given to a japanese warlord as a gift like property and then was scooted around as a court ornament for a while and treated like livestock by conquering enemy warlords. but I'm just going off of japanese sources, western ones get pretty crazy.
They held back all the mech shit from previews
I was expecting Samurai X and got some weird Gundam instead
I am japanese, so my perspective is not normal. Biggest problem was that it was sold as black samurai adventures, and it turned out to be sub par anime copy. If it was GOOD sci fi anime, it would be better too.

Congratulations. You know average is average.
>Netflix Original
There's your answer.
We were expecting a historically accurate story about a real historical character. Instead it's a weird story with robots.
Would’ve preferred if it had been more historically accurate.

We don't really know, he was pretty tall so it makes sense to make him fight
He accompanied Nobunaga in some fights, so at least he likely did some fighting
The truth is that we don't know much about him at all
It's funny how black weebs didn't give a single frick about this.
That's true?
Not that anon but I could believe it. The show got very little fanfare in general.
I didn't, which is a shame because I love FlyLo.
I wonder if they’ll ever try making another show about Yasuke.
opening song is the most memorable part of this show
the series is just boring

Same. Feel like the anime would’ve been far more interesting if it had gone down this route. As opposed to what it ended up doing.

The entire Star Wars canon is sci-fi samurai stories of varying quality

Usagi Yojimbo.
I said "animated" that's why I didn't mention stuff like Shigurui and Takemitsuzamurai. And frick off I am not watching that cgi shit. Stan took the short end of the stick with that adaptation.
I expected a hard historical drama about the fall of Oda Nobunaga from Yasuke's perspective but it turned out to be a generic fantasy action schlock.
I didn't hate it I just ignored it and forgot it existed and plan to do it again.
