Why did Futurama fail while American Dad became a huge hit?

Why did Futurama fail while American Dad became a huge hit? This is the only time where Seth MacFarlane managed to beat Matt Groening.

Science-Fiction tends to be riskier investments with potential for greater payoff while generic sitcoms tend to be low risk but almost guaranteed profit (but profit == quality isn't always true). Idk. Does that make sense?

I'm pretty sure Futurama is more iconic than American Dad.

That line used to be super popular with normalgays in the 2000s, too.

Futurama would be as successful if not more so than American Dad if Fox treated the show with respect. They shuffled the airing times consistently so no one knew when to tune in etc. Honestly, Matt Groawning pretty much came up with the idea of animation domination. And futurama had a perfect spot to be in between The Simpsons and the X files. Fox treated both Matt and Futueram like shit which is pretty evil of them considering the Simpsons saved the network in the first place.

It was only later after Fox screwed over Matt did they start treating animation seriously. And gave Mcfarlane the treatment Futurama deserved. Honestly, if Fox treated adult animation better and picked up more shows we could have been living the dream. Imagine a Simpsons, Futurama, Mission Hill lineup. We could have had it so good! I still love American Dad though. But man things could have been so sweet.

The sad fact is many shows met an early demise by executive modeling or having hard-to-follow time slots that change erratically. Scheduling is the key to success. Well, that and quality. But you needed both to be successful back then and just like how Dilbert met an early demise due to no fault of their own the same fate befell Futurama.

Also, all their endings were great stop smoking crack.

If we lived in an alternative world where Family Guy was cancelled while Futurama kept going in its zombie seasons you guys would b***h about it the same way you did with FG.

It still rubs me the wrong way that Futurama had to prove itself by selling 4 movies but Family Guy just came back for another season. They were cancelled together, they were both doing crazy well on Adult Swim, and DVD season sets had strong sales. Both should have come back at Fox but only one did.

Most of the time Futurama just isn't funny (Zapp Brannigan appearances aside). It's lazy Zombie Simpsons writing that sometimes picks up but that's only when they go for serious drama and not comedy. American Dad was okay to start but constantly improves, isn't afraid to improvise or try new things and actually pays attention to what does and doesn't work and is purely focused on comedy above all else.

The continuity issues with Futurama is sad, I remember watching the eyepad episodes and thinking why Leela and Fry relationship is like S1/2

I know many would disagree but I think the show found its footing again later on. They were just unsure how to handle those early return episodes.

When you hear people talk about Cinemaphile adult shows it’s always Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill, Bojack, anime and Rick and Morty.
Nobody watches or brings up Simpsons anymore unless it’s Disney shilling their specials on streaming.

Futurama is the show that's always on whenever I'm staying overnight at a hotel. It's funny but not that funny, a guaranteed chuckle per episode for the most part.

Not to mention every reboot Futurama ever had is shit and sacrificed changing the status quo in favor of garbage like Bender becoming a troony. While American Kino's switch to TBS gave us masterpieces like "Rabbit Ears", "Jeff and The Dankass Weed Factory", "CIAPOW" and "Stomp Le Monde" and gave us impactful status quo changes like Jeff marrying Hayley permanently and Roger having a son. Hell, they made Stan's dad turn into Krampus

I'll tell you why, OP. Because almighty overlords like Steve and the Boys (Snot, Barry and Toshi), Stan, Hayley and, of course the true Lord and Savior, Jeff Fischer, are on American Dad. Furthermore, Futurama will never ever have as much powerful cast of characters as such. I rest my case.

I mean the thing is they can both make great episodes. I really don’t see why Futurama started making so many episodes that were Tiffany’s boyfriend.
