Pretty much yeah. First season was pretty fun. But every season after was just aaaaaall over the place. They would introduce a decent plot line then just abandon it for 4 episodes doing the most random shit. They kept adding new annoying characters and kept pushing annoying recurring characters. They had so much potential. There was a clear story they set up but just walked away from. So disappointed.

TV writing is so bad because of the writers strike and the feminization of society which evaluates all criticism, even constructive criticism, as literally abusive. You can't tell anyone that they're a shit writer anymore because then you're just a hater. Objectivity (competence, really) is white male oppression

The original run was pretty great, imo close to classic Simpsons. With the reboot is started to get progressively worse. A few kind of good episodes don't make up for the mediocre rest.

play more into the sci fi elements instead of making simpsons jokes and constant 20th century pop references
the fricking second episode of the show is them going to a 50s style theme park that happens to be on the moon, the side plot is bender fricking the daugher of a stereotypical old american farmer that happens to be a robot, most episodes would work 1:1 on the simpsons exept for the scifi aesthetic.
the good ones are always the one that actually use the premise to do something different instead like pic related( and even than they had to make it look too much like ancient egypt)

Cause it wasn't a very funny satire so it wound up leaning heavily on its rather blandly written story. The writers clearly didn't know a whole lot about fantasy beyond Game of Thrones, D&D, and Lord of the Rings and their jokes showed that their knowledge of even these limited topics was extremely shallow. Contrast it to the more nuanced jokes in Futurama skewering a variety of sci-fi properties and premises. You could tell the writers on Futurama had a pretty intimate knowledge of the stuff they were lampooning, and it came across as good-natured ribbing. I never felt like the people writing Disenchantment even liked fantasy as a genre, or knew anything about it from first hand experience besides watching LotR movies and GoT.

I'm 29 now so Futurama was on TV when I was a kid. Is it really that bad? was tempted recently to download it all and go through it.

The early seasons of Futurama are amazing while the later seasons are complete trash. The first few seasons have funny setups and nuanced jokes. The writing is better and some of the one liners that aren't even meant to be jokes are hilarious. In the later seasons they start doing modern politics and shoehorn in jokes that don't make any sense. They also go on a rampage purposefully changing all the characters established personalities for the worse. Like devoting episodes to Amy settling down and being really smart instead of just being a rich sorority girl the professor keeps around because she has the same blood type. A good cutoff point to stop watching is when the professor and Herme's kids are introduced but it's more of a gradual decline because there are some funny jokes at the midpoint.

        >The early seasons of Futurama are amazing while the later seasons are complete trash.

I liked the first few seasons. S4 onwards is very very strange, like they forgot the premise of the series is distant future shenanigans. When they did an iPhone episode I knew the writers had literally forgotten the initial concept.

        >S4 onwards is very very strange
This is why I always say that the show GOT BETTER as the seasons passed! They were too serious in the beginning, which made a boring watch, but the more they go off-the-rails in the later seasons, the better it got. Same with the melodrama; in the later seasons everyone is always crying and big emotions are in play!

When I see people say the original run Futurama was "boring" I see people outing themselves as Rick & Morty fans who don't like the humor because it isn't as edgy and nihilist enough for them

        >the original run Futurama was "boring" I see people outing themselves as Rick & Morty fans who don't like the humor because it isn't as edgy and nihilist enough for them
I think there's probably truth to this. Rick & Morty really take the nihilism and violence to another level, while Futurama stays more in the surreal zone. (I like them both, obviously.)

The writers have extremely surface level "i watched four youtube videos giving me a basic gestalt of DnD" understanding of the settings they were satirizing and it's plainly obvious. And without an intricate understanding their satire is bland and flavorless and wouldn't have been edgy 20 years ago let alone now.

      Great post man.

If I could add onto that.
I think an inherent problem with disenchanted is that Futurama was still grounded in society. All the advanced in technology still leaves people with basic problems.

With medieval fantasy, the world is always fake and so far removed from modern problems that commentary shouldn't take place. The Matt Groaning format can't work without satirizing something. At best the show could exist to criticize escapism and bad writing, but the writers aren't smart enough for that. Also the show looked like it aimed for the sedated weed smoking Rick and Morty fanbase

This BUT they made a mess of the over-arching mystery of dreamland storyline and also including techno-steam punk world ruined the whole sword and sorcery vibe. It would have been so much better if they just stuck to Sword and Sorcery + Futurama premise.

Steamland could have worked. The whole “magic only works for dreamland because of the elf ruins” could have made a cool combination. But they literally just dumped the idea while at the same time pretending the whole plot was “building up to it”.

Bean is like they took Bender, but unironically and with no one and nothing to act as a foible. She's an awful piece of shit and it isn't funny, interesting, or entertaining to watch her be an awful person. There are several other key writing ingredients you need for that to work and very skilled writers. They have none of those.

The writing generally sucks, but beyond that there's something so stilted and awkward about the show that the odd jokes that actually would get a laugh just don't land at all. I don't know what it is exactly, maybe there's a bigger disconnect between the animators and storyboard artists and writers than there was on a show like futurama but there's something really fricked with it. Bad comedic timing, flat delivery, nothing about the animation sells the jokes, probably a mixture of that and more but I just really didn't like it.

Main cast has zero chemistry and at least early on - most of S1 - none of them are likeable. For a long time Odval felt like the most sympathetic character in the whole thing. Jokes are mostly unfunny and fall flat, story is all over the place and many threads never get resolve.
