True. We still got a pretty decent movie all things considered though.

Well she only did part of it. Film went through a handful of directors on that film.

Even Steve Purcell was director for a short time. I'd like to have seen the film completed under his work.

Brenda Chapman was involved in it for years, even before Disney bought Pixar in 2006

She didn't just direct it though, she created the whole story.

AYE LASSIE LAGGO DEH FUHRER MIEN LASS NO EH?

I can take solace in the fact that if Merida ever gets another movie, which is still extremely unlikely, she'll look like this.

      What people wanted:
      >adventure film exploring Celtic mythology

      What they got:
      >A GIRL wants to learn archery?!?! Also it's actually about her mum turning into a bear

Heard the original draft had Merida travel into the future, the ruined kingdom was her own, it was destroyed after her refusal to fufil her obligations as princess resulted in relations between clans breaking down and war breaking out.

This. I wanted a Celtic shenanigans filled adventure, not Bear mum and medieval politics. Mor'du was a pretty interesting villain, though.

it was nice to see Prince of Egypt director finally make a CG film. PoE had 3 directors, but Brenda was the first one. The others joined her later

I remember the trailer made it seem like she was on an epic quest to save her mother from the curse and that was why it was called BRAVE
but I guess she’s brave for uh…I dunno

Pretty much this. It's a waste of time making a medieval fantasy movie with magic and monsters then have the hero wander around their own home fumbling around family members for 2 hours.

It needed an adventure and epic quest to save her mother.

      >"there are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own, but I know better. Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it"
title refers to Merida's last line

The story is lame. It's basically just Brother Bear with women. And that was already considered one of the worst Disney movies.

Not turning into a different movie halfway through.
Not having the huge plothole that is the party. A King invites rivals to a sit-down in order to discuss terms, then DOESN'T realize, know, or care that his wife and daughter are both missing for, shit it's been so long I can't even remember how long they were gone, a day or week? Stupid, immersion breaking stuff right there.

      >Not turning into a different movie halfway through.

Single plotline that makes sense from start to finish. This movie seemed more like two episodes poorly tacked together.

This is what I see. It's two different stories. Is it Merida not wanting to get married while the King invited all the suitors or is it Merida accidentally cursing her mother that she doesn't get along with? Having both is pointless and confusing. Just do one plot and then make it a little more epic for a major tentpole studio film.

I heard the movie was supposed to involve Merida running away and going to be some epic adventurer on her own while abandoning the throne. Doing that led to war between the clans that ruined her kingdom and got people unnecessarily killed etc. since she was not there to maintain the alliance between them in a marriage and they went to fighting. And she tried using magic to go back and undo all of that. Also it took place mostly in winter.

Been trying to find confirmation of the original plot but PIxar and Disney refuse to talk about the development of the film now due to the bad blood surrounding it.

Not sure there is a huge amount of info out there. I've tried to find the original story from "the bear and the bow" and struggled. I know I read about the story change somewhere trustworthy though

Literally ditch the bear plot and even the daughter vs mom plot entirely. Or honestly a page one rewrite where it’s a classic adventure with more Scottish folklore. Sure it runs the risk of turning into Moana or Raya but honestly from the outset that’s probably what most people would have expected. Or rather there just needed to be a plot that plays to the culture’s strengths and can highlight the mystique. The other movies have their problems but at least aren’t as transparent about being rehashes of other Disney properties. Also I really hate how people say that having the initial female director being in charge the whole way through development would have saved the film when she was the one who implemented the most problems in the film to begin with.

I was expecting a story with more fantasy and less silly bear antics. I didn't feel nearly as ripped off by that one time I went to see Bridge to Terabithia though.

I remember a lot of people said the point of the film was the mother daughter relationship in the film. Did it succeed in that aspect?

Merida gets to have her cake and eat it. The mum gets nothing in return. They both get a bit closer I guess?

Seems to be a trend in Disney films of female leads getting everything they'd wanted, giving up nothing in return, whilst causing issues for everyone else (WiR2, Turning Red)

It felt completely unrealistic to me. Coming from someone who butts heads with a parent a lot, a parent is not going to have such a big change of heart so quickly despite a life and death circumstance.
