Which confuses me because Family Guy is always so insincere, ironic and sarcastic. All of these block investment into characters, yet they expect audiences to be sad when Brian dies (even though he was obviously going to be resurrected). Rick and Morty suffers from this too due to the nihilism themes, especially when they both killed their other universe version of themselves. I'm not saying this type of humour is bad, but it is bad when we are then suddenly asked to care about what's happening.
Actually it seemed more like Brian at the beginning was the straight man of the show (the joke being the dog is more mature than Peter). But yeah, then Seth made him to be the self aware insufferable liberal mouthpiece.
Seth only ever wrote a handful of older episodes. This was already at the point where he collects his producer checks and just says whatever is in the script.
