I’m glad they look alien. In fact, I’m glad that it appears that they can look however they want to look. He, Darkseid, Desaad, and Granny all look as if they might not all be the same species.
If I had to guess, I’d say that they actually *aren’t* all the same species or even native to Apokolips, as Snyder seemed to be headed somewhere with the nature of the gods, belief, and magic. In my imagining, the New Gods, at least the ones associated with Darkseid, are any gods who refused to live in symbiosis with the worlds that birthed them, instead consuming them before moving on to find new worlds and new worshipers.

I sorta of understand having an unique motivation, but is never goes nowhere nor is expanded upon. You've Steppenwolf talking about his mother or the motherboxes being a mother, but that never goes anywhere.

Because they need two things to terraform a place - a viable planet and an extremely potent source of energy. The colonies died because they were cut off from resupply and the places they colonized reverted back to unlivable even by Kryptonian standards. Secondly, Zod wanted to resurrect Krypton, not half-ass another colony. That means Krypton, not just as a planet, but as a civilization and culture. Part of that culture was putting their future generations back in the hands of the AI that determined their roles within society. They had come to view natural conception as heretical. In short, they’d fallen into the trap of worshiping their own science.

One of the Motherboxes was activated by Silas Stone, Cyborg's father, to save/create Cyborg. This Motherbox discovered the planet had a kryptonian and went dark again scared. Once Superman died that some box woke the rest giving the go ahead.
Personally, I also believe that the death of Superman served as some sort of release of magical energy, too, sort of like a sacrifice. There’s plenty of stuff in the imagery to suggest it.
Ever since the Snyderverse, I daydream about things I think would be cool revelations about the ancient history. Here’s one:

I imagine it was going to an amalgam of the two. If you notice, there are really strong hints that Atlanteans are a matrilineal society. Arthur is the rightful King because he’s the first-born of Atlanna, irrespective of who his father is. I suspect that was because the highborns all trace their lineage back to Kara.
That would have been interesting... oh well. Same with the kryptonian broken moon in MoS and how that tied to an earlier war with Apokolips.
Because he was fighting Zod truly 1v1, he wasn't going all out because at the time he was naive and thought he could change his mind, and because at that time the Kryptonians Zod included were the first threats on his level he ever had to fight.. Steppenwolf was getting tagteamed by the whole crew and by then Superman had some more experience under his belt.
It’s worth mentioning that the Justice League needed every member to defeat Steppenwolf even after Superman was revived he was killed again until Flash reversed time

For example, white text on a black bubble indicates a sort of “negative voice,” if you’ve ever heard a reverse gate on vocals, you’ll have some idea of what I mean.
