If they didn't kill Caesar then and there, he would be unbeatable later. He was about to leave on campaign again and they would literally NEVER have another chance to stop him, it would be completely over for the republic if he ended that day with his life.
Killing him was a gamble, and yes in the end they lost the gamble, but they made the right choice for the time. Really, the problem is that they waited too long. They should have killed his ass way sooner.

If Caesar actually cared about the common Roman then he wouldn't have done everything in his power his entire life to throw the country into yet another bloody and destructive civil war.

Because he was a narcissistic populist that was already extremely far in the process of converting the country from a democracy into a dictatorship. The senators had already done everything they possibly could to try to stop him, but he had too many loyal and skilled warriors at his command. Caesar actively seemed to enjoy taking a shit on the countries traditions and trolling the senate. He intentionally made unreasonable demands just to show they they were forced to say yes no matter how vile they were, always with the threat of his army attacking the capitol.
Ultimately everyone attacked him to symbolically show solidarity. If just one person killed him, he would be scape-goated, but since everyone killed him, they hoped to avoid getting repercussion from the loyalists. Also, they attacked him in the senate because that was the only place where he didn't have body-guards.

Why did the people turn on the senators if he was such a prick? They thought doing it as a group would absolve them but instead they all get fricked in the ass.

        >Why did the people turn on the senators
Caesar promised and gave citizens a bunch of gold as unofficial bribes to get them to favor him. Senators argued against it but Caesar was already that popular.

        >Why did the people turn on the senators if he was such a prick?
because they correctly knew that even if the complaints against caesar were true, killing him would only invite more power struggle not solve the problem. the roman public at that time had lived through sulla and his purges, I doubt they had any illusions about the state of the republic.

This, Caesar got all the welfare queens to love him with unsustainable gibs. He was also a war hero that conquered huge swathes of land. He was like a mythical demi-god figure to the normal people.

And then Octavian did the same thing with his inheritance in order to immediately get a foothold in politics.
All of the most successful emperors/figures in Rome were loved by the people for a reason and that reason was usually money and peace.

what kind of peace are we talking about here, because caesar and augustus both instigated civil wars.

the truly noteworthy person to come out of that era was augustus. If he had been anything less than a god tier ruler and hadn't reigned for 4 decades the roman state might have collapsed like so many other historical nations after the erosion of their institutions.

              >caesar and augustus both instigated civil wars
And they were the ones to end them.
Veterans/soldiers loved them because they upheld their end of the bargain. Plus with Augustus, Rome had seen decades of civil conflict before Pax Romana.

I'd give some credit to Tiberius, whatever he got up to at Capri, being in power for another 20 years meant that there was nobody in Rome who could really remember life and politics before the Principate. It helps that despite being the original Doomer, and making pretty much the entire nobility hate him, he didn't loose any big wars, didn't waste money, and generally kept things stable.
