Because it was season eleven and the show had been going downhill for three seasons.

It's one of the future episodes, so I can understand a fan being familiar with which seasons the first few of those were in since they naturally stand out against all the other regular episodes.

I like the simpsons, I just don't see how anyone can pinpoint an episode on the spot like that. There are more Simpsons episodes than there are days in a calendar year.

No it seems like the most obvious joke you could make with them, the hyper religious guy who sheltered his kids in order to keep them from bad influence had both his kids end up as literal queers. It's ironic comedy at Flanders' expense.

Because "haha, Christian man's sons are gay, isn't that funny?" low hanging fruit humor.
Now, is it implying incest? That's the other question.

Some buttholes chads, or some drug addicts weirdos would be just fine. The joke is that they became someting their religion is opposed to. So they could make other things and the result would have been the same. Homosexuality is of course, the most obvious choice.

          True.
But the joke could work as contrast as well. That is how the Chad Flanders Joke worked.

Not really. They were just normal young kids. Happy, enthusiastic, excited to be alive. Kids don't typically act like Bart at that age. Bart's behavior is abnormal and a sign of abuse. Which, I mean, yeah, he is. But also it's a cartoon and Bart is being written by adults from an adult perspective for comedic effect and not exactly a representation of reality.

most young boys are in fact spastic buttholes. they're just pacified with video games and internet addiction nowadays.

He's not a "spastic butthole" but rather a jaded ten year old who has given up on school entirely and that's not normal at all. It'd be the sign of abuse or a learning disability or other mental problems.
Most little kids at that age act a lot like the Flanders minus the Jesus stuff. Enthusiastic for the world.
Again, Bart's written by adults as a joke and it's not realistic but if we're bringing realism into it Bart is a really, really, really sad child. I'm not even saying he's unrealistic. I'm saying if it were real life it'd be depressing to know Bart.

kids are jerks around here. don't know where you live where every kid isn't an butthole.

Being a jerk is different from "I've given up on life entirely and will never try" which is frankly depression. Bart is a depressed 10 year old. Merry Christmas.

yeah that's what happens to most boys in the modern education system. its catered towards how girls learn, not boys.

It really doesn't though at the elementary level. Normally young men exhibit Bart's behaviors during puberty as a part of growing up. For it to happen to such a young child is abnormal behavior. If Bart were in middle school it'd be a bit more excusable.

It was the 90's when being gay was still funny as frick and we didn't have to pretend otherwise.

It still is considered funny, just not in a "those other strange people are quirky" way, and instead in a "aren't we fellow LGBTeers so quirky?" because that's more empowering/inclusive. Gay humor is now based on relatability instead of oddity.
