you know, there is no problem in being inclusive, the problem comes when they change stuff that has been there already, sometimes for decades (comics are a very good example), if you want to be more inclusive you can, all you want, but create your own world, stories and characters and in general, you know, leave other stuff the frick alone

Jordan Peele does it and he's one of the few auteurs who has a mainstream audience.

          Anonymous

Original black screenplays are fairly hard sell though. Peele for the time being is only able to write and produce his films because they’ve done well at the box office so far, which has given him the freedom to keep doing what he wants. Once he gets couple of underperformers under his belt, that freedom is going to disappear unless he self finances (dumb) or he finds alternative independent funding.

I was largely talking in adaptation context, it’s way harder to get optioned if you’re considered “ethnic” or “urban” which means non-white, because studios traditionally just do token black movies, etc. because they think there isn’t money in them.

      thats not the problem.
you tell people to create their own thing, in a time where 80% of media is just reconstructed, readapted or reboot or just reusing general trends and themes. people support familiar and you better be a massive name with already successful products if you want to even have a chance of your completely original idea getting big.
so make something completely original, no one is going to follow it unless you force a gimmick out of supporting it which most turn to "black created, african american made, etc" which doesnt present the product as quality on merit alone, just from who is making it.

      So was it any good?

ill watch 20 more netflix sandman shows than a single new marvel tv show.
how was that for explaining if its good?
it got a little rough at the end but i thought the show was really decent.
pacing is an issue though especially at the end.

Gaiman doesn’t “approve”. Netflix already made the decision that they were going to blackwash Death before casting even started. Her being the “best” is irrelevant because someone with similar acting ability and who at least looked the part would’ve gone down better for everyone.

The problem was Gaiman had to engage people on twitter rather than just doing a GRRM and keeping his mouth shut when one of his characters was blackwashed.

what are the odds of so many of the 'best actors' in a european country being black? what percentage of britain's population is black?

and if skin colour simply doesn't matter, why did rose's mother and brother and great grandmother and great great grandmother and great great grandfather all have to be black? or was it suddenly very important to maintain the credibility of a black girl's entire family also being black?

this is all to say nothing of the fact that they were all terrible at acting, including the white actors. if these were the best actors they could find, they needed to look harder. or hire actors based on something other than how well they suck the producers' penises.

UK is only like 3% black even today.
The way the show portrays Britain, you'd think it was almost half black in the early 1900s.

Hell, the indian/paki population is twice that of the black population in the country, yet the only jeet I remember seeing is the guy who plays Cain.

American Gods was 'nothing happens: the show', 3 seasons of build up to nothing before getting canned

So what made her the best actor for the job? Her performance isn't that great.

I speak as someone who thinks Hannah John-Kamen would have made a perfect death

Because she is, bigot. Stop questioning minorities playing the roles of historically white characters. Next you're gonna complain about that tan skin girl playing Snow White. JUST BECAUSE HER NAME IS SNOW WHITE DOESN'T MEAN IT'S HER SKIN COLOUR!! Ugh there's no clap emojis here.

Because if you don't see the comic version of the character next to her, it's just some chick with an ankh necklace. Where's her eye makeup? Why didn't they give her frizzy more natural hair instead of curls? Black women have hair than can look like that. At least with Domino they still gave her her signature looks, and even with the hair being different, you can still look at her and think "oh, that looks like Domino" But Death is just some girl, nothing links her to the Sandman whatsoever.

      Anonymous

That's what mostly bothers me about the show, the characters should be unnatural and weird looking to emphasize their otherworldliness and they do fricking nothing to show that. I could forgive Dream acting like a block of wood if he looked like a creepy ghost man instead of a generic male model.

      Anonymous

      >Domino they still gave her her signature looks
Except for how she dressed. And her hair. And how she acted. She's basically a chick with a spot on her eye.

There is something demented in this. Casting producers don't think they can sell black actors in black roles, so they give black actors hand me down white roles. Who the frick looks at a CHALK WHITE character and thinks, "Gee. This chalk white character would be great for a black actor to play!" Are they purposefully being contrarian buttholes? Why don't they support black characters from black writers? Do they not think black characters are going to sell like white ones will, so they just use white characters for token black roles for diversity points? That's fricked up.

death was not created by gaiman though

      Anonymous

Was Spider-man only created by Steve Ditko?
Hell, gaiman was probably more involved in creating Death than Stan Lee was Spider-man.
Still. Dringenberg was the artist and co-creator. Comics are a VISUAL medium like film. Ignoring visual elements in adapting to another visual medium is idiotic.
Not only do I think Death isn't pale enough, Sandman isn't. They should have done the whole thing as a fricking animated series anyway.
I actually have some framed Dringenberg art in my room above my bed. Plus the wallscroll of the Endless that was the poster in Darlene's room on Roseanne. Her look was a gothic icon for years. Of course similarity to Siouxie Sioux didn't hurt.

So just like in the comics?

Ah. I forgot the first appearance didn't have it. Still. The later issues all feature it and it is the iconic look of the character. That would be like arguing that Batman should only have purple gloves.

    >Not deathly pale
    >Hair looks meticulously styled and not wild
    >No black lipstick
    >She might get the eye later on but I'm willing to bet fricking money it will only be in her final scene of the show.
To be frank though, the Lucifer casting is even worse than this. We'll have to see how this show goes over, I wonder how Neil would react or take it if people wind up despising it, or Death becomes a notable weak link of the cast.

Death's episode was the best, not only because its an adaptation of The Sound of her Wings with some welcome embellishments and that the actress did a good job, BUT also because (and mainly because)

OP, you are confusing racist chud with overly picky, autist fan. Yes, there is some overlap, but it's not all racists. Just sayin'.

Also to the (hopefully small) number of chuds here (because I'm not an Atlantic reading kneejerk woketard) if you call this fine woman a Black person then it shows that you're the real Black person. After all, is it not the case that racism is a crime, and crime is indeed, for Black folk?

Stop being racist, you Black folk.

It's just moden tokenism. Instead of actually write good black characters they always pick some random character and make them black as some sort of statement when anyone with half a brain would know how incredible condescending this sort of behavior is. Like every black person in existence needs hand me overs to feel validated.

I mean, I get why women feel like that, females have a higher tendency to feel inferior and need constant social validation, but this for a entire race is just kinda fricked up, I have no idea what the frick is wrong with whites in america that they need to pull this sort of thing out their asses every 5 years or so with some new bullshit. If is not atheism it's abortion, if is not abortion is feminism, if is not feminism is racism. I mean, jesus christ, is like a really long and boring southpark episode.

Frankly this show's existence poisons the comic for me. I read it when I was a kid and loved it, but seeing that this adaptation exists, I think I must have been mistaken and the comic is one of the worst comics ever made.
