I know I'm way late to the party, but I only just saw this movie recently. It's shocking how unengaging it is.

The motives for just about every character are nebulous. All the songs are forgettable. It's not funny or exciting. There is no character that is visually appealing or emotionally relatable.

I genuinely don't know what the message is: "Wishes are good"? "Keep on wishin'"?

Magnifico is compelling until he suddenly for no reason at all goes completely super villain.

He was clearly under the influence of addictive dark magic the entire time and everyone did all they could to exacerbate his condition instead of try and help him fix it.

From I understand this movie was a complete cluster frick product wise. Originally they were throwing around a lot of ideas interesting ideas that got scrapped such as making the movie a blend of traditional and CG or making Magnific part of an evil power couple which would explain a lot about the final film. Overall it feels like this movie exists just so Disney can say they made a movie for their 100th anniversary

Wish was definitely made just so Disney could celebrate their 100 years. That studio is COOKED

If Magnifico ended up turned into the Magic Mirror, it would've made sense for Amaya to then be the Evil Queen.

Because he’s not a villain and didn’t want to enslave them, he was pretty much just acting a a filter for peoples wishes, making sure they weren’t moronicly vague or harmful. He is entire thing is making sure that wishes are granted carefully.

They said the same thing with hand drawn animation and the movie the princess and the frog. Except that movie was actually really good, especially compared to this 100 anniversary movie, was terrible.

That's not what Asha said. She believed that if her grandpa's wish was guaranteed to never be granted by Magnifico, then said grandpa is at least owed the choice to pursue his wish on his own. It wouldn't be fair for him to continue living as a husk of his former self because he was led to believe someone else could eventually make his dreams a reality.

        >no, you must give back my dream even at the risk of others.
        Gonna pass on that sweaty.
Narcism aside, I don't really remember the consequences if any had he just let the dream go.

          >Narcism aside, I don't really remember the consequences if any had he just let the dream go.
Magnifico had two character flaws. One was his narcissism, the other was the looming paranoia of his kingdom falling to ruin like his hometown. In all fairness, there's very little that may have actually gone wrong if he'd returned some of the wishes he didn't intend to fulfill, but he opted to keep things safe by not turning them loose back to their original owners. Also, no one but Asha knew that he screened wishes, which was a mistake to reveal until she actually worked for him for a while.

And we saw that wishes can be granted on their own without Magnifico, which is why he suppressed the ones that were potentially dangerous. His methods can be argued but his motive was ultimately noble.

Giving back a wish is essentially telling the person their wish sucks and could drive somebody who already has evil motivations to pursue their wish out of spite. It's better just to safeguard all the wishes and treat everyone's as equal in validity when they aren't.

Imagine a movie where Magnifico is the main character and follows his story of poor kid who discovers the ability for granting wishes, then his rise to fame and stardom, eventually the creation of his own kingdom, but then his downfall through hubris as he begins to forget why he granted wishes selflessly in the first place, before eventually ending with Magnifico leaning his lesson and vowing to do good with his power and influence.

Why didn't Magnifico put on the anti-evil oil before using the evil book? He is a sorcerer; he should have more knowledge about magic. Why didn't Amaya bring up the anti-evil oil when she was talking to Magnifico? Both of them had a conversation near the evil book, and you're trying to tell me not once they brought the McGuffin oil.

The writers were so hellbent on having a "traditional Disney villain" in honor of their centennial that they pulled all kinds of loopholes to lead Magnifico to his corruption.

It's kinda shitty to hold onto wishes he has no plans to grant, but aren't bad for the wisher to personally work towards. However, there would probably also be issues if he returned the wishes to people and they misinterpreted it as rejection instead of encouragement. Unless he also clarified, "No it's not a bad wish. If it was I'd have kept it locked up," but revealing that would also have a side-effect that now people who don't get their wish returned panic over whether their wish in on a waiting list to be granted, or been deemed as total shit.
