I more meant the idiotic hypocrisy. People whine about comics not being discussed here but then want to jerk off to MUH SECRET CLUB bullshit. Cinemaphile is the same way, it's so stupid.

Tell me where I can read it without having to buy and store 50 out of print coffee table books.

There's lots of scans but no digitals. Unless you can read French.

Start going through library catalogues until you find one that has a collection.

      Cinemaphile doesn't talk about comics

Old newspaper comics just seem to be particularly niche, which is sad because they were in peak form during the '30s through the '50s. Giant expensive coffeetable collections and the lack of digital scans for many of them certainly do put a damper on things though.

I’ve wondered if there’s an online archive of the Chicago Tribune or something that would allow one to just read every strip chronologically.

I'm pretty sure there is, but there are a few problems. The biggest one is that a lot of digital newspaper archives are walled off by their providers, who expect you to pay a subscription fee to access the service of viewing their archive (even for things which are in the public domain, although that's beside the point for Gould, since none of his work has reached that point yet).

Libraries frequently offer limited access to some of these digital archives, usually based on the local papers of your area. The Library of Congress also offers a fair amount of free archives prior to the 1960s, and can point towards even more that are offered by individual states. But all that is taking shots in the dark if you're looking for a specific strip, especially since many papers add and drop strips over the years. For Dick Tracy, you're on point that an archive of the Chicago Tribune would be the place to find all of it.

So if you have a library card at the Chicago Public Library, there's a good shot of you getting free access to an archive of the Tribune. But if you already live in Chicagoland and have a library card, you could just check out their collection of the IDW reprints and get a better reading experience. Digitized microfilm has some issues, pic related.

Whenever I mention Dick Tracy to a friend, he brings up the theme from the unaired 1960s pilot. We had found a copy on VHS on a trip to the streets of New York in the early 00s.
