It's because sound mixing has become dogshit in modern films and TV, so you can't hear the dialogue over the background music and sfx half the time.

Absolutely this. Audio mixing has really gone to hell.

I kept them on for things like wellington paranormal just so I wouldn't miss something they said, but it's turning into a requirement lately.

It's because the audio mixing on most movies and shows today is awful, all the voicework is mumbling but the music will blow your eardrums out.

that has always been the case for american audio (since dvd anyway), the german audio track is mixing voices at a much higher level

Sound mixing is terrible. Dialogue is so low while explosions/normal sounds are 10000000 DB. As if we wanted to hear that more.

Modern TVs are also made with bad speakers.

And modern actors either mumble or whisper their dialogue.

You ever thought of adjusting sound settings or getting actual speakers? Your settings are fricked or you're playing surround without having surround nor bothering to downmix it to stereo

closed captions are for the deaf who can't hear anything
      subtitles just have the words
sometimes there is a choice between the two

It's nice when they include the song title or other details.
Also sometimes it will give away who's speaking when it's supposed to be a mystery to the audience and the characters. Ruined a few episodes of detective series for me by saying in the captions who was speaking on the phone but the voice is disguised. Must be somebody in charge of that, I'd be pissed off if I were the director.

I'm a zoomie and I put subtitles on nearly every movie or tv show I watch. Characters mumble or the sound is mixed poorly and you miss important dialogue otherwise. I don't wanna be like a moron (or a woman) that's just watching something with no idea what's going on.

A bit of what the other anons said about sound mixing but particularly it's because TV screens are so fricking flat they put the smallest speakers they can find so half of the time your tv screen is above the mid range of the volume specter (+50) yet you can't understand a thing because A)Mixing is crap and B)small Speakers favor treble sounds

It is because the audio engineers dialed the music up high and any human speech so fricking low that it sounds like mumbling. Then they compress it all together.
