It feels extremely dated for a show written so recently. Also, the audio mixing is incredibly bad.. just, close your eyes during any scene, it sounds like the actors are reading lines in a tin can

      >It feels extremely dated for a show written so recently
Yeah this. I think it's the reliance on #MeToo and other flash in the pan shit

        Anonymous

I remember the first season or two being really good but then they started making Bojack super creepy (like trying to frick his former crush's underage daughter) and turn it into a metoo thing instead of just self destruction.

Because it's shit and it unironically tried to say that BoJack is a predator for fricking an actress who was fricking 30+ years old just because she used to be a child actor in a show he made decades ago.

I guess for a typical Cinemaphile user the little #metoo stuff the show has comes off as obnoxious, to me it just comes off as...insignificant and small. Especially when the show also makes fun of modern feminists. I definitely reject the claim that it "relies" on #metoo. And the show never implies Bojack is creepy for fricking Sarah Lynn

        >the constant suble word play of Princess Carolyn
I remember reading that the first time they gave Amy Sedaris a line with some alliteration she had a really hard time getting it right and b***hed about it, so the writers made it a feature of her character just to frick with her.

        Based

          Anonymous

          Nah.
The show tries to be "reasonable" and "level-headed" but the truth is the moment any stuff the writers care about is brought up, the punchline is always the most fricking deadpan and serious preaching you could get. Be it abortion or gun rights, the character will just spell out word for word what writers probably thought was a clever and GOTCHA take on the subject.

            Anonymous

That's not even remotely true. There's only one character that cares about that stuff and every time she gets sucked into a cause it ends terribly for her. You just can't handle seeing a single character talk about guns or abortion in any left leaning way because you've got /misc/ brain rot and can't separate a character in a show from someone lecturing you.

              Anonymous

Yeah I second this. The way the abortion thing went down was hilarious

            >abortion
anon the biggest abortion joke they did revolved around an unhinged prostitute rapping about wanting to shoot fetuses, and it played out almost exactly like the typical friday night Cinemaphile thread about the subject.

admittedly the show did suffer from tds after the 2016 election but i’m pretty sure this happened before that.

Yes, and? The interview things in the show usually make fun of the hysteria media tries to impose

Completely agree. A show isn't good just because the characters are "deep"

I think deep characters do contribute to a show being good, although you don't need deep characters to have a great story, like in the case of SnK for example

It was discussed a lot here when it was on and reactions were fair and/or positive. During the fourth season there was a lot of Diane hate that started. By the final season Cinemaphile culture had settled on memeing "Normal Words but a Horse Guy" and dismissing Bojack as pozzed/cucked/soi/reddit/etc...

Now what I wonder is why no one talked about UNDONE here.

I liked the first season, but even so, I don't think there's that much to talk about. Alita and Odenkirk are fine, the plot is passable and the visuals are often trippy. But that's about it, really. (The second season was even worse.)

This show sucks. I watched 3 seasons and it's all just depressed self-pitying garbage. Looks bad, sounds bad, unrelatable, boring, and cringworthy. I watched some high-praise video essay review in an attempt to understand why people like it and they just sucked its dick for having characters with moral flaws.

1/10 would never recommend to literally anyone.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Bojack Horseman. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of depression, most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Bojack's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Secretariat's autobiography, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Bojack Horseman truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Bojack's existential catchphrase "What are you doing here?" which itself is a cryptic reference to some movie or something. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Raphael Bob-Waksberg's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

I like that Bojack never truly gets fixed or has a happy ending. Too many shows do that. I like that Bojack keeps thinking he has fixed himself several times only to realize he was really just spinning plates for a time. The Eulogy episode is an absolute masterclass though.

Because trying to use a cartoon to be disarming so you can slip in "like dude life is so like effing hard and depression is umm like bad" is not interesting. I feel like the things it gets praised for, primarily it's "realistic" depiction of depression and self-sabotage, is over blown. It feels like the kind of story a constantly on twitter, 20 something woman, who still gets much of her life paid for, would tell you if you asked about her struggles.

Pretty much what perpetuated the thought. You aren't going to have much say when you're both Bojack Horseman and you're getting accused of fricking an underaged girl, but Penny overblowing the situation and not at least coming out and being honest about the situation, only making things exponentially worse solely for the sake of drama just felt real forced.
