Why do movies look like shit these days?

I'm talking about cinematography. Everything looks too plastic and shallow, especially Netflix shows. They look like glorified YouTube videos. Very pristine yet completely soulless and cheap somehow. What's going on?

in general, what's the difference between digital and film in terms of aesthetics?

Watch Jurassic Park then watch Collateral. You'll notice the difference

it's one of the most beautiful films of all time, it's boring, i didn't care about the characters but it's visuals are amazing. It often opens up a shot that looks like a painting and slowly zooms into the character and just looks so gorgeous.

Netflix and Amazon and the like are young studios. Less experienced staff, less equipment, fewer props, fewer relationships in the industry, etc. All this adds up to a product that looks... off compared to studios that have been in the game for 100+ years.

I've noticed that many HDR optimized shows look like actual smeary shit, at least when watched in SDR

Well, duh. HDR content always looks like shit in SDR if you don't enable proper tonemapping.

I meant official SDR releases of HDR shows. I also do tonemapping with madVR which sometimes improves a bit on the official version but not always.

DoPs all started copying and learning from each other and now most of the artistic touch has been lost.

Definitately something like this. In the 90's good lighting was still an art, now you have great lighting in porn, youtube videos, etc., it's become a commodity and it was often the 'thing' that made a production look professional. Now that everyone is copying the same style, it is overused and looks bleh and generic. You need someone with a good eye and a good cinematographer to make striking images

There aren't enough competent people to make movies for 50 streaming channels, so you have to hire idiots.

Or do what Disney did and have all the movies made in a warehouse by indians 2 years before they film the live action scenes.

Even when modern directors shoot on film (like Christopher Nolan or JJ Abrams) it looks boring and soulless.
