animation is a tool to convey stories and emotions else you just end up with pulpy style over substance garbage if you put thought into the things that are supposed to be animated. akira kurosawa considered the script the most important aspect of a film.

Depends what you're looking for, I'd say most Ghibli is pure kino. Same goes for Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis and Akira. Cowboy Bebop in particular has some great character moments and sharp writing, same goes for Eva. From there, you have stuff like Angel's Egg, Jin-Roh and Perfect Blue that reinstate serious artistry. Artistically, stuff like Devil Man and Violence Jack are pure trash, but they ultimately use their pulp leanings to speak deeper about the hostility within human nature, albeit in a format that is completely ridiculous. Oh same goes for Space Dandy, dumb but amazing for what it is.
All anime is, are cartoons from Japan. There isn't anything "special" about it and it just hangs there within the field. That said, there are 3 things I hate 1) the fandom, I am a closeted weeb and refuse to talk about anime in public, my GF is Japanese and she doesn't even weeb out over anime 2) the episodic nature, overtly cute and or rapey tones. Seriously the 80s/90s were bizarre with all the rape. Love Wicked City's style but I can only watch a demon woman get dicked down for so long.
