why do people say avatar was a bad movie again?
it was an absolute spectacle
all the criticisms i see fall apart if i think about them for a second, or draw a parallel to what the critic is saying and their own particular tastes

Amusement park ride. Not cinema.

Avatar spectacle homosexualry ruined movies
B+A+S+E+D
It's boring and the novelty of it wore off a decade ago
>all the same flaws and more
sorry friend but my faves are perfect
Avatar isn't "bad" but it's example of the worst kind of safe assembly-line filmmaking that became the norm for the next decade
I have literally zero(0) desire to watch any of these movies
i curse you with testicular tortion until you watch at least three of them
Shortcuts and Apocalypse Now are definitely worth it in my opinion. If you're in the right mood, they'll captivate you. I thought Lady Killers was awful though.
Hot Fuzz and JFK were good. Then read Dr Mary's Monkey and the world makes sense.
Not him but of those I wanna watch Streets of Fire and Ravenous. I have no idea what to pick for the third one, none of them sound interesting, especially the bottomrow.
Tintin? Really?
Tintin is on my list because to me it's exactly what animation should be
It's a film made entirely of looney tunes visual gags and has a genuine sense of adventure
It clicks with me just like Ladykillers' christian "niceness" and individual ironies combined with the Coens' style
>christian "niceness"
It's just not a very good film in my opinion. It feels like it was made by entirely different directors than the Coens. I still have trouble believing they directed it.
You wouldn't understand my need for any sort of optimism or general morality in films
20 years of absolute nihilism it needs to end
Tintin is brilliant in my opinion. Beautiful animation as well. I'm really looking forward to the sequel.
Because its a moronic hippy xeno jerkfest at the cost of the human race. Literally propaganda.
Boring, derivative, no interesting characters, no interesting story, all CGI shit that didn't look good to anyone who isn't moronic and now with hindsight people can watch it and see that the CGI doesn't look great
No one likes the movie Avatar. They like the cultural phenomena, they remember when they were younger they went to the cinema with their friends and wow that movie made a billion dollars. You can't even name the characters.
in terms of visual spectacle pushing the boundaries of what was possible with digital filmmaking at the time, final fantasy the spirit within was better
it also had more interesting worldbuilding and action sequences and monsters
sorry your gay blue monkey movie sucks balls, at least you've still got the porn
>your favourite movie has all the same flaws and more
>implying
>my capeshit is old so its good!!!
plotgays and cinemasins-tier youtube critics are the only people who hate Avatar
Less to do with 3D. The story is just cliché. Its easy to shit on since it barely registers as an IP. It has the typical 80s story beats where most cinematic universes fail.
true
and yeah, i never mentioned 3d anywhere
no idea why people keep bringing it up unsolicited
most theaters it showed in probably didn't even have 3d projectors
100 percent
i felt compelled to make this thread after watching rlm's "review",,,, and then all their "critiques" of avatar, they praise other movies for shoving in the viewers face, just phrased differently
"the latest marvel capeshit was great! just turn your brain off!"
"avatar sucked! no subsistence!"
>the top IQ take is "y-you too"
Cinemaphile trying to write characters smarter than themselves
it's true
the same people who hate avatar are the same people who think star wars is high art
i'll admit though, i could've done this image better. i just made it on a whim because red letter media (a bunch of hacks this board seems to love) tried, and failed like so many to shit on avatar
a film doesn't have to be interesting to be good, lmao
avatars story isn't interesting, i'll be the first to admit that. what makes it good is the fact it keeps you constantly entertained, through other means
it's true
there's no explaining anything. no bullshit monologues. the movie speaks for itself
I don't hate Avatar but Lucas' Star Wars is absolutely way better
that really comes down to personal taste
but i respect you for admitting you don't hate avatar, that's what irks me. people who lie to themselves that they hated it just to feel smart
>a film doesn't have to be interesting to be good, lmao
I didn't say it had to be interesting
I said it was blandly and safely regurgitating something that had already been done before
It's like getting excited for the latest iteration of a lays potato chip that has a different colored package but is still the normal flavor
>regurgitating
Name exactly one film that's 100% 'original'
it's an asspull
i'm convinced to this day that people hate avatar because it's physically possible to not hate it
i'm the OP, and i used to trash on avatar for blue nerds and downs syndrome bulldozers, but upon rewatching i realized it's a masterpiece and i was just a halfwit (still am)
but i could this all day, lol. avatar hate is irrational
Luis Bunuel's The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeois
Avatar is as "good" as Avengers Infinity War
rescue dawn was a good movie
yeah
avatar is also a good movie
apples and oranges
none of what you said renders the movie bad in of itself, its not a remake of anything. if you reduce the plot down for every movie like people do for avatar, there would only be maybe 20 movies in existence
this is a stupid fricking debate, man
>avatars world building was next level, without ever having a single boring moment or bullshit exposition
>avatar was made over a decade ago
And it's legacy is nonexistent outside of its perfect combination of effects and the most commercial kind of story and characterization
To me it's in the same vein as the other Sam Worthington movies of the time that may have been technically interesting in CGI sense but outside of that not only is it bland filmmaking but deliberately palatable and unexpressive storytelling, taking stock archetypes and a story that had been done identically and even successfully in more than half a dozen other films
The only film that Cameron made that was in any way interesting was the first Terminator film
Is 100 IQ really the average? Mine is like 129 and I'm really not that smart a guy, I suck at anything math or optimization related. I dread to think what 100 IQ people are like.
globally it's actually way, way above average
what IQ test did you take? WAIS?
a free internet test
I made a number up.
we all do this to be fair
btw, i'm OP and my IQ is 93
The way to realize is to talk to people who are dumb as frick.
I never felt particularly smart either since I was mostly around people at school and uni who were on my "level". Then I started working criminal law and had to deal with junkies, drug dealers, violent offenders and the like and realized just how fricking idiotic people can be. I'm talking people filming themselves doing drug deals and thinking they can get away with it levels of stupid.
Whites have a much higher IQ on average than Black folk or spics, especially in shit countries. For all "smart" people on the globe, they're offset by being vastly outnumbered by genuine morons and uneducated thirdies. I'm surprised the average isn't somewhere in the 80s.
This is probably not IQ related, but I noticed that "normies" generally have a very hard time being creative. When I ask for their input on anything, it's impossible to create a scenario in their heads that isn't predicated on shelved cultural axioms (durr green goes well with red, just be yourself etc).
Again, this may or may not be related to IQ directly and instead personality but still abstract thinking and spontaneous originality seem to be rare amongst bellcurve people.
It's more the inability to understand or contextualize information. A typical one I had as a criminal lawyer was the people had read up on laws, especially things like early release and parole, but couldn't understand they would never be eligible for it since they had violated parole multiple times, broken restraining orders, lied about thing in their paperwork and various other things.
They knew the law, but didn't understand it, which is really the biggest difference between someone average and someone with some intelligence.
I unironically love Avatar. The world and the music and look of everything. The Navi are a cool concept and I know it has similarities to Fern Gully, Dances, etc, and I loved both of those as well. I like all of the characters and I think it has one of the more memorable villains of the last decade. Quarritch was bad ass. Also, Neytiri in war paint is my favorite Neytiri, period.
this
i didn't see any of the aforementioned movies, though
Watch Fergully one day, it legit has scenes that are so close to Avatar, it had to be on purpose. I don't care though, like I said I loved it as well and Avatar more than makes up for any similarities in my opinion in its world and characters. One of the things I'm most excited for in the new film is all of the new flora ans fauna we're gonna see. Cameron loves showing off that kind of stuff and all of the shooting on the water is giving me Waterworld vibes. Another underrated kino by the way.
i will never watch avatar
The Navi clans unite sequence was fricking sloppy
David Lynch's Dune tier
It was a bit rushed, but by that point the film was already pushing a long runtime for people sitting in theaters. I'm betting it used to be a longer scene of events but was trimmed down. We're going to see a lot more of them in the new film I think.
yeah. i have a feeling the movie would've been received a lot better if people watched the extended release, but they really needed to make an extended extended release if i'm being honest
got a laugh out of me, thanks
In the sense that the entire film is assembled out of vignettes that Bunuel literally extracted from his dreams, yeah it's pretty original. You may not have seen it.
i'll admit
this is one thing that stuck out as contrived
it was done rather well, though. and was necessary to setup the end climax. legit sleight of hand filmmaking, but jim pulled it off
waterworld is good
yeah i definitely will. i hope the thanator is in the second one, tbh
>waterworld is good
Watch the Ulysses Cut and it's even better. I highly recommend the Arrow video special edition. It has every version and the new transfers look stellar.
Me on the left
John Carter 2012 had better character development.
I enjoyed John Carter as well. A lot of fun, and dear lord Lynn Collins should've had a bigger career.
Same, they played it too safe though. It was such a typically by the numbers family friendly product, no wonder no-one remembers it.
You're right, a lot of felt "by committee" but you could tell it was made by passionate people. It's just Disney focus grouped it to hell and back and then sent it out to die. I still love it though, as flawed as it is. Bums me out we never got more. A hundred times more enjoyable than Disney Wars.
Woola >>>>>>> Everything in Pandora
>James Cameron says Avatar haters "shut the frick up" when they rewatch the movie
>when they rewatch the movie
I think Jimbo is making a really dumb assumption there, that haters would bother rewatching Avatar.
If Jake was still speaking in English on Avatar 2, I would leave the theater.
Basadoh, i liked it
Not the best movie, it was still a fun watch.
Best character is colonel quadrich
