Pretty much these plus a healthy dose of autism, yeah. You'll get that one schizo on here sooner or later unironically defending stuff like OP's comic, but at the end of the day, it's just official content enabling fans to run wild with their fan content which they often made in their formative/teenage years, which they often projected onto their fan works about a blue cartoon hedgehog instead of making an original story. It was a fascinating phenomenon to watch happen in real time growing up in the 2000s.

I'm literally autistic and I hate what I'm looking at.
Any kids franchise has this happen to it as its target demographic ages out but fails to actually grow up, so they try to hold on to the media of their childhood but make them more "mature." What sets Sonic apart is simply longevity. If the franchise died in the 90s, the edginess would eventually peter out. But we still have Sonic games and Sonic comics and Sonic cartoons and Sonic movies to this very day, so the autism continues.
Fan content likes to explore stuff that the original series doesn't. It's why there's so much grimdark of horse cartoon, or angsty south park yaoi. It can be interesting to see what the characters would do in these situations or write about it.
