Sometimes I think Marvel/DC's cancellation line for new characters is too high

launching a new character in an ongoing is almost always a death sentence. have them be in a team book for a bit, or as a side character in another title for a while. try to build momentum behind the character before tossing them out into their own solo series.

I mean what do you expect? No one reads comics. The 12 dudes left still regularly buying this stuff aren't exactly chomping at the bit for new characters

They created too many new characters all at once each with their own book and didn't advertise them well enough individually.

The critics doomed it by panning it as being too much like Spider-man.

I don't think comoc sales really matter that much when the most sold comic would generate a fraction of profit but O do think the industry need critics for blurbs on their trades.

That’s one reason they need to bring back books like Showcase, where you can introduce a new character and create fans before giving them an ongoing.

          >An ongoing book won’t create fans but a title where you do one-shot random stories somehow will, even though the market absolutely loathes giving ANY new character a chance these days.

We dont really know how many read or buy these comics. So it can be that they dont make any money on Sideways comics.

I genuinely think they could strike gold, if they adapted it into a series and used that to advertise the book going forward.

at least it makes sense to target hispanics, it's a growing minority and they actually care about capeshit, at least the guys. It's not like trying to sell comics to a demographic that does not care about capeshit on average like black lesbians.

As a Hispanic that hated the blue beetle movie I can tell you I like the character but hate how much they overcompensated in the Mexican immigrant stuff.
I welcome movies taking place in Mexican houses with cracked walls, photos of the virgin Mary and couches covered in plastic. But you don't need to pan inside the house like that is some kind of inspired thing, just have it in the background without shoving it in my face as if the director is screaming at me to saying how Mexican his movie is.

I hate that they changed the Beetle being from some Aztec place instead of Ancient Egypt. Sure is an alien backpack but is suppose to be like a Egyptian beetle ornament, you know because beetles where an important piece of Egyptian iconography.

Yeah and it bites off a mayan or aztec theme that could be used for a character for Jaime to play off of, either as a villain or hero.

That movie is the equivalent of that guy who over explains a joke, the movie isn't content with just making a passing joke about a thing Hispanic viewers might get, it has to keep going until you have a mexican looking guy explaining the joke to you.

I never really got the impression that Kyle was Hispanic until they suddenly decided he was. And it's not like I expect all Hispanic characters to walk around calling everyone "ese" or whatever and honestly it's better that you couldn't even tell because it wasn't important to the character. But still. Anyways tamales

Because he wasn't intended to be, Winnick intended it late into his run through his absentee father. Since a brown skinned father can still have light-skinned kids he figured he could work it in as a retcon.

Since the 90s though it's a long and complicated history of his dad secretly being a mexican spy working for the CIA where he had a presumed identity as a culturally irish american.

Ultimately it doesn't matter because Kyle didn't even knew his dad and was from New York and not Boston so he didn't based his entire personality around his irish heritage in the first place.

I’m fine with Kyle being half-Mexican honestly. I know plenty of Mexican Americans who don’t act any differently than other Americans. If this was Marvel, Kyle would be speaking Spanglish every other panel. The bad news is that DC clearly wants their own Black Panther moment after Blue Beetle bombed, and clearly want John Stewart as it despite the OG affirmative action character.

Because the original Ditko run established Peter as a working class white guy (or with israeli subtext if you want to be more critical) struggling to make ends meet. Spider-Man is CRAZY popular with hispanic/latin communities because of THE GRIND being a core part of the type of teen hero story that Spider-Man established and was endlessly copied. Hispanics are also an untapped source of profit for companies and they're only now just trying to get the Mexibucks.

    >DC's Marvel expies after Metal ended
I miss this big homie like you wouldn't believe. Okay not really but I like him as a Hulk expy and thought his hour gimmick was cool. Seems like the character just vanished after his ongoing ended. Could've put him on Suicide Squad or something, it could've worked

He looks like a bald Doomsday/Pitt
Admittedly when I first saw Damage, I told myself that if some random writer within 10 years picked up the character and somehow made it high concept I shouldn't be surprised

      Anonymous

One of my problems with him was it never felt like he had a solid enough hook. Kept throwing him at random pre-existing heroes just to see what stuck. If they played into the military angle more, that could've been something. And given him a supporting cast of any kind.
Also his design is ugly. Idk what's supposed to be going on with his arms. I'd prefer if his whole body was covered in that black texture instead of just the arms. The face is all wrong too

If Damage came out today people would think the design was AI generated

        >Loose Cannon
Their only similarity is that they're Hulk ripoffs. Their backstories, designs and even gimmicks are entirely different, Damage doesn't get stronger the angrier he gets, etc. Loose Cannon does have the better design though
