Why does everyone in the movie Fargo seem so depressed or sedated? They're all walking around like they're zombies. Is Minnesota actually filled with people like that?

i think the hottest weather i've ever experienced was a week long summer in minneapolis. the last reading the car thermometer read before crapping out was like 120'F, and i remember the tar oozing out of the weatherized roads and sticking to my shoes downtown.
for some reason i went to a BBQ festival in that heat and ate spicy shit.

I thought that was Detroit and Chicago.

Are you from Fargo or somewhere else in Minnesota or just a weather aficionado?

        >just a weather aficionado?
I was when I was looking for a place to move and remember being shocked how horrible the temperature extremes were. I also considered joining the airforce and serving at Minot to trigger a nuclear holocaust. Apparently I was seriously personally responsible for getting the age limit raised. All the men I spoke to thought I was very endearing and amusing etc but the one woman I spoke to was the only person who indicated she thought she knew what I was doing and was not even remotely amused.

The weather is by far nicer in Alaska.

They are very low key no drama type of people. And the incredibly harsh winters feed into that. Not even the teenagers go in wild streaks. There's 100 things combined that make Minnesotans this way, but having nothing to do, and 8 month winters affects it

what do you think they do up there at macdonalds? They don't drink milkshakes I assure you.

Are there a lot of alcoholics there? I've read that harsh winters tend to make people drink more heavily. I believe Finland has the highest per capita heavy drinkers. Russia might be up there too, but they don't like releasing that many statistics on their people.

Does that mean there's less violent crime in Minnesota since the people are low drama? I've been wanting to movie to a state where I feel safer.

What do you think is causing the spike in crime? I've heard so many different reasons from all political persuasions. My guess is that it's complex and has a multitude of reasons. I'm just not sure what wienertail of reasons explains it.

You know, there is a particular man who was killed in Minneapolis recently, and certain persons found his killing outrageous. Right or wrong, this specific event is the most obvious catalyst for the spike in violent crime from then until now.

He was obviously referring to the historical white population, whites with 1+ generations here. Of course loud extroverts come here sometimes alongside the various nogs.

    >so depressed or sedated
I think it's either the writter(s) don't know how to make different personalities in their characters or they wanted to show the bleak outlook cops aquire as they uncover the depths of human evil and depravity. I actually really enjoyed Fargo, especially the 3rd season.

It's not just the cops. The husband isn't a cop. There he is talking about worms for fishing and stamps.

The only other film I can remember everyone walking around like they just received a lobotomy was Napoleon Dynamite. Even the "cool" kids seemed really slow. I think that movie took place in Idaho. When I first watched it I thought it was in Utah.

I feel like I'm going crazy reading this thread. I didn't think everyone was depressed or sedated at all. Marge and Norm had a nice marriage. Obviously it's a shitty weather and Marge is dealing with murders but almost was pretty cheery. It even annoys Buscemi multiple times

Buscemi seems like the only normal one in the story, except for the criminal conduct.

yeah, they exaggerated the accents and how dumb everyone was but I never got the impression that everyone was depressed.

This thread also made me realize how weird it would be to see the same characters and setting during the summer.

      Let's think through the characters:

Marge and her husband: I reject the idea that they're depressed, as the OP suggests. It's true that the Coens might have painted this pair of goys (among others) as hokey, but they are loving, lawful good decent folk. They are the winners of the movie. The movie has a very clear and satisfying moral resolution: people who do evil die and go to prison, and people who do good get to go to bed next to their spouses and look forward to the baby. Well, as long as you don't happen upon the wrong crime scene on a night drive.

Mr. Lundegaard, his family and his business: There is clear depression and ANGER throughout here, centering on Lundegaard's money trouble and his subaltern in-law relationship under the father-in-law, who explictly tells him at one point that if his family ever has any real financial trouble, "Jean'll be taken care of" (no matter what), meaning that Jerry will be shut out for the disposable man that he is. This understanding preceded the events of the film, and it explains Jerry's desperation. Jerry effectively destroys his entire family over the money troubles, and the father-in-law's greed prevents him from properly bargaining for his daughter's life, despite his earlier suggestion. The father-in-law is not really depressed though, just an angry, gruff old man, until all this happened.

The criminals (including Shep): They're all depressed, sad people. I don't think I need to spend more time on this.

There are various girls who "smile and nod", but this isn't a real indication of character. One other depressed character who comes to mind is the asian guy who tries to reconnect with Marge and who she later learns is sus for one reason or another (I forget why exactly).

You listed only two miserable characters actually from Minnesota, which are Jerry and Mike. The criminals are all from elsewhere and the rest of Jerry's family seem content enough with life. I guess you could include Shep but the only time we see him he's committing a crime or talking to a cop. Jerry's father in law just hates Jerry but seems fine otherwise.

all the cops and service characters are the exaggerated "hokey" personalities which I never found as depressing, but meant for humor

The Coens are from Minnesota so this is their way of making fun of their home state. I lived in Minnesota a few years and saw this movie as a kid. I was always confused why everyone sounded like a stereotypical Canadian in it

kind of the point and why Fargo was so popular because the characters were so muted compared to what you would normally see in a movie. was original for it's time
