In the comic, Vaught had successfully convinced most of the public that the superhero stuff was real and that Homelander & co. were actually fighting space aliens and demons and shit, so it made a little more sense for Homelander to be seen as a truly heroic savior figure by middle America.
i guess the comic were finished before capeshit became a glut of liberal powerfantasy media which sort of explains the strange liberal vs conservative media contradiction sticking out more in the show
