I'm basing this a lot on stereotypes, but didn't the French have a real smoking culture that they enjoyed before the regulations gutted it? I've tried researching this once or twice but all the top results pertain to the fricking government regulations and laws that have been passed. As for me, if I went to America I'd try Camel Filters/Turkish Royals (if I can find them) and some type of American Spirit. I'm not even a regular smoker but I don't have some neurosis over having some occassionally and I want to try the types we're deprived of in the UK (for whatever reason).

I just paid about 30 bucks for 1.5kg of fine, untreated tobacco leafes. Virginia, Burley, some oriental stuff, Kentucky dark and bright and Virginia latakia.
Mix that and put that in your whatever and smoke it, you will never want anything else except more raw tobacco to smoke and savour.
Clean tobacco and the true taste of it, that's what you want.

I switched to clean pipe tobacco for like a year and gotta say that I'd be hacking up so much gunk for a few hours after waking up - never really had too much problems with ciggies in that regard except for very frequent throat clearing and small coughs

Used a pipe like this the whole time for that year and gotta say it was also a pain in the ass to clean (had to spend 5-10 at least once a week to really get that thing clean) The only real upside to the pipe tobacco was that the taste was nowhere near as offensive as cigarettes and also my fingers didn't smell like doodoo. Another bonus to the pipe is I could smoke indoors / in my room and the smell wouldn't linger but cigarette will really stank up your living area

It's not really a lie depending on how you light your bowl..With a pipe you can kind of gauge it so you only light the tobacco while inhaling so a stream of smoke doesn't keep pouring from the pipe after you've taken your hit (though sometimes some of the tobacco will stay lit which in that case I'd put the pipe inside a container next to my desk)
With cigarettes indoors though you cant really do anything about the endless stream of burning paper and tobacco just bleeding into your area
I'm also not saying that the smoke smell is completely unnoticeable or anything, but it's nowhere near as bad as smoking cigarettes in your house
