I've interacted with these "cinephile" types but they never have anything interesting or illumanating to say about any of these directors. It's all just superficial praise and some meme buzzwords like Brechtian or Kafkaesque. Then I look at guys who enjoy kung fu flicks and seem them break down the action choreography and direction and you actually gain insight into the technical elements of filmmaking and why it works. /film/ is a great example of this midwittery. I have never seen a single insightful post on any film there. It's all just glorified namedropping.

Original Legend of the Galactic Heroes (1988) by far the best one. Ousama Ranking and Violet Evergarden come close. Hunter x Hunter (Madhouse) and Magi (Labyrinth and Kingdom of Magic) are pretty good too. I've also come to enjoy Haikyu!! a fair bit.

Kino ping pong obviously, the art style is unique and plays to its strength, it's not ugly just to just stand out. Good music(better than haikyuu imo), characters are fleshed out and don't feel like an afterthought, and heart pumping games, probably the best I've seen(major, haikyuu, kuro basket etc for reference)

LoGH is more like Alexander The Great in space than anything Gundam. It has a ton of very likable characters and gives a good showcase of both the flaws of a democratic and an authocratic system. It's not perfect because it doesn't really comprehend the reality of religion aside from how it can be used fraudulently but the characters, music (mostly classical) and overall atmosphere make up for it.
HxH isn't a typical shounen. It's very subversive but not in a destructive way. It has also has a highly praised later Arc which makes the whole show worth watching, despite the issues with its pacing. Music is really good too.
